Title: Sony Pictures - hacked(??) - Thoughts?
Post by: osi on Fri, 28 November 2014, 10:30:45: So a little incident happened earlier this week at Sony Pictures America that supposedly left all employees unable to use their workstations. To be as big of a hack as this claims to be, the information regarding this has been sparse--even on security based info websites.

Could it have been a publicity stunt? Maybe for a new upcoming movie release with clever marketing? Thanksgiving gravy and turkey are slowing down the information stream I guess. A computerworld article suggested the "attack" could be fake. In terms of the known information that has been release thus far, a fake hack doesn't seem out of the question.

Anyone else have recent information on this?? I find the situation rather interesting.

Sony SHOULD have all of their ducks in a row to follow a log audit and see what happened. Especially considering the notoriety of data breaches from adjacent sony brands in the previous years.

"The leak has been pulled from the site quickly, but Brian Krebs reports that some of the files have apparently also been traded on torrent networks, among these "a global Sony employee list, a Microsoft Excel file that includes the name, location, employee ID, network username, base salary and date of birth for more than 6,800 individuals."

FBI issues flash warning to selected enterprises :

The warning included the malware's technical details and instructions on how to protect company networks and computers from it, and listed its capabilities: overwriting of all the data on hard drives, including their MBR, and making it impossible for computers to boot up again.

Now I'm wondering if Sony Pictures will have fines assessed from so much loss of personally identifiable information. We'll see :D

You wouldn't be worried if your personal information had been leaked via your job? Or that the company you work for was potentially looking at loosing a lot of money?

Wasn't 3 movies enough? I will admit that the one loosely based on Kevin Mitnick was pretty good.

You wouldn't be worried if your personal information had been leaked via your job? Or that the company you work for was potentially looking at loosing a lot of money?

Yeah I would be but to be honest. Just think of this as a "disclosed breach". Imagine all of the times that information has leaked from an organization without them knowing or even worse, knowing and not disclosing.

Too bad for Sony. Now they've had several massive breaches and data leaks over the past few years. When will they learn and start actually adhereing to a security policy??

From what I've read so far, the demands by GOP have not been released, if the demands exist at all.
