Primarily, I'm a university student.

I also have a position with the housing department at my school -- I live in residence with first year students, and act as an academic resource to help them make the transition to university, provide general academic advice, and facilitate study sessions.

"System Engineer" is my official title, but I mostly develop web-based and standalone applications and internal company software tools.

Previously "Unemployed", "Senior Software Developer", "Senior Software Designer" and "Software Engineer". The field has been a bit rough recently with Microsoft screwing over Nokia and laying off literally thousands of competent developers and engineers in my immediate area. Just happy I'm employed right now.

Aiming for "Inventor and CEO" title eventually, with the emphasis in that order.

Here is the most interesting way to describe my job:  I take the incomprehensible babble of government bureaucrats, lawyers, engineers, and scientists, while accounting for the concerns of the regulated community, and turn their most heart-felt desires for effective environmental regulation into understandable, legally defensible regulatory language that will enforce existing environmental laws while sparing the fine businesses establishments of Indiana with over-burdensome requirements.

I also use the night hours to do unspeakable things in the fragrant, lonely alleys of my metropolitan area.  Really it's where my sign language club meets.

Without people like me, the world would spiral into environmental catastrophe, humans would start dying in droves, and civilization as we know it would collapse.  So pay your taxes and thank your bureaucrat.

There may be a good amount of engineers on GH but essentially my job description as a millwright is to make engineers look good.  In a nut shell I install, remove, replace, repair, modify, and maintain machinery in facilities ranging from grain handling / processing to nuclear power houses.  Here are some pics from my current job installing a 50 ton and a 25 ton bridge crane.

[attach=1]
One of the bridge beams for the 50.  This piece is 24,000 pounds and spans 65 feet.

[attach=2]
The crane used to set the parts/pieces.

[attach=3]
The 25 installed.

[attach=4]
The 50 ton installed.  The combined weight of the parts we set for the 50 was around 65,000 pounds plus the 266 feet of rail that weighed 85 pounds per foot.

Edit:  Lots of spelling fixes.  I need to quit posting longer posts from my phone.

Does wishing I'd continued in college or went back to college for EE degree count as being an engineer?
Never too late man! After 7 odd years of hating life working as a desktop tech I taught myself Java, after a year of that I moved on to Android development and now 9 months later I'm working at an awesome company with great people. Best decision I've ever made apart from quitting drinking.

Nice! Well done.

A friend of mine that I met in my engineering school was working on construction sites before studying back up. He didn't want to make a living like that. So before the engineering school he joined a bachelor. He had to work every night plus had 3 different jobs during holidays, sleeping only 4 hours,  so he could pay the University. He graduated from his Bachelor and then graduated from the engineering school. I admire these people that create opportunities for themselves no matter what.

Yeah I was working a 40 hour week while studying, it really wiped me out for the better part of a year. Worth it in the end though!

Primarily, I'm a university student.

I also have a position with the housing department at my school -- I live in residence with first year students, and act as an academic resource to help them make the transition to university, provide general academic advice, and facilitate study sessions.

Hey man, it sounds like we have the same job!  :) CA/RA life! Going to host an event now actually...

I'm similar to an RA, but not quite -- I work with the RA in my community. Main difference is I don't strictly speaking have to deal with any conduct issues.

I'm a system engineer too, but it has nothing to do with software or programming :P

I started out as a comic book artist/writer and illustrator.

I then was a songwriter for pop-stars for a bit.

I then worked in the video game industry as artist and art director.

I then worked in animation as a writer, director, and art director.

I then worked as a photographer for a bit.

I then worked as a composer for video games and film.

I then worked as an instructor for art/CG.

I'm now focused on writing novels in my free-time (while teaching art/CG). After having done all those different creative jobs, I find being a novelist the most agreeable with my lone-wolf personality. I can play well with others in a team and I'm a good leader and teacher, but my preference is to work alone and do my own thing.

Guess it depends on your style.  Losing your weekends because you drank too much is fun for awhile for those of us with the privilege to attend college, but it gets old after awhile when you can't concentrate for the whole day afterwards.

I rarely, if ever, drink heavy anymore, but I like to have a glass or two of wine a few times a week.  When I take a few days off, my body seems to respond well.  Makes me think I want to drop the wine habit so I can concentrate and produce more outside of my job.

Usually Dota 2, League of legends and any other competitive game cafes want us to organize. Really, it's just a hobby for now but me and the other guys doing this are pushing for bigger and better  :)

twitch.tv/megamingtv is where we cast from, although the tournament scene has been a bit dry lately.

That's awesome.

I image it's quite hard to push eSports in places where it's never been big. It's similar in the UK, where the scene exists, but the quality of players isn't there, and the interest from sponsors isn't there either.

Definitely one of the biggest issues is the high turn over of people here. Places like the USA, Europe, and regionally Jordan have a more solid foundation to build their scenes. Dubai, and the GCC in general, have populations that are constantly in flux because they compromise mostly of foreigners. Because of that we have a lot of 'uneducated'/young gamers who are superficially interested in competitive gaming, so you see a lot of exploitation from groups like Power League Gaming who take advantage of foreign companies unwillingness to personally invest in the region and hold sham events and tournaments just to say they have 'reach' in the region.

Since a lot of the people affected by their actions will leave the country, you don't have much accountability for your actions sadly.

There are other orgs here but they're generally insular/ afraid of new people so it's hard to connect with them or build better connections. For all intents and purposes, I act like I'm the first person to do this since everyone I've met doesn't want to grow the field if it means other people will enter it.

You'll find a lot of talk of "we're doing it for the community" and "we're only for the gamers" from orgs here and then find out they're taking out of prize pools and getting nice deals with sponsors. I'm upfront about our 'for profit' status which has bothered some people but I think it's healthier for everyone approaching it like that.

That's definitely cool!

Thanks, it's something that needs a lot of work and we're always pushing to improve the quality of our broadcasts. We don't have anything or anyone to really go off of here, so we're kind of working on building a good foundation for casting in the region outside of the few corporate 'shill' casters here. Slow and steady.

Yeah I bet this requires so much work. Considering you're doing it on your spare time that's real nice. A friend of mine created an org around a team he created also. IIRC it was for StarCraft 2. However it started to grow and he wasn't able to dedicate the needed time. I think he shut it down but he helped his players to find another good org before.

I'll definitely check out your stream.

I'm a graphic design student, and I work the counter at a tattoo studio as a side job. The other workers at the studio hate my keyboards. They allowed a Model M for two weeks once though.

I'm the sales manager (overpaid babysitter) for a company that buys and sells salvage vehicles.  We cover the entire lower 48.  Our company was recently bought out by a tech/marketing company and they shipped me down to south Florida from Brooklyn.

Honestly I'm more like a contact center manager with a better title, hopefully my title will change to manager of operations (and my pay will reflect) in the next few weeks.

Before this I installed commercial A/V equipment, was a cable installer, satellite installer and line cook at a few spots.  I've been doing this for like 6 years now.

My family has been trying to get me to come work outages for a while now but I make more sitting behind a computer all day so I'm good.

Did you not read Tim Ferriss' exciting, 4-hour work week?

LOL jk, I read it, mostly highly specific anecdotes that are not applicable to everyone..

Still a fun read..

Turns out the market for dropouts is slim.

If there are any power plants near you, you can normally start from the bottom and work your way up within a few years. The work is by no means glamorous, but it can pay well down the road.

Cool!  The petroleum world has never been my dream, but it's certainly an interesting one.  And uses a lot more traditional chemical engineering principles, which would be awesome.  I don't interact with many of the unit operations on a day to day basis, which is probably my only gripe with my job.  :|

Organic latex mattresses and custom live edge wood tables, desks, etc.

 :confused:  Are these real things?  Google seems to think they are.  But what makes them organic?  Other than the need for a buzzword.

Definitely not something that I had ever thought of doing, but Shell offered to pay for part of my school.

Organic is a buzzword that I hate hearing used the wrong way too. However, organic means "of or from a living thing". So, if it's natural latex that would count. Just like crude oil is orgainc.

Have some prior work in the same field, the stories are the best, once a guy told me: "My keyboard and mouse are not working". When i went over to his desk he had risen his desk(electrical riser) so much that the cables had been torn, the computer was actually bolted to the ground and in such an angle so the USB connection wouldnt release. Only time i couldnt hold in the laugh :D
