Title: help with sick keyboard
Post by: binome on Sat, 27 December 2014, 11:53:49
i have a cm storm quickfire rapid keyboard and have had lots of trouble with it. now the keyboard itself is very nice... but giving it a detachable micro usb cable was probably a bad idea. soon it became loose and wouldnt stay in. so i took the board apart and wired the cable straight to the main pcb omitting the little micro usb board. everything was fine for a while but soon it started acting up in games. lots of "button presses" i didnt make and so fourth. upon inspection the socket for the cable has come completely off the main pcb. i suspect this lot of boards weren't heated hot enough to properly melt the solder because it came apart so easily. needless to say im out of my warranty but would like to repair and keep using this board. after researching i realize i probably shouln't have removed the micro usb controller board. is there a place i could send it to to have it properly repaired?

thanks in advance for any help! :D

Welcome to Geekhack!

The USB port on several keyboards is delicate - basically there is not much holding the socket onto the PCB, and with the silly angles you have to push the cable in it is not surprising that they break.

Depending on which country you are in, you can find various people offering keybaord repair services in several countries in artisan services (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=160.0).

Please be aware that some are away or on holiday at the moment - but you can at least send an email or PM to get things moving.

I have a QFR too, I have been using it on and off for more than a year.  Although I do tend to leave the cable plugged in when swapping keyboards around, I do treat it with care.

So far not a single problem :)

Although I do understand that accidents can happen.

I guess I should be fine as I have plugged in the removable cable when I first took it out of the box and then have never taken it out and don't plan to afterwards. Hopefully the QFR will provide years of reliable service.

As long as you don't lift the keyboard without also lifting the cable.  Otherwise the weight of the cable could bend the socket loose.

My KeyCool 87 has a little plastic thing that clips over the cable once it is plugged in to stop all that sort of nonsense.  A shame more keyboards don't have them.
