Title: Key Noise on Bounce Back
Post by: capnyank on Thu, 08 January 2015, 17:35:43
Hi all. I am new to this forum and mechanical keyboards in general so I apologize if this is a noob question. I recently picked up a CM Storm QuickFire Rapid TKL and am loving it! I added o-rings to the keycaps and I like what this has done to the sound and feel overall. However it seems to have accentuated a problem with the backspace key that is a bit annoying.

The backspace key sounds completely different than any key on the board and it took a while to figure out why. It seems to be making an extra rattle-y clack on the bounce back. Has anyone ever seen this? Why would this key sound different than the others? My only guess is that since it's at the top right it has plenty of space around the cap for sound to escape whereas the enter and shift keys are surrounded by other keys.

Thanks!

Is the cap seated all the way on the stabs?

The board is at my desk at work. I'll double-check everything tomorrow. Thanks!

Well, I dunno, but all space bars sound different than the rest of the caps.  It's the nature being the biggest cap on the board, I think.  But maybe something weird is going on to make it especially noisy.  I dunno.  Maybe pics?  Sound recording?  sumfin?

Backspace not space bar :-)

A problem with the stabiliser does sound likely since they're a faff to get back together properly, and backspace is short enough that you might not notice the lack of stabilisation resulting from the mistake.

It kinda does sound like the stabilizer is making some noise, but I still think the reason it sounds different is due to it's placement.

I did notice that the backspace stabilizer seems to be a bit 'looser' than some of the others, meaning when the cap is off it flops back and forth a little more freely. Some of the stabs I can position upright and they will hold there, while the backspace key will lay back down. Not sure why this is since there doesn't appear to be any damage to the stabilizer.

Oh well, this is a used board and the overall effect is really slight, but noticeable (especially if you type like I do!)
