Title: Advice on upgrading my gaming rig
Post by: chemicalenergetics on Mon, 24 November 2014, 13:21:48
Hi this is my current gaming rig:
Asus H97 Progamer MBoard
intel i5 4690 3.50GHz
Crucial 256GB SSD
WesternDigital 1TB HDD
G.Skill Ripjaws X 16GB RAM ( 2X 8GB)
Asus Strix GTX970 4GB
Superflower 600W PSU

My question is, is this rig sufficient to run all games smoothly on Ultra settings, as well as whether is there a need for me to upgrade to a i7 4700 3.60GHz and whether it will make a difference to the performance of my current rig.
Thanks in advance!

For 1080p, that will be more than enough.  No reason to upgrade the cpu.

Even at 1440p, that will play very high settings on most games (probably with the AA turned down a touch though).

The amount of money you would spend to upgrade from an i5 to an i7 would not be justified by the miniscule amount of game performance increase.

A 4690 is the best bang for your buck for gaming, and the components you listed are all just fine for the purposes of gaming.

The only upgrade I would consider is adding a GTX970 for SLI operation, but that would be for the really high-end games.

Honestly there is nothing in that build that I would upgrade at this point. I think you are aware that this build is easily sufficient for pretty much any game out there right now.

As you go for more expensive high-end components, you face diminishing returns. At some point, you start paying a lot for small increases in performance. That is why I personally never feel like going way over midrange-ish components and why I think that replacing or adding anything in your current build is not worth it.

Maybe it would be more interesting to invest in peripherals instead. No doubt you have a great keyboard (this is, afterall, Geekhack) but investing in great headphones, mic etc. can make the experience so much better. Beyond that there is the chair, desk etc. Personally I spend a lot on those kinds of things, and I feel it adds much more than an expensive almost meaningless increase in performance.
