I was told a while ago that every once in a while (maybe towards the end of the year), someone does a "grab bag" of keys that you can buy. I'm really interested in having keys from all types of sets on my poker at the same time and so I would love something like this. Does anyone have any information about this? I've seen the signature plastics bags that were for sale, unfortunately they look out of stock as of now. Are there any other sources because I REALLY want to buy a bunch of random caps!

Well, if you want them right now, the classifieds are your best bet. SP does the grab bags every year

SP is pretty much the only vendor that does such a sale. For a reasonable price (plus silly shipping if you live outside the US) you get a huge bag with around 1000 random keycaps.
90% are crap, hence the name. Of the other 10%, if you're lucky, you might get half a dozen really good keycaps, the rest might be novelty keycaps that you don't usually see e.g. random colour, unexpected legend, a small part of a recently released set.

What time of the year do they do that?

The last one was Feb-2014.
The one before that was Jul-2013.
Seems like roughly every 6 to 8 months, although if that is the case then crap bags should have gone on sale around Oct-2014, which they did not.
Perhaps early next year?

The first time they did it there were a lot of desirable caps to be had in there. The last one kinda sucked. Of 2 5lb bags, I wound up with about 9.7lbs of crap. Very disappointing.

The time before last I had 4 Hapsters and a few other nice keycaps.
Last time I had pretty much all crap. I did get a silver Esc key and blank silver key - that was probably the best of the bunch. Which says a lot, really.
A couple of people got a full set of Day[9]TV keycaps - that seems pretty neat.

It was mostly a lot of fun to sort through them. But yeah, most of it was crap.
By selling off some caps you'll probably break even and have a whole box of literally random caps left.

I would love to pick up a crap bag one day. How much did they cost in previous sales? I imagine it wouldn't be cheap to ship overseas.

The last one was US$30.00 plus US$29.35 shipping to Australia. Makes it nearly $60 for a bag of crap :p

I still have a lot of keycaps from my six grab bags. But I sorted them, and can assure you that 'random' is NOT random. Because you're really getting SP's leftovers, there is an uneven distribution of keycaps. EG I don't have many WASD of any color or profile.

I am more than happy to sell to you but do yourself a favor and examine what I actually have.
Reality check: more than 70% of all my many thousands of keycaps were black blanks. More or less this holds true in previous years too. It's not at all true that just because you get 6000 keycaps in six bags, means that you are likely to have at least 20-30 of each legend to choose from.
