Title: KeyMouse on Kickstarter (Mouse/Keyboard hybrid)
Post by: wasabah on Mon, 05 January 2015, 05:57:26
Not affiliated with the Kickstarter or their team in any way, I just thought this might interest some people here.
It's basically two bluetooth mice with each one of them carrying half of a full keyboard.

Rubberdome, right?

The keys on that look way too small.

That one that was on kickstarter is the same concept, and uses Cherry MX switches.

One of the clay prototypes has Cherry ML switches. For all we know, the ones that look complete may not even work.

The keys look too small to be comfortable.  Although I would interested in checking out a prototype.

That's the first thought that came to mind. But still, think of all the money and time that went into the development of this.

Why on earth would you want to put the keyboard on top of the mouse? I'd expect you'd have to readjust your typing position often when moving the mouse. If they'd put a trackball into one of the thumb slots that might have been interesting. But this layout is very odd and I imagine people will be frustrated adopting to it.

This is going to be one (two) huge, heavy mice.

And terribly tiny keyboard keys.

The worst of both worlds.

Same thing but already reached goal. Plus looks badass

Great idea. Poor execution. I hope this doesnt become the "next big thing" with keyboards.

We either have a thousand plus idiots, or we have one idiot, me.

That keyboard/ mouse/ joystick is very unlikely to be easy and comfortable to use for hours. Normally when the odds are 1129 to 1 you shouldn't bet on the 1, but I honestly will be pitching myself as the smart guy who is calling shots on the emperor's new clothes here.

Not saying is going to be useable but the design is beautiful

+1 ^ to this.  Exactly right.  I couldn't have said it better.

Very strange looking item. I dont like it much, but people use trackballs so what the heck do I know.

Rubberdome, right?

The prototype in the pictures has Cherry ML switches.  We are changing to Cherry MX switches for the next prototype and final product.

Do the mice not feel heavy?

This is outrageous. If you change to Cherry MX, the mice will be very heavy and not at all useful for real work.

This looks just like the King's Assembly that's already been up for a while

Yeah, these things have one big problem by design: friction. Mice have smooth skates, keyboards rubber feet—for a reason.
You know what happens, when someone, who suffers from the Parkinson's disease, tries to click a mouse button without moving the mouse (or the other way around)? Well, here you have the same problem with the whole keyboard.

I love the concept and it seems like there was a lot of thought put into it.

However, with Cherry MX switches in the new design, I'm seeing one heavy pointing device. Even with PTFE (Teflon) skates and a low-friction mouse pad (hell, let's use a PTFE mousepad), that's a lot of inertia. I can't imagine that it'll be easy to point accurately with this. Then again, if they can keep the weight of each unit under, say, 180 grams (what I'd consider the absolute maximum weight, including battery, for a mouse), well... is that possible with PCB mounted Cherry MX switches?

Now a  commercially available mechanical split keyboard with a 50mm class trackball, like that amazing DIY one I read a build log of here, that I would buy. And no need to worry about weight with those. But I can see why the developers didn't go that direction- there's not much market for trackballs since mice went optical.

I just can't help thinking that this might be one of the few places where you'd actually want RD+Membrane or Cherry ML switches.

just fyi not that many people here like MX browns which is apparently what you're using in the final design??
and if it is difficult to resolder switches/open switch tops youd probably lose lots of potential buyers on GH

With MX switches I would still be curious to try it for WoW, but I don't think I could convince myself to pony up the cash for it.  I think I will stick with my Naga Epic and IBM F AT.

I think it's a great concept and look forward to seeing what reviews are when its delivered. Very forward thinking, but obviously has many potential failure points. Unlikely everything will be well thought/engineered out...but know really knows.

Great time for keyboards!

Isn't that a really bad setup that'd give you RSI/carpal tunnel in minutes? Seems like the pressure on your wrists and the angle would not be good for you.

Reminds me of the BAT or the Kinesis combined with mouse functionality.

I think you're dead on about the rsi.  Even if the angle won't do it, imagine moving that entire thing while trying not to type--you're putting your hand in an odd 'force, but not so much force' mode that's a strain.  It's why all our mechanical keyboards have a definitive stop to each key that allows us to not have to strain about how much force to hit a key with for optimal speed.
