Title: Void the warranty of new keyboard in the name of science?
Post by: Hyde on Thu, 08 January 2015, 22:37:41
Since Type Heaven is on sale on NCIX for $150 (free ground shipping) and yes I know we get horrible prices in Canada.

http://www.ncix.com/detail/topre-za0100-type-heaven-capacitive-92-86203-1315.htm

In any case so I'm about to make this purchase and use it for parts to make my own RealForce 104U 45g uniform.  At least I can sell the variable frankenstein Type Heaven after to recoup some money back.

Though now I'm feeling uneasy to pop open and voids the warranty of a complete brand new board (at least the 104U is about 4 months old).

Who here does this on a regular basis?

Warranty means nothing to me. I take brand new keyboards out of the box, and disassemble right away almost every time. Just do it. :)

I wouldn't be concerned if I where you.

At this point I don't even think about warranties half the time. You gotta take risks in life, you know?

Haha yeah I'll agree I've never had a keyboard break on me yet.  So I guess I probably shouldn't worry about warranty.

It's just the thought you know, it's like it's so newwwwww and shinyyyy~ hahaha.

But yes I will be a man and follow geekhack spirit.

:P

So you have been dissecting your Filcos for fun?

I can't imagine how many lovely Filcos you have violated...  :p

If you make a post in classifieds, you can probably even find someone who wants a variable Type Heaven board and is willing to pay full price for it (or even a bit more), making it effectively cost you just the price of the shipping.

When I visited, there were at least 3 completed ones that had been modded and parts for at least another 5 that looked new.

I take apart almost everything, especially if it's a keyboard and I know I can repair it if it breaks. Who needs a warranty when you can save time and do a better job fixing it yourself?

anyway, you can likely recoup most of it by reselling as jacobolus says. variables usually sell for a little less, and used keyboards a little less as well, but all-in-all I think it's worth.

Then again, I'm probably biased because I support hacking on all your stuff, but in this case you have very little to lose.
