Title: KUL ES87 with Clears - Surprise!
Post by: mdf on Mon, 01 December 2014, 18:19:19
Was just swapping in the Massdrop Granite keycaps on a KUL ES87 I'd gotten a few months ago with Clears, and got a bit of a surprise on the last keycap I removed: http://imgur.com/8BwjUiF (http://imgur.com/8BwjUiF)

A Cherry Black for the right arrow key?  WTF?

Anyone seen something like this happen before?

Very interesting!

I had a problem with a Kul keyboard as well -- a cosmetic issue with some splotches on the finish of the case. I also confirmed that I don't like Cherry stabilizers. Therefore, I am going back to WASD or Filco for a Cherry mx board.

lol wth I have never seen that before

If you need a clear switch and can solder I am happy to send one your way. (Assuming you don't want to deal with return/RMA/whatever and don't mind probably voiding your warranty)

That's pretty funny

it's an easy fix, though

I'm not a big fan on the stabalisers either, :/, but unfortunately, I've got no other working keyboards to revert back too, so that's always a disappointment.

Only if you're implying the Black switch stole the Clear one.  I prefer to think of it as a slightly more diverse board.  He just moved into the neighborhood and is trying to desegregate the area.

Another thing I find surprising is that you never noticed while using it.

My problem with the KUL-87 is that the switch on the L key sticks. An easy fix... but nonetheless... kind of bothersome. I think I like the CODE a bit better.

The surprise, my dear friend, is that you used the keyboard for a few months without noticing the difference.

It's somewhat feasible - similar actuation forces - but obviously the lack of a bump should be very noticeable.

This is from KUL website:

"Our mission is to challenge the norms of the computer peripheral market, which too often tends towards corner-cutting and exaggerated hype, by offering products with uncomparable design, unique functionality, and the highest reliability. We confidently seek to accomplish this by leveraging extensive manufacturing and engineering experience and by being honest with ourselves and our customers...the rest is what we'll just call science!" [emphasis added] ~ http://keyeduplabs.com/about.html

I guess that lone black mx switch is part of the "uncomparable design" and "unique functionality", lol.  Surely it has nothing to do with "corner-cutting", or piss-poor manufacturing.  Maybe it was a "science" experiment?

I like to kid people. I like clear switches also, except for the tight stems.

Um, I don't see what KUL says that Razer would not have said. And surely you do not treat Razer's claims seriously.

Heh. They wanted to sell one more board so much, that one broken Clear switch didn't stop them.

These switch substitutions could be mutations arising from cosmic rays.

I thought it was the Hulk?  Or did he use gasmic rays?

lol, don't use the arrow much and totally didn't notice it until the keycaps were off.

What do you think the way to go is?  Desolder it and put in a clear?

I'd gotten two of these from elitekeyboards and thankfully the one I use at home has all clears, this is the one I use at work.

Elite just got back to me, they offered to have it shipped back so the key could be replaced or to just send me a cherry clear.  I took them up on just sending me a new switch, so I can change it out if it bothers me.

If it hasn't bothered you before, it won't bother you now. Looks like you can just have a free switch to hold for the eventual day, 5 or 10 years later, when there is a switch failure.

What I am most interested in hearing, is how long a keyboard really lasts.

I'll start a thread on that right away!
