Title: Hi GHers!!! FR/JP
Post by: Bison on Sun, 21 December 2014, 01:14:00
Hello GHers!!!

Awesome info on this forum. Thanks a lot.

I am currently contemplating one of these:
_ Topre 91 Silent variable
_ Topre Uniform 45g
_ Filco convertible 2 with the doubleshot round key set.

Most likely the Topre 91 silent, and uniform if I can find one.

Welcome to GH! A lot of people here really love Topre. I've tried a few and they feel great. However, if you are planning on participating in any group buys or want to do really any customization at all as far as swapping out Keysets and all that fun stuff that goes on here, your options are extremely limited with a Topre board and MX would be the rout to take. Just my 2 cents.

EDIT: This is assuming you don't own any mech boards yet.

This will be my first mech board.
I forgot to mention I don't type so much except when programming and I occasionally play (SC2 mostly).
If I end up with MX, they would be MX Red.

Customization would be great, I'd love spherical keycaps, so maybe the Topre 30 Anniversary (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=66883.0) but pricier than the other options and fullsize.

Thats a beautiful looking keyboard. Although the small space bar wouldn't work for me personally. Have fun with your search!

Welcome to Geekhack!

A Topre keyboard would be great, but be aware that there are limited (very limited) options to customise them.

Next to no options to customize. Personally, I would suggest that anyone just starting out get an MX board first and get their feet wet a bit with keyboards. Then try a Topre out. Unless you don't plan on having multiple keyboards but let's face it, you're on GH now. There's no question that if you stay, you will have 2 or 3 keyboards minimum by the end of 2015. And an empty wallet.

Novatouch is an alternative to that - Topre goodness with MX compatibility!

Yes I may end up with both types by the end of next year.  :)
My customization choice is even more limited as I really want spherical keycaps.

SA profile?

Good choice!

There have been a few SA keycap sales this year, it seems quite possible that there will be more in 2015.

I've quickly tried some boards which confirmed my research.
Imho, Black is too heavy, didnt like the feel and sound of brown and to a lesser extent blue. I can definitely see the comfort playing with reds. (mostly filco boards)
Loved the feel and feedback of hhkb.
I have yet to try topre real force as well as sphericals.

The penumbra, toxic... Gbs are appealing though I am heading to topre with JIS layout, cylindrical at first to reduce the cost.

The Hi-Pro is almost twice the price as the TKL non-silent variable weight. I dont know if it s worth it though it looks gorgeous, especially as I d prefer a TKL. I may head to the silent TKL for now.

Unfortunately as soon as you turn towards Topre things start getting expensive and difficult to find!
