If you haven't seen the movie, don't bother, it's not that good..
But if you have.. Below is my literal interpretation of what ACTUALLY happened
If we take away the mysticism..
The bamboo cutter was cuckolded..
His wife lied to him.. He's a bamboo cutter, and therefore simple, or magnanimous.
Either way.. the couple raises the child as their own..
Eventually The bamboo cutter finds wealth in his groves, a mine deposit (minerals, gold, w/e)
He gets rich..
Now, being rich was not enough for him.. like most rich men, they desire nobility.
You can't buy into nobility, you need to marry into it.. SO the bamboo cutter sought to marry off his daughter to achieve that goal.
Obviously, arranged marriages usually begin with some tremulous emotional back and forth..
Many suitors arrive, Kaguya likes one of them, but the bamboo cutter refuses, as he thinks he can marry her off to someone better.. SO.. the bamboo cutter has that man killed..
Kaguya gets very sad, when she's told a made up story about the suitor dieing in some other made-up-way
The richest suitor is the one the bamboo cutter has selected, but Kaguya detests this guy..
So.. something something happens, either she drinks something and goes stupid, or dies.. Either way.. the after story is that she went to the moon..
If she did go stupid, then they must've hid her away, if she died, then she's just gone.. either way.. that's consistent with typical motive of generating fantastical departures...
