Title: Kiibohd 11 - Bay Area Monthly Keyboard Meetup - 2015/01/31

Massdrop has offered to host this month's meetup at their new HQ in the SF Financial District. Lots more room in this office, including actual space to do presentations :))

January 31st 2015 @ 1 PM

BART is the most convenient way to get to Massdrop. It's a short 3 minute walk from Montgomery St. Station. 10th story.
There is a security guard in the lobby that you may have to check-in with.

I'll be bringing my usual assortment of rare keyboards (the number depends on my means of transportation). Let me know if anyone has specific requests.

The focus on this meetup will be around keyboard ergonomics.
jacobolus will be doing a presentation on more ergonomic keyboard findings.
Jesses from keyboard.io has some research to present as well.

Also, going to try something new.
radio_killah, suggested it in the last meetup thread. We'll be doing a live soldering demo of an Infinity Keyboard to help attendees learn to solder :D The intent is to have the more experienced solder techs go first and give some advice for the novices.

After the keyboard is soldered up, we'll do a draw for who gets to keep the keyboard :thumb:
You have to be at the meetup to be eligible for the draw.

Whether I can manage that or not, I’m going to bring a big box of signature plastics keycaps, basically one of every 1x1, 1x1.5, 1x2 and 2x1 keycap they make (DSA, SA, DCS). As well as examples of all the 1u shapes from about 10 other types of keycap profiles.

Caltrain is nicer now, but take Bart if you're going to walk. The Bart station is really close to the new massdrop office.

Take caltrain up to Millbrae than switch over to bart. That is the best way to do it for you since your coming from south bay.

So it turns out that the waterjet cutters at TechShop (both San Francisco and San José branches) are down for maintenance for ~ a week, so I can’t actually finish making the little props I wanted to make to demonstrate various keycap profiles. I bought a 2x2' sheet of 16 ga stainless steel a couple days ago, but now have no good way to cut shapes out of it.

I’m still going to bring the box of SP keycaps and several different profiles of Alps keycaps, but I don’t know if I really have all that much useful to lecture about without some good props to show what I’m talking about.

Can you just put the switches in an empty plate (like the infinity we will be building)?

I mostly forgot to take pictures entirely, I think the only thing I actually took pictures of was the Pok3r. I was too busy playing with the shiny butterfly/soldering/listening to things/poking keyboards. I wound up with the keyboard so I'll take a picture of it and the semi-random caps that ended up on it at the meet for you when I'm not about to pass out in a caffeine-crash/aftermath-of-violent-motion-sickness stupor. (No keyboards were harmed in the process of destroying the platform at the Castro Valley BART station, fear not.)

Jacobolus's demo with the actual physical row layouts filled in some gaps I have in relative-row-positioning. Individually the illustrations may have little value since it's somewhat, if not mostly relative, but once he put so much together and so well, combined with the physical samples...yea, that **** is pimp. There is NO WAY to get that depth of info without the physical samples. I know. I've tried for years. Lotta effort and time, thanks for that. And thanks for posting the fine-gauge hand wiring video, I figured you were telling a whopper...so I'm really, really sorry for writing on Massdrops bathroom wall "Jacobolus is a big fat Harvard liar". I'm sure the graffiti will wash off eventually

Thanks to Massdrop for hosting, it's a LOT of work and generous. Andrew sure brings far more info/insight to the table than I anticipated. Who woulda thought that from a CIA-reject that travels the world to buy keycaps and fountain pens? But he DID fall down on the near-empty Keg-O-Rator :( And as I was stripping down to go to sleep on the bright yellow beds they have in the office, Will came up and said, "Dude, those are COUCHES, GO HOME". But seriously, I really need Massdrop to hit it big, so they can get a parking garage...street parking downtown SF is pricey and a little rough.

It's very cool seeing everybody, the regulars, newbies, and one-offs. Hope that the meetups tie people together more at one level or another. I regret not hanging with every single person there, or always following up, but there is so much going on, and contrary to my professional life (100% total death-grip control), when it comes to Geekers/Geekhack, I have a tendency to let things happen organically.

Thanks Haata for being the driving force, these meetups are no small thing. A lot of commitment to have laid the groundwork and consistency, and getting others involved to add important features to these meetups. Tremendous value. Goes to show some good things come from Canada. Amazing.

FYI:
When I kept going outside to feed the parking meter, there were a few homeless looking peeps on the sidewalk. One particularly crusty and disheveled individual kept scribbling on a tattered notepad and muttering "...keyboard science...keyboard science...they have it all wrong...it's keyboard science..." But don't worry, Massdrop has a guard at the door to keep out the Rip-raff.
