Title: Should i buy this? Do i need it?
Post by: clueyd on Wed, 07 January 2015, 11:37:02
Found Cooler Master CM Storm QuickFire TK WHITE EDITION for 142 dollars, should I buy it? I generally stay away and do not like CM products and already have a tenkeyless Filco and Shine II, but the white edition looks too nice and is limited. Its 105 dollars + 37 dollars to ship from Australia.

Personally I would stay away from the TK but that is just my opinion. :D

The bottom row is non-standard.
That means a no.

Personally there are other things I would rather spend that 142 on.

Where in the world are you? In USA and Europe you should be able to get the TK for less in a local store.

If you're after something with similar layout... maybe you should look at the RedScarf III? It's a kit board, so you can custom it just how you like things. It has more interesting feature and is about the same price.

Much better alternatives out there to be honest with you.

Definitely would not spend that much on it, limited edition or not. CM build quality is going to be sub-par and it has non-standard keys.

No point spending so much money on an average board.

If you must, just paint the keyboard yourself.

Have you guys thought perhaps the problem is the Antiquated layouts accommodated by the keycap sets?

Seriously.. the standard bottom row is crummy imho..  More practically, it should be all 1x and the space bar..

Hahaha, I have that same keyboard. My thoughts on it is that it's not bad, but for that price point it isn't the best choice. It's a standard gaming mechanical keyboard in a special 'white edition' color.

i ended up selling my quickfire tk because of the keycap material and the layout incompatibility but i liked typing on it

I am a noob so I have this KB.  :-[ I bought it for its looks, that's all. It is not a bad keyboard but a big portion of what you are paying goes to those white LEDs and "limited edition".
The non-standard bottom row is pain if you want to change key caps. Good luck trying to find a replacement for that 6.5 unit space bar. If I remember correctly only Logitech, Corsair and CM uses 6.5 unit space bar; and only Corsair sells them separately with their WASD keys. I could not get one so I had to modify the stems of a 6.25 unit. The process was not fun but it was rewarding.

Even the space bar should be 1x. That's the space keys I use.

What do you mean? It should all be thumb keys in angled ergonomic clusters (4 keys per cluster) so you can use combinations. See my avatar for details.

Or on a normal horizontal stagger QWERTY board, there should be one pinkie key per side and two thumb keys per thumb, like this:
