Title: Anyone on Android 5.0?
Post by: JackMills on Fri, 21 November 2014, 03:28:11
My Nexus 5 got the Android 5.0 update and I am regretting that I installed it.
It looks like it has been designed for children with a lot of simplified icons, over-usage of colours (lots of red, blue, pink).
There is no Gallery anymore and in the new Photo's I can't do folders.
It seems that for most Google apps the settings have lesser possibilities.

I am not a fan, but curious to your experience.

The gallery is a definite annoyance but apart from that I think it's an improvement overall. Much faster, better notification/quick settings and my battery life even seems to have improved on my Nexus 4. Very surprising that Google can make a 2 year old device seem like new with just a system update.

I can't say anything about battery life yet, it seems to be in the same ballpark as with Android 4.4 for me. If the estimate is correct then battery life will be better. So I am waiting for the battery.
I must agree on the responsiveness, it feels faster but the overall look and feel is just not my thing. Some things got smaller like the home, back buttons. If you want to set an alarm in the clock, it is more difficult because the dial got smaller. I used to find the way of setting the alarm fantastic, but now I make errors because the font got smaller (I tested by setting the overall font to large, which made the overall experience better, but not the clock)

Reading it back it seems like I am definitely an old man whining on how it used to be better, while the only thing I need to do is discover and adapt.

Can't remember to be honest, pretty sure it was just a factory 4.4.4 image off the Google page.

One of my co-workers got it a couple days ago, he has also mentioned the gallery missing.  His main gripe is the email app he is using doesn't work anymore - I don't recall its name though.  This after I told him to give it a couple weeks before installing it so others could deal with the bugs....

Well, to be fair, most reviews I've seen pointed out how it was weird that Photos and Gallery are on the phone. Is there any documentation that illustrates why the change happened, or whether they combined the two?

Yea this 5.0 really sucks... I can't seem to stop my phone from vibrating.
I'm really disliking that my chrome tabs are separate applications

i guess people don't know they can run any version of android?  it's not like apple where you're not allowed to downgrade?

it's not like apple where you're not allowed to downgrade?

The thing that I find amusing about this is that you can downgrade an Apple device, if you download the older OS file and use iTunes to restore to that OS file.

And I guess it's almost time for me to upgrade to a new phone, mine is maxed out at 4.1.2

I am running it on my old galaxy s3 (with a CM12 port). I don't mind the color scheme too much and feel after a while KitKat will look old just like gingerbread does now.

I'm not sure about the photos app, I'm still using the plain AOSP gallery app.

You can stop all the chrome tabs from being in the all switcher and have them all in one chrome instance. Its in the settings as "merge tabs and apps".

How is the battery life so far for the s3 on lollipop compared to kitkat? I'm thinking of running the latest cm on my note 3 but the different colour scheme is putting me off as I'm assuming the lack of pure blacks on the AMOLED screen would reduce the battery life.

I'm personally loving this update, almost every aspect of it actually.
I'm a little annoyed with gallery being gone but Photo's is quickly growing on me so it's really not a big deal for me.
I personally really like the fact that they made chrome each separate thing because whenever i was trying to switch between tabs i'd almost always press the...app drawer? button so it worked out perfectly for me.

That's the most annoying thing for me, hands down.

Overall I like it I think. Battery life is better on my Nexus 5, but I've never been a fan of the stock Android look so I have Nova Launcher Prime on it as always. Turned all the animations off, too. Don't need 'em.

Not I.
Title: Re: Anyone on Android 5.0?

Found out my issue, when you click on language and input it's supposed to bring you to google keyboard but i have mine disabled so once i re-enabled it, it worked.

Also does anyone know how to remove items from the quick menu on the drop down top bar? i was playing around with the phone and when i turned on the invert colors function it put itself onto my quick menu and now i don't know how to remove and it's ugly/annoying, also anyone know how to delete images without it deleting from your backup on photos?

I have the invert colors problem too, and have no idea how to get rid of it. Yet.

My wife did the upgrade on her Nexus 4, and it broke her phone. It's practically or actually unusable now, depending on its mood.

What kind of problems is she having? Does the phone boot up? A factory reset would probably help.

I haven't found a damn MTP driver for the Nexus 4 for Win 7 yet, to get the data off her phone before I do that. After I get her data off, I plan to install a stock KitKat ROM. For now, she's using my Nexus 4 (KitKat), and I'm just using my work iPhone 4S. I need to replace my OnePlus One that was stolen on Halloween.

Her phone would hardly even make a call last night or send a text. When I did manage to make a call, the icon to end the call wasn't even showing. :(

I got in on my nexus 5 and now on the 6. I like it, but getting used to some things. I agree removing gallery was dumb. I went back to using quickpic. I miss KK in some ways but custom Roms will fix the little things I miss.

You can give Wug's toolkit a try - www.wugfresh.com

Possible to make backup's from here and pretty much do anything. Very easy to use and works great. It'll also walk you through the driver process. Hope that helps.

Some more notes... I'm not sure if it's mainly the lack of proper compatibility but I find my apps crashing a lot while having a few tabs open, messenger and maybe my texts open... Not sure what's causing it but it's annoying since I won't get my emails, texts or facebook messages because the associated app crashed.

My reason for disliking the chrome tabs is because I'm the type of person that always has a specific set of tabs open in a specific order whether I'm on my phone or computer. With Lollipop I can't keep that order because it's in the order of the most recently used tabs. Not to mention I have the other apps mixed into that list that I don't feel the need to see every time I go to change tabs.

Silent mode now blocks alarm notifications. Maybe I just didn't set this properly but this could be annoying in the future since I use my phone as my alarm and if I forget to take it off silent after work then I can easily miss my alarm.

got it on my nexus 4.  a couple of notes:

1.  the lock screen is now horrible.  let me swipe in ANY direction to unlock.  the concept is good; the lack of 'turn off-ability' is horrible.

2.  lock screen notification double tap is nice.  i like it

3.  derr...wtf happened to my camera?  since when did the shutter mean 'violently shut down phone'

4.  so many buttons in the settings shade that don't look like buttons.  how do you quickly open the alarm app?  you clicked the dark barely visible text next to the date.

5.  battery life is AMAZING and performance is smooth.  at the end of the day with normal usage, instead of 30%, i had 50%.

Am I the only one not having any big issues and loving lollipop?

With my new 1+One I can get 7hr screen on time or with less screen usage easily get over 24hr. So no battery issues for me.

No app crashes or anything like that. I did install it from a fresh wipe so there was no kitkat data carried over if that matters. Sometimes a clean flash can fix lots of random issues.

And as I have mentioned before. For those complaining about the new chrome tabs, you can disable that "feature" (in chrome's settings).

Wow... surprised so many are having problems. I flashed the OTA on my Nexus 4, and it's been rock solid for me so far. No camera crashes, battery life seems at least equivalent if not better than Kitkat. I do use Quickpic instead of the built in gallery, so I didn't notice any changes there. I'm loving how fluid and fast everything is.

If I have one criticism, it would be the new lockscreen. I'd rather have it just show me the pin input instead of requiring me to swipe up, but that's rather minor.

I switched back to swipe but that's actually really sucky, i would HATE that if i was using pattern lock again.

Just depends on one's value of notifications being less of a hassle to see. One extra step if you want to actually get into your phone, but easy to check and put back otherwise.

Change isn't bad... if they offered a fallback mode.

you would think this is exceptionally obvious?  but most people want things EXACTLY their way and if other people can also get what they want, then something is wrong with the product.

so what do people think a month later?

i found out that commonly accessed settings will be dynamically added to the setting shade.  very nice.  I now have the display orientation button I've always wanted in a nice spot without needing a third party app or launcher
