Title: is 'gaming' with topre a good idea?
Post by: snipars on Tue, 13 January 2015, 07:48:26
I love how topre feels for everything, i think the hhkb is my perfect keyboard and topres are perfect imo for playing games, but i've heard that there's a chance of the rubber domes wearing out
how big of a risk is this?

ok, good to hear, honestly i wouldn't mind an excuse to buy a black blank silenced hhkb, but i'd hate to feel like i'm wearing the keyboard out by using it

You can't be worried about wearing your keyboard out by using it, why would you have a keyboard and not use it? Especially something as lovely as a hhkb.

You wouldn't "wear out" the domes gaming any more than you would typing.

Do you like Topre switches?

Yes? Game with them.

No? Find another switch you like.

I think you'll get bored of your HHKB before you manage to wear out the board.

enjoy your board, love your board, and use it however you want. i don't believe you are at risk of wearing out your domes.

i love gaming with my hhkb. i have the left meta key set to fn so I can do F1-F6 easily without having to move my hand far at all.

been gaming on a FC660C for the past few months, spamming 111111111111 key like crazy (people who play GW2 know what i mean), no problems so far :D

I love my Topre. But for gaming, MX red is better.

I do feel my WASD keys are softer than the others after gaming on my FC660C. Felt bad for mushing them down so hard so I game on Cherry MX instead.

I play FPS but I feel playing SC2 or mobas are fine for Topres

All you would have to do is swap those 4 domes for 4 other domes that are hardly used.

^ This.

My daily driver is Topre and since it's too much hassle to swap keyboard every time I game, I just game with it.

Though gaming with Topre is still perfect fine, just relatively MX Red is better for gaming.

It's like saying 95% is better than 85% lol.

The only issues is that if you end up playing games that need the F stripe on the HHKB you either have to rebind those keys or use Fn

I don't like topre for gaming.
Although I guess it's fine for fighting games. I played Skull Girls with it yesterday and it worked well enough.
I was still terrible at the game, but it worked.

i find the hhkb perfect for gaming, pressing leftwin (remapped to fn) and 1-8 in csgo i find much easier than reaching for a function row
i was just wondering if the switches would deteriorate from playing games with them, and that doesn't seem to be the case

A, I wouldn't worry about wearing out Topre switches. They are there to be used and enjoyed and they are highly durable.

B, Game on whatever you like. I liked MX reds for years but since switching to Topre (55g <3) its all I use now and sold my MX board. Hasn't stopped me from maintaining Global Elite rank in CSGO.

I use to go by the whole "gaming switch" thing but it makes f'all difference IMO. Use what feels the best to you.

This reminds me, isn't Topre switch rated for 50 million clicks?

I think the math works out around 95 key presses per minute none stop for 1 year (like no sleep no break).

Like people said you'd probably buy a new keyboard before the current one wears out.  :P

Thanks for asking the question snipars. I just got a HHKB and I was very hesitant to use it for gaming. But I guess since I love how it feels I'm going to keep using it!

I game with Topre, in fact I am gaming with Topre right now (well, technically paused to check the forum, but the game is still running in the background).

There are also many threads about this.

I would hope such a expensive keyboard would not wear out for a very long time. Wouldn't worry about that but MX is better for gaming anyway.

If you enjoy using it for gaming, you should use it for gaming..

I love Topre and I use my Topre boards a lot more than my Cherry....but for gaming, I don't like using Topre....and variable Topre for gaming?  No way...But that is just purely subjective on my part...

They're all made to last so I doubt you're going to wear it out and even if you did, you got a lot of use out of them and that is really the whole point...

Seriously use that board like its no tomorrow. Don't save it for Sunday best. Enjoy life and use nice things. I prefer Topre even to MX reds for gaming. Purely because Topres are sex.

Anyway on topic, I think one thing to consider is preference and  play style.

Personally when I play I tend to hold some keys right above the actuation point in anticipation of something happening. For that reason, linear switches are awful for me in the heat of battle.
Meanwhile, anything tactile or clicky generally allows me to stay right above the actuation point without having to put much thought into it. I think the reason many people would go against the non linear switches is that there's more chance of bottoming out (almost unavoidable with topre) and the reset point is farther off from the actuation point.

Just to pitch in with a little content....

My Topre HiPro is definitely a capable gaming board. Testing it beside a board with Browns and Blues reveals no difference in performance whatsoever. There's a sense that the Cherries have a more 'intuitive' feel to them (whatever that means), but really, there's nothing between the types of switch.

I've also been testing the HiPro against the Logitech G910 recently (the Romer is the marginally better gaming switch by the way). It's a fairly balanced comparison given that both have unusual keycaps. The rumour is that the spherical caps on the HiPro are less suited to gaming that cylindricals. I've found the exact opposite to be true. I love the HiPro's caps for gaming. Similarly, the G910 sports 'unique' caps that claim to make gaming easier. After a month of gaming and typing on the G910, I can reveal that this is a load of marketing nonsense. The Romer switch is where the Logitech's secret lies. The caps just get in the way of typing.

So, Topre switches are perfectly capable for gaming, but like many others, I'd say that you should invest in a Realforce if you work as much as you play. Otherwise, Blues, Browns and Reds will serve you just as well.

One final thing: For build quality, the Realforce board is noticeably better made than my beloved Filcos, and in a different league to the likes of Corsair and Logitech (both good board manufacturers). I'm not even going to discuss Razer ;-)

I really like typing on topre but for gaming it feels too gentle, I like a more tactile switch for gaming. I don't know if this is actually a thing but the keystroke on topre feels shorter than my ergo clears and I prefer the longer press when gaming.

I'm also in the camp that Topres are fine for gaming, but red Cherry is better. I currently have a red Cherry keyboard just for gaming, while my other daily drivers are all tactile switches (Topre, Matias, blue Cherry, buckling spring).
