Title: Apple Extended Keyboard IIs to tweak
Post by: zacbir on Thu, 20 November 2014, 13:33:58
Howdy.

Just picked up a lot of 4 Apple Extended Keyboard IIs. I plan on USBifying at least one of them via Teensy 2.0 and tmx code. Today I stumbled upon this entry from adafruit: https://learn.adafruit.com/convert-your-model-m-keyboard-to-bluetooth-with-bluefruit-ez-key-hid/overview and became more than a bit interested in modding one of the remaining as a Bluetooth keyboard. There doesn't seem to be as much room inside the AEKII as in the Model M, but I'll keep looking and noodling.

Hi, welcome to geekhack!

You might want to post in the “making stuff together” subforum, as it gets a bit more traffic than the new members section.

AEK IIs are great keyboards, especially the ones from before 1994. I really like the keycaps.

I’ve had great success installing a Teensy in a couple of other ADB keyboards and using hasu’s tmk_keyboard firmware. Don’t hesitate to ask questions in the dedicated thread about ADB conversion (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=14290), and hasu and other folks will stop by to answer.

Welcome to Geekhack!

If your project does get off the ground, please post pictures and a build log if possible.  Every now and again someone does ask about a bluetooth keyboard, so there definitely seems to be some demand for them.

Funny you should mention that. Here's my post to the "ADB to USB keyboard converter thread": https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=14290.msg1563262#msg1563262

Seems to be a 100% success. I'm typing on it now.

Nicely done :)

Any plans to wrap the Teensy in something to protect it?

I have done several ADB to USB conversions using HASUs code. I also have several AEKIIs that I will be converting (3 of them) so if you are interested, I can take pictures of the conversion process for you.

(I probably won't get to them for about 2 weeks though)

Yeah, I'm going to try and model something in SketchUp Make and have friends print it. We'll see. I don't get my own 3D printer until Father's Day 2015.

I also wrote up the process and a subsequent project (Caps Lock -> Control) on my blog: http://zacbir.net/blog/2014/12/16/nimitz-alive/ (http://zacbir.net/blog/2014/12/16/nimitz-alive/) and http://zacbir.net/blog/2014/12/19/getting-control-over-caps-lock/ (http://zacbir.net/blog/2014/12/19/getting-control-over-caps-lock/).

With a 3D printer you could print your own keycaps ;)
