Title: Hello from London
Post by: kidanime3d on Wed, 03 December 2014, 19:34:03
Thought it was about time I got myself a mechanical keyboard, looking at getting a 60% or 65% keyboard with browns and pbt keycaps.

I like anime and some light gaming such as hearthstone.

Still need to add missing anime's.

Welcome to GH!

Mmm 60% :thumb:

Any particular reason you want browns?  Have you tried ergo clears yet?

Welcome and prepare your wallet for a major aneurysm.  IMO browns are excellent when broken in.  You'll find most people to be exceedingly helpful and search provides a wealth of knowledge.  Have you considered topre?

In the switch kit I tried(it had black, red, blue and brown) browns were my favourite.    This will be my first keyboard so browns are a nice and easy to find switch.

I have heard stories of this holy grail of typing but with a current typing speed of 28pwm, I don't believe the cost is worth it.

Browns were my first too! :thumb:

Oh man the thrill of the first purchase...have you shortlisted any keyboards?

Poker 2 and Leopold FC660M, I think the Poker 2 has thicker pbt keys and standardise keys where as the leopold is better built and the space bar is a pain in the ass to mod.

All this said, not sure if I should wait for the poker 3.  What do you think?  Also ISO or ANSI layout? Would I find doubleshot pbts for ISO?

Edit: Changed ASCII for ANSI

Welcome to GH!

i had no idea you could make a list like that! i'm wayyy to lazy and forgetful to even attempt to make a list now especially because i haven't been watching anime for like the past 4 years, i watched kill la kill and Inital D but that's about it. I used to watch Every anime series available to me for download whether i liked it or not back in my teens.

The Poker 3 is expected sometime February 2015 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=65569.msg1551681#msg1551681).  If you don't want to wait you could pick up a Poker 2 now to use and sell when you get a 3.

Do you mean ANSI?  I use ANSI only because of familiarity (my previous rubberdomes were ANSI) and the relative ease of acquiring keycaps.  As for doubleshot ISO, most GBs have an ISO kit -- either bundled or as an add-on.

I would go with ansi since it has the best compatibility.
As for choice of keyboard, the poker x isn't bad either. The PCB mount design would allow you to change out the springs and stems. So if you wanted ergo clears you could do it yourself without soldering.

GBs?  I haven't found any thick sub dye pbts or doubleshots with legend in ISO format.

If soldering is the disadvantage of plate mount, why is it considered better?

I am going to stick with browns.

Because it feels more solid and gives the board more weight so it doesn't move around

Do keyboards change much each revision?   I didn't notice any  negatives raised about the poker II.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Either Poker II (or 3) or FC660M would be fine, although as mentioned above it might be easier to find replacement keycaps for the Poker.

Also a bit easier to find ANSI than ISO sets, although with the number of European members joining, and participating in group buys, ISO options are always on the increase.
