Title: Thanksgiving Pies...or pies in general
Post by: nubbinator on Thu, 27 November 2014, 01:36:15
I ****ing love pies.  I don't know what it is, but give me cake and I'm sad, but give me pie and we're best friends.  So, with that said, what kinds of pies are people making/eating for Thanksgiving (American Thanksgiving for our Canadian members)?

This year I decided to go non-standard and try something totally different that I've never done before.  For one of my pies, I did a more standard berry pie.  I mixed golden raspberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries, squeezed in some sweet lemon juice, and added a little mint.  I probably should have bruised and torn the mint, but I lightly bruised and minced it.

The weird, non-standard pie was a kiwi based pie.  It's a kiwi sage pie with sliced and layered kiwi, minced sage, a little sweet lemon juice, and one thin layer of strawberry in it.  I was going to do straight kiwi, but thought a little strawberry would help.  And before you go thinking kiwi sage, you're a weird one nubs, I did make a kiwi sage reduction a couple of weeks back that was awesome, so I have hope for this pie.

Anyone else decide to do a little experimenting?

You can't, but it's so damn predictable...and store bought ones are usually pretty ****ty.

well...  I wouldn't say ****ty.. it's more  starchy, as if they tried to minimize cost by using less pumpkin..

But... i mean... the extreme sugar is what makes desserts pop anyway.. so if you're not super retentive about how the pr0z do it..   it works aight..

Kinda like the QFR of pies..

I would kill for some pumpkin pie right now. It's a very uncommon dish here in Australia but I used to get it at this cafe I'd visit with my grandparents, ****ing delicious.

Totally agree Pie>Cake every time... unless it's ice cream cake. Ice cream cake wins over everything.

A good keylime pie is hands down my favorite, but so many places don't know how to properly make them so you get that pudding pie bull****.

Amongst regular flavors, blueberry is by far my fav. Served hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream

My favourite is cherry pie. With some damn good coffee. And some music by Angelo Badalamenti in the background ...

Mint in food: No thanks. Mint is for toothpaste, and sometimes for chocolate. I can't stand mint elsewhere as it reminds me of brushing my teeth.

Sage and kiwi sounds weird... I've got to try it. :)

Otherwise in season, I often make blueberry pie, of course from wild blueberries that I have picked myself. Where I live there is also a abandoned apple orchard, where I can pick as much as I want, and this last season I made three different apple pies.

I like most pies. Today we're having pumpkin and apple (both made by my sister).

And I agree about regular cake, but seriously, cheesecake is better than pies IMO.

And my favourite pie is french silk pie.

A pie is only as good as the fruit you use to make it.

For sweet pie, my favorite is blueberry, but has to be in-season Maine blueberries (the small ones, not those lousy monster ones).
For tart pie, not much beats a good rhubarb.

Speaking of kiwi, try Rhubarb, Kiwi, Strawberry pie sometime...amazing!!
