Title: Dvoack key caps ?
Post by: acidtrip69 on Wed, 10 December 2014, 22:02:55
Hello i just changed my keyboard to USA Dvoack mode in widows so i changed my keycaps to be in that mode but the caps are ansi so the profile of the keybearde feels weird. I wanted to know were i could get ptb dye caps in dvoack. Hell i even take dauble shot abs or pbt. For mx switches.

I use Dvorak too! As far as keycaps go very few GBs include an option. My best recommendation is to learn to touch type but if you must have matching legends buy a DSA set so the profiles will match up. So any DSA set from SP will work, if you want dye sub then I'd look into granite.

How good is the quality on the caps ? I'm ask because i haven't had any good expererinces with keycaps from sp.

Personally I don't like their abs caps except for SA but I use a set of pbt DSA blanks and like them, if granite is similar I'd say they feel pretty good.

If i buy blanks.I would like to know how do people dye sub the keys. What would i need and steps to do to dye sub my own keys using blank pbt caps ?

I don't know if that's something you can do yourself but I've never tried cap dyeing of any kind.

It is possible to dye your own caps, people do it often with old caps from Model Ms, for instance. However, I believe it takes more specialized equipment to dye only a specific area of the cap, as you would need to do for a legend. Like was said, looking for a set of DSA caps in either doubleshot ABS or dyesub PBT would work. You could also get blank caps in any profile, but if you wanted to add legends to the blank caps, your only feasible option would be stickers or something similar.

There's currently a GB going on over at PMK (SP's storefront) for a set of ABS doubleshot caps in the DSA profile. Other options include looking in the classifieds section for sets which meet your criteria. You could also look at a custom set from WASD keyboards, but their caps are thin ABS just like SP's more common DCS profile.

You can mask keycaps with tape so that only certain areas get dyed, I think I saw someone at reddit do it a while ago.

I'd do some tests before doing this on a full batch of keycaps, though.

Many recent GB's have Dvorak kits. I have also lost interest in SP's DCS profile caps, but their SA caps are very very nice (thick, heavy doubleshots).

This GB will have a Dvorak kit when it launches: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=65935.0

Also, the Nuclear Data Green and any of the other SA sets using all row 3 alphas (Commando, Penumbra, etc) can be rearranged to Dvorak without issue.

DSA is okay, but I find them a bit harder to type on and they're a bit light for my taste, but they're easy to set up for different layouts at least. This set is DSA: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=65810.0
