Title: New to GH! Saying hello.
Post by: Mustang4290 on Tue, 09 December 2014, 14:20:22
Hello everyone!

I recently got into the mechanical keyboard community, a couple months ago. The first keyboard I ended up purchasing was a Ducky Shine 3 in MX Blues and I was hooked. I ended up modifying it and got the Taobao LED color changers and the ducky purple keycaps. I liked it a lot but ended up wanting a harder keypress so I sold it. The second keyboard that I purchased from amazon was a CM Quickfire Stealth with MX Greens. I really fell in love with these more than the blues because of the harder key presses. I figured that there's plenty of different switches to try so I kept an eye out for any other deals using massdrop mainly. My third keyboard was a Poker II with MX Clears from the Massdrop. I liked it at first but after a couple days I decided that the clears were not for me. It stayed on my table for about a month and a half before I just shipped it out yesterday for another keyboard enthusiast to enjoy! My last and most recent keyboard is also from massdrop and it is the Leopold FC 660M with Mint green keycaps in Cherry MX Red. My mind was blown with the reds and it still is. But it's all part of a journey, so who knows what my next switch will be :D

Just a bit about me, I live in Detroit, Michigan and enjoy playing MMO's and FPS games, hockey and a good beer.

Hope to see you all!

Here she is in all her glory! Although the enter key tends to get a little bit dirty.

Hey! Welcome to GH my friend. You'll see that this is a wonderful community that we have here. Cherish it as much (if you can) as your boards  ;)

You tried different switches. What did bring you from the clicky switches to the linear one? Especially from the heavy switch to soft one. Tired of smashing your keyboard?  :p

Umm, well I honestly just wanted to try them! I really loved the clicky switches but I remember when I was tooling around with my greens, I would get past the first bump and bottom the key out and liked how smooth it was. I figured that reds were the closest to that so that was my next purchase after clears!

Fair enough. What will be your next try? Topre? Buckling Spring? or even ALPS?

Welcome to Geekhack!

Those mint green keycaps look great :)

It is surprising that you liked MX reds after finding blues were too soft.  I like blacks and greens, and really find it difficult to use MX reds now.

Well I guess if you adapt yourself to heavier switches and you like them, it might be hard to go back. But sometimes going back bring some changes and your rediscover it which is nice also. I can't use such heavy switch, even with Blues my hands get tired sometimes. Maybe I don't have the proper typing form.

I have my KeyCool with MX reds on my gaming PC, which I use every now and again.  I'm finding more and more that my fingers are resting too heavily on the keys and accidentally pressing something.

Actually I'm typing this on my 45g Topre HHKB, but because of the slight tactile bump as you start to press the keys, I don't seem to accidentally actuate the keys as much.

I've tried MX Red but I can't compare with Topre switches as I've not tried them yet. However I see how the red may be too light for you to rest on them. If I'm not wrong you need to press the whole force at the beginning of the keypress on Topre switches hence that explain that you don't accidentally press them.

That's more or less correct about Topre, yes.

Actually buckling spring is about the only switch I haven't managed to accidentally press!
