Title: What is a good speaker set up for a desk setup
Post by: Bromono on Mon, 12 January 2015, 11:16:59
I primarily like listen to EDM such as Giraf***e and Porter. But I do listen to a lot of 90s as well. What monitors would you recommend that are not to crazy in price.

IMO headphones > speakers, but you know.

Define not crazy in price?

I know a lot of people go gaga for these: http://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-Premium-Powered-Speaker-White/dp/B005OSR1C8

Are you really set on a 2.0 setup (monitors) or would you be okay with a 2.1? If 2.1, I would say go for the Klipsch speakers at the price you're entertaining. Lots of bass, but nice. Nice mids/highs. Nothing mindblowing, but they're good for the money. Very fun sound.

Also, these have a good reputation: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=20185

The Klipsch ProMedia can be found at Best Buy easily. Those above... I don't know.

Not really set on anything. I was also thinking about headphones with a amp/dac.

Have audio engine a5+ myself. Can't imaging downgrading to something cheaper.

I've heard great things about the audioengine a5's. Is desk space an issue for you? I have a pair of Tannoy Reveal 501a's at home, and they are my favorite near field monitor (that I have personally used, the ADAM A7X might be the best that I've heard, but I don't own a pair.

For the price, the Reveal's are great, but, they are a studio monitor. Nothing really fun or exciting about them.

Sigh..

One of the biggest hurdles of DESKTOP PC audio...  is PC NOISE..  as you know.. we got some VERY power hungry devices nowadayz in the desktop..  There's allot of inducances goin on.. and DC leaks..

The most important aspect to get good audio from from a PC is galvanic isolation..

This can be done using the USB GI,   OR  Spdif (optical) OR GI coax-spdif..

If you just plug it into the sound card... and a intensive task comes into the pc pipe..

NO doubt, there's gonna be some serious noise..

So.. what to do..  PC > optical > Receiver > Speakers...  <This is the easiest way to do it>

OR...    PC > GI Usb > DAC > AMP > Speaker

OR...  PC > optical > dac > earbuds,  <most intimate unaltered sound>

OR...  PC > GI Usb > usb dac > amp > headphone, < drive bigger headphones>

When you got a 2 meter long desk space is not an issue

I've been using these 100 dollar Bose speakers for a few years. Great quality. Mobile. Cheap.

Those speakers look really nice.  Me like.

And as for PC noise, you just need a decent case, or failing that, some soundproofing. My windowed Fractal R4 is near silent, even with a massive CPU cooler, and two GPUs.

I think they're talking about electromagnetic interference, or "line noise." It's the buzzing sound that comes through speakers and headphones when an electronic device is near the speaker. No amount of soundproofing will overcome that.
