Is This Psychedelic iOS Keyboard The Craziest UI In Design History? http://flip.it/4seSl

Looks really cool. I wonder how practical is it. 130 wpm! My gosh!

130 doesn't seem realistic

That Fast Company guy on the link I provided claimed he could do 130 wpm. The developer claimed that its possible to do 180!

You gotta believe!

I see 100+ WPM in that video MAX, while usually when we measure WPM we measure the total over a period.

If you "type" the same sentence over and over again, eventually the predictor could be perfectly in tune for that sentence allowing you to reach a very high WPM ...

Would totally be willing to try this out on Android!
Swiftkey just has too many bugs with jumping cursor / "adding" the completed word in between the word itself...

Here is a link to a reddit thread about the Android: http://www.reddit.com/r/nintype/comments/2ocrl3/android_version/

There is an old version available as an APK, but the developer says he will work on it more in the new year.

TIL.

Super annoying when you're trying to erase the added word, and then it ends up messing up prediction even more.

It's highly customizable so you can turn off many things and have a minimal keyboard.

There are a few really good design decisions. Swiping the space bar left and right will move the cursor left and right one character. This is totally brilliant instead of depending on iOS magnify glass which we have to poke.

And if what you type has many other matches, you can hold the space bar and the words pop up in a window which you can choose. I turned off the top bar which provides suggestions as that take up space so the alternative is holding space to pop up words.

And those characters lighting up as you typed are really fun. It can be distracting but each tap or swipe that produce special effects can be turned off individually. I've never seen so much option and customization in a keyboard. Themes, colourd, disco lights. You can even split the keyboard or resize it. Truly amazing for one developer to do this. Work of love.

Oh and if you're totally paranoid about key logging, this keyboard does not require full access to work. If you are not familiar with what I mean, Apple actually put in some technical control to the OS when you are installing a third party keyboard where you need to specifiacally activate Full Access for keyboard to send things over network or for developer to gain more control. With Nintype, it works without needing the full aceess.

Loving this more and more especially that I could resort to pecking if I type slowly. The board knows that I want to revert back to the old way. So I cab ve swiping one sec ago and pecking the other sec. Cool.

130 wpm...dunno how necessary that is, but I don't know...just a supposition.

It has Colemak??

Does it allow you to "split" the keyboard, like iOS allows?

Yes it has Colemak, Dvorak and what not and yes you can split the keyboard as well.

good man.

Try the tutorial. If you get stuck, it's ok to ignore and revisit the tutorial later. The menu is activated by HOLDING on to Spacebar and then sliding your finger to TUTORIAL to turn it on/off.

If it is too colorful for you, again hold space bar, go to THEMEs  and the choose FX and turn off some stuff.

And I'd highly recommend OPTIONS - AUTOCORRECT and then disabling auto correct when peck-typing 2 character or more. This will make the keyboard more like an iOS keyboard for pecking and correcting your mistake.

As you use this keyboard more and more, you will get better at it and fall in love.

And for those on the fence because of the $5 price tag, think about how much you spent on mech keyboard, your iPhone and then those beautiful artisan caps. Think about the PP fees you paid and the shipping fees. $5 is NOTHING!!

Countless hours screwing around with mods (electrical, wiring, soldering, cutting, filing, planning)....

Yea, $5 is pretty much nothing...buts it's all I got left!

Still loving it. What I do not like is that I still can't type as fast as I peck on iOS keyboard. But of course, I could still peck at Nintype and therefore, what I dislike is moot in a way. I was hoping I can be a super fast swiper/combo.

They are surprisingly very little bugs. Sometimes, the keyboard crash and I am brought back to the default iOS but it's very, very rare.

I am still having fun playing with the keyboard. To many people, it's still a keyboard and why am I saying I am having fun? It's hard to express in words. It's like people looking at our mech keyboard and think that it is JUST a keyboard, but we know why we in Geekhack loves them, and find it hard to articulate. That is how I feel about Nintype. It's essentially just a iOS keyboard to many, but it's just so much fun!

You are a TRUE GEEKHACKER. Loving an iOS keyboard., who would think such a thing?
I'll jump on it because you are so ravenous about and it DOES have a solid set of reviews.
Maybe it'll drop a buck for New Years. Lol. Is there a Geekhack theme color available?

I'm trying to get CptBadAss to build a purple-pink-white keyboard for my gf for her birthday in Feb. if he doesn't maybe I'll get her Nintype instead.

I have purchased 3 different keyboards that I thought I would like. So far I still use the stock iOS keyboard. I fear that I will just be throwing away $5 and be right back to the stock iOS keyboard. But the colors make me fee like I should get it for that reason alone.

In my opinion, this keyboard will shine in an iPhone 6 and 6 Plus (likely even an iPad) but not the smaller models. The reason is that it is the first keyboard that combine both swiping and pecking and thus is BEST use with two thumbs. If you are buying this to try on an iPhone 5S which is too small for two thumb typing, you will not like in.

And this is the reason why I still haven't mastered it yet because I am so sure to one finger pecking and not two thumb swiping+pecking combo. But it is best use in this way.

YM88 - WELCOME! You might want to hold space bar and choose Theme to customize. As for deleting word, its just one back space, provided the word was type using swipe-peck combo. If you roped the word using peck, then you have to backspace each char to delete.

Edit: tip - swipe left on backspace key to delete and sweep to the right to undo the delete. Amazing innovation!

Also sweep left right on space bar to move the cursor.

haha yes that would be fun! I find this theme customizing very confusing at first glance. I don't know what most of these things even mean yet. I'll get there. I love how they put in the appostrophy in the little open space just right of the L key. Ninkey for the win!!

I got it on Christmas day when I was bored sitting at my grandparent's house.

I tried it for about an hour and didn't really like it. Really colorful, and I found the word guessing wasn't very accurate and changed what I wanted to type most of the time.

If I had spent longer working with it, I might have gotten the hang of it, but SwiftKey works just fine for me so I went back to it.

That looks insane!  What happened to the phones with the built-in keyboards?  I "upgraded" my phone and they no longer have tactile keyboard phones anymore.  Now what you do is carry around your new "phablet" and a separate bluetooth keyboard in your back pocket too?

The default FX is too much for me too and I turned it down a bit. As for the word guessing, it improves over time as it keeps track in its own dictionary. And remember this is just one developer vs SwiftKey so I am easily sway to support him. As long as it is stable and does not crash, I am going to use it.

This is unrelated to the quote but you seem to have a handle on this so ill ask you. I make spelling errors here and there and try to backspace but rather than deleting a character, it changes to another predicted (I'm guessing) word. Any way to turn that off that you know of? I'm going to keep it on as I'm guessing it might come in handy later on once I deal with this learning curve a bit more.

I try and try and try to use "swiftkey" and all those other Android apps that emulate keyboards....  I just get frustrated with it.  This looks pretty insane and I would like to see if I could use that app as well.  I guess it's like the Swiftkey Android app, I don't know.  I am having such a hard time using a "keyboard" app that I'd break down and get a dang keyboard for my phone!
Dang I miss my Epic 4g!

I actually came across a little glitch earlier when I tried to quote you on tapatalk. The keyboard never came up at all at first so I got out of the quote and tried again. This time it came up but it wasn't typing anything when I tapped on stuff. I got out again and it has been working fine ever since.

In iOS Settings, under Keyboard, you can actually arrange which is your first keyboard. I find that putting Nintype as the first, followed by English (which is the default iOS keyboard) and then Emoji somehow made it more stable, not prone to crash. Perhaps the iOS keyboard was trying to content with this. I believe there was a post that iOS 3rd party keyboard implementation is still at infancy.

But red underline spell check, good point. I didn't notice that. Not being a native English speaker, I gotta learn all of my spellings since childhood, so I didn't need to depend on a spell check as much :P I do need grammar check though, LOL!

Well, it was fun while it lasted but with no underlining of incorrect words im forced to return to the stock iOS keyboard. I'm sad. Also,  im on my 4th keyboard crash now as well.

EDIT: make that 5 crashes. RIP Nintype

Ouch, don't go! Did you turn on too many FXes? I definitely didn't get that many crashes. It's strange. But I do think that not having the red underline for misspelled words could be a no-go. I have tweet to the developer @jormy and asked if if there are any options to turn this on.

Ouch, don't go! Did you turn on too many FXes? I definitely didn't get that many crashes. It's strange. But I do think that not having the red underline for misspelled words could be a no-go. I have tweet to the developer @jormy and asked if if there are any options to turn this on.
Thanks! I might tweet him also with some of my concerns as well. Also, I will keep up to date on this thread to see how this app is progressing. I really do want to use it. Typing on this regular keyboard feels so boring now even after such short amount of time using Nintype.

He replied "@jormy: Doesn't look like it's possible with the API atm" - looks like it's SOL at the moment until Apple opened up more.

Ugh. Yea that's the answer I got too. He told me to use the topbar to correct mistakes. If I don't know it's incorrect how can I go back and correct it? haha. This is a major bummer. Back to the boring keyboard for me!

Just a thought, if the word is not in the dictionary, it wouldn't have predicted. You can tell from the way Nintype behave that the spelling is wrong. Wouldn't that work for you? That also mean that you have to turn off auto add to dictionary.

Ok..... I brightened the key caps slightly so I can make them out. I like it very much. Thanks for pushing me to do so. I blame you for my unproductive hours, Input. Not that I have anything to do at work now.

That's no fun. It has to look like a raccoon is throwing up on your iPhone keyboard as you type. Crazy colors and lines and this and that.

It's like the Shine 4 and the Corsair RGBs had a baby with an iPhone.

Looks like it would be fun to play with, but I use an Android phone and I'm a dedicated Swype user who resents those few times I have to peck in a fantasy name/word that isn't in my dictionary yet. Still, if an android version comes out, I'll probably get it anyway, just for fun.

I applaud it for going in that direction though, Swyping on a large screen in landscape mode can get tiring when I've used it on a tablet, I can see a split implementation with combination tap/swiping being probably the most comfortable choice for that. I'm a firm believer in swiping being superior to pecking for mobile input, though, as it solves a lot of the problems of large fingers on a small screen and the lack of feedback. It's always seemed silly to me to try to directly emulate an input method designed for use with a physical medium with tactile feedback on a featureless piece of glass.

V1.6 was just released in App Store and it vastly improved the keyboard pop up speed. No more 5 sec delay that many may think that the keyboard hang. And lots of performance enhancement and memory allocation to make it better. You should give it another try YM88, but still doesn't solve your twiggy line spelling error.
