One thing I've seen that I find interesting is that the 23U PCB is setup to use all 1x keycaps or have 2 2x unit keys if the manufacturer decided to.

They almost always do, if the PCB supports it.

Yeah, you are probably right, wouldn't make a lot of sense to design a crippled controller when it's probably a small incremental effort to support the entire PCB. I wonder what code the extra contact sends.
