Title: Inexpensive keyboard that uses cherry black switches?
Post by: Special K on Wed, 22 July 2009, 13:33:07
Is there such a thing as an inexpensive keyboard that uses cherry black switches? I'm trying to try out all the switches by first buying a used, inexpensive board of each switch type. I've found such a board for black alps, buckling springs, cherry brown, and cherry blue switches. I have not yet found such a board for cherry black switches.
Right now, the only boards I know of that use cherry black switches are the Deck Legend, the Steelseries 7g, and the Filco FKBN104ML/EB. All of these boards are $100+, which is a lot to spend on something I'm not even sure I will like.
Is there a cheap option for trying out the cherry black switches?

Look for a Cherry MX-11900 (or G80-11900, same thing). It's the trackpad cousin to the MX-11800; however, it uses black switches instead of browns. You might be able to find someone on the 'board that will sell one to you. Member Dougy bought a bunch of them and sold them to members, so there might still be someone here that has one they want to get rid of. Place an ad in the classified section.

BIG suckers.
Actually, no. It (and the 11800) will probably be one of the smallest keyboards (with a full layout) you will ever own. Other than my ML-4100, it's the smallest keyboard I ever had. It's slightly taller than, say, a G80-3000 (not by much, though), but it far less wide; pretty close to a Tenkeyless width.

I have a MX-11800 and I don't think it's that big. It appears to use the exact same shell as the MX-11900.

It's a brilliant layout if the F-keys and the page nav cluster weren't so jacked up. The G80-1800 would be my ideal layout. It's just like the 11800/11900 minus the trackball/trackpad and a normal F-key and page nav cluster.
