Title: What do you guys do with your extra boards?
Post by: Jixr on Fri, 12 December 2014, 11:08:18
Hi everyone.

So I have a bit of an addictive personality when it comes to hobbies, ( which is why I held off on mech keyboards at first, as I knew how deep I would probably get into them )

So I just finished another build last night, and currently, I have 6 keyboards ( had probably 12 different ones in the last 2 years ) , all customized, and stuff, and I don't know what to do with them.

I have more than I need, and was wondering what you guys do with your keyboards? do you display them? toss them in a closet? or just sell off the ones you don't use anymore?

Closet/lying around randomly.  I don't have space right now.  Ideally though I would like to get a large desk or table, and have them all lie on that, so I can see them and have easy access.

I keep the one I use often around , the other ones sit in the closet in individual boxes with protection .
Right now I have the QFR and the faceU plugged in , the Gon and poker sitting on a table beside me . Cherry and IBM in the closet .
Maybe i forgot one board I'm unsure .

In a close future I'd like to display them .

Yeah, I only need 3 max, but would like to try and sell some to recoup some cash I've put into them, but at the same time I like having them, even though I never use them.

I just have my extras sitting on my shelf. I'm moving soon, and hope to display them a bit better when I move.

Sell them. Let's be honest you don't *need* 6 keyboards. Keep just 2 or 3. You'll get some extra cash and have less clutter

Mine sit in their boxes next to me.

I should honestly sell a few of them off, but I like them too much.

Yeah, I'm big into the minimalistic thing, So I'll probably sell of at least one of my 60%'ers ( I have 4 )

right now im selling off all my keyboards which are not custom built. Trying to get to where you are at.

I remember seeing a guy who had a keyboard stand in the media section. That looked aswesome, im going to make one myself when i get the time and when i get ahold of all my custom keyboard orders :)

In my case, I have my ipad poker that usually stays in my bag, my poker at work, my main 60% at home, and my 'pretty' 60% that looks nice, but I never use it, and then my QF-XT that I have all painted and decked out, and then in my closet a crappy old kaihl switched keyboard that has a broken stablizer that I've not gotten around to repairing.

As I go through my day whether at school or work, I constantly keep them concealed under my clothes. As I feel the keys pressed against my my bare flesh my body pulses with an indescribable joy. Not only am I always properly prepared to deal with the commonly pitiful excuses of input devices often implemented by modern technological equipment, but when harbored by a true master these keyboards can be used as a most lethal weapon to vanquish ones enemy.
As people pass me in the streets,
they never will know my power,
the ultimate strength hidden out of sight,
for I am keyboard man.

And that is what I do with my spare keyboards.

or something like that.

I desolder them and sell the parts. Then I dump the casings and PCBs. Just threw away 6 casings and 8 PCBs this month and will throw away a few more before the end of the year.

If I did that here, after a week there would be a noticable layer of dust.  After a month there would be nearly as much dust as keyboard.

I seem to live in a very dusty area :(

My dresser has a shelf behind a door in the middle part of it that I store them in. Not deep enough to fit a full size board but TKL and below fit just fine. 4 TKL boards and a JD40 will fit. Keeps the boards out of the sun and away from dust so it's perfect, just not enough space to fit everything.

I used to keep them. But only because I was still undecided about what I liked best.

Once I figured that out, I sold one in classifieds, gave one to my brother, and kept one just in case I would ever have need for an extra keyboard. Other than that I only kept Topre. One for home, and one for at work.

8 boards owned but only 3-4 are used regularly. I keep all boxes whenever I buy anything so I keep them in their boxes under my desk.

I've wanted to get a display case of some sort or maybe hang them on the wall to be cool but I haven't had the time to do it yet.

For a while I kept them in the packages they came in piled up by my computer, but the last few boards I've bought were packaged so badly I really don't want to put them back inside. The boards are currently taking up all my desk space.

I sold them if I can. Recently I sold the ThinkPad USB keyboard and with the extra cash, I bought a 60%. I guess it's ok to have one of each config - 40%, 60%, TKL, HHKB. I kept them in closet. Ha ha.

Oh.. That's right. I do have only one full size and I'm keeping that because it is a Matias Alps switch. I don't think I want a Cherry full size.

HHKB Pro JP is my daily.  HHKB Pro 2 is on a Mac Mini in the living room (hooked to both the TV and the stereo).  Industrial Model M is hooked to a secondary PC which I only use once in a while.  NIB MX-5000 is NIB in a closet.  Other industrial Model M is also in a closet.

I should sell all the rest: mostly regular Model Ms which are stockpiled in a garage but never take the time to do so  :(

I've also got keycaps / keypullers / cables / "blue cube" USB/PS/2 adapters etc. in a plastic box.

I usually try to get people I know to try one or another of them for a period of time to test my hypothesis that anyone who uses a mechanical keyboard for a week will never be able to go back. Nobody seems to even want to try. I'm offering to let you use a $100+ keyboard for free damn it, why won't you just say yes??

They're lying around (closet, shelves, floor). There are dozens of them. Only keep one on my desktop's tray and one in the backpack.

Although, I'd like to sell off everything but one or two home ergo boards (ErgoDox, and Axios or Maltron in the future), one or two portable ergo boards (TypeMatrix, and Planck or Atreus in the future) and something modded for gaming and #swag (QFR).

1. Current rotation: 3-4 keyboards on my desk.

2. New, but not in current rotation: in original boxes on shelves in a walk-in closet.

3. Old, awaiting restoration/USB conversion: in boxes on shelves in the study and a walk-in closet.

Recently, I sold all of my new Cherry mx keyboards and some old Alps keyboards. However, I then bought a new WASD V2 87 barebones keyboard in order to have one Cherry board and to have something for my Cherry keycap sets. I also bought another vintage Alps to harvest caps for my new KBP V60 Matias Quiet Click Mini keyboard.

Someday I would like to have a dust-proof illuminated cabinet with shelves to display keyboards, especially vintage IBMs that are now awaiting restoration and USB conversion.

I wish I could do what I did with my fountain pen collection. When that started getting out of hand I just bought one of these things:

http://www.pencase.co.uk/

and that solved the problem completely. They're pens. Store them right and the don't take up much room at all. Not so easy with keyboards, though come to think of it it's actually been cheaper to collect vintage keyboards than vintage pens. You can get a vintage keyboard for ~$30 + ~$40 shipping + 15% because OPEC. A vintage pen will almost invariably run you at least $100 + ~$30 shipping + 15% because OPEC.

Why can't I ever stay on topic.

Many more than collect keyboards. The difference between a good fountain pen and a ****ty ballpoint is rather analogous to the difference between a good mechanical keyboard and a ****ty rubber dome. And there are so many pens...

I have the pencil and love it, but there is/was a roller ball version of it thats no longer made. Basically built exactly like the pencil. ( I have a newer version of the pen, but its pretty plasticy and not as premium feeling as the 600 pencil )

Well there are more people using pen than people using keyboard I think. And older generation are more keen towards pen than keyboard. Not saying you're old though, don't misunderstand me :)

I'm trying to do the same but just not to end up with 15 boards when I would only use 2-3. I'm just looking for the keyboard that I like the most, I'm not that much of a collector.

That's incredible :O

Thankfully keyboards are relatively cheap and take almost no extra time at all compared to other "adult" hobbies. My keyboard journey is almost done. hopefully I can sell the boards I don't use.  Just yesterday I bought 2 sets on keycaps on massdrop because they were so cheap and I could use them.

Keyboards might be a bit cheaper than fountain pens but shipping is terrible. Dealing with collectable things online is about the only time I wish I were American. Can't you guys go into another recession so our dollar can get artificially strong again?

Thankfully keyboards are relatively cheap and take almost no extra time at all compared to other "adult" hobbies. My keyboard journey is almost done. hopefully I can sell the boards I don't use.  Just yesterday I bought 2 sets on keycaps on massdrop because they were so cheap and I could use them.

You really haven't been here that long then hah...

It gets more expensive when you have so many boards to buy things for simultaneously, as well as buying things for boards you don't even own...

A few months ago I thought I would never have extra boards. Curse this forum! @_@

There are at least 10 keyboards in this mess.
