One pair of shoes is all that you will be allowed to own.
Production only boards, no modifications?
SSK.
I would have to go full-sized, since I would lose the ability to supplement something smaller with a numpad (that's two boards). Even if I didn't think I would use it, I couldn't make the choice knowing that I could never use a numpad for the rest of my life.
My choice is 4704 107-key Model F, since Model F BS is the best and that board has the most compatible layout (of the boards I own). If I had an F-122, I might have said that. :)
I refuse to choose! I reject your reality and substitute my own!
456GT w/ vintage MX Blues, my dream board
i've bought and sold quite a few keyboard before settling down with my kmac happy w/ 62g clears.
crazy how i almost sold this thing because SA profile was not for me and was ruining my overall experience. cherry profile is life
sweet, sweet heresy456GT w/ vintage MX Blues, my dream board
Blues in an OTD board is heresy :))
FC660C, BAM!
I know quite a few of you have quite an extensive keyboard collection. But then the hammer falls, and you can only use one keyboard for the rest of your days.
What would you decide on? Ouch!
No turning back or being wishy-washy.
My choice would be (suprisingly) my IBM 51G8572 (White Label) Manufactured for IBM by Lexmark. It's my favorite keyboard. A hint of nostalgia to me. But then again I'm kinda biased toward one line of keyboards.
but does typing on [a Model F] actually feel different enough from model M or UnicompYes, it feels and sounds quite different IMO.
(and I mean objective assessment, not crazy hyperbole)? You’re the guy who got mad about the difference between 45g and 55g Topre domes being too minor, right? Well this is a somewhat comparable difference, so you’d probably be disappointed.
Why is the model F so much more loved than model M? I know the innards are different (beam spring capacitive), but does typing on one actually feel different enough from model M or Unicomp (and I mean objective assessment, not crazy hyperbole)?

The switches feel lighter and crisper, yes. But they also have a more lively, poppy quality beyond that. It's a subtle difference, when I first tried it I was a bit underwhelmed. But within a week I found it hard to go back to the M because it felt muddy and lifeless by comparison.

Thanks for explaining the differences between Model F and M. It sounds like I would really enjoy Model F, since I like crisp, light, and tactile (which is why I like blue Cherry). I definitely like buckling spring on the Unicomp, and if it's more light and crisp and responsive than that, then it's an subjective improvement IMO. But it seems model F keyboards only come in hulking sizes and there are no SSK versions available? That's a deal-breaker for me, unfortunately. The closest you'll find is an unsaver, which has no numpad, but still has the 24F row like on terminals

My Drunken Skull is on HHKB. Only got Checker Clacks on my Model M. Haven't even got an SSK :(

Our world is in peril. Thorpie, the spirit of the Planet GH, can no longer stand the terrible keyboards plaguing our planet. She gives five magic rings to five special young people. From Africa, Sygaldry with the power of earth. From the North America, Carinaguts with the power of fire. From the Soviet Union, demik with the power of wind. From Asia, monotagary with the power of water and from South America, Sencha with the power of heart. Rubber dome, bleh... I know, I know... but it has to be my MS Natural Keyboard Pro that I have been using since 1999.Well, they made a split BS keyboard, but good luck finding it without spending an arm and a legShow Image(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/26/MS_Natural_Keyboard_Pro.JPG/1024px-MS_Natural_Keyboard_Pro.JPG)
Never given me a problem. When spend 10 hours in a day writing software, I cannot use a TKL or anything like that. I need it all. I wish I were a whiz and could figure out how to put mechanical keys in it, but I cant. I have many mechanical keyboards for fun, and I use them. But for really banging on my keyboard, I need my natural. Not the BS 4000, not the f'ed up Elite. The real deal Pro. I bought 4 of them about 10 years ago, just in case mine decided to kick the bucket, but haven't needed any of the backups yet, its still going strong.
That said. My first and favorite keyboard was my IBM PC model F.Show Image(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/56/IBM_Model_F_XT.png)
If I could have that keyboard with the layout of the Natural Pro, I would be in heaven (and would pay good money, hint hint hackers).

I took 3 of those Natural keyboards to Goodwill, because they made it harder to cross my hands when I type.

I guess some people have real talent these days. I know there are pianists that can do that, but that's a different keyboard entirely.

Mofel F I can understand, not a Model M. They're cheap, flimsy toys in comparison.

Mine's over 20 years old and still working fine. I like my toy. Let's compare that to your choice.

Plebians and one keyboard.
Sorry I meant HHKB Type-S
Just came here to say this again
HHKB specifcally Type-s
Once I'm done swapping domes between my RF 87U silenced variable weight and my RF 87U 55g, the resulting silenced 87U 55g will rule over all other keyboards I have. You'll need a Digilog case after swapping the domes... then you'll have a keyboard to rule them all (except for the HHKB Type-S, which just plain rules over everything)
Plebians and one keyboard.
Sorry I meant HHKB Type-S
My LZ.Not your beautiful GON? :'(
My reasoning came down to rarity. I can always buy and build a twin GON, but the chances of my buying another LZ-S in original sky blue are almost none. Trust me though, I love my GON and it's going with me to the grave. ;)My LZ.Not your beautiful GON? :'(
This thread is like:Forgive my intrusion but I'm getting the impression this is more accurate:
1. Model F fan club
2. HHKB fan club
3. The rest
Just to be clear, there is a correct answer to this thread. That answer is "Mira."

TIL off keyboard forums: The 6lb, 20-year old, still-in-perfect-working-condition IBM Model M, is a 'flimsy toy'. Anyway, I own two and love them, and if this is really gonna be a keyboard for life choice, then I gotta go with the keyboard I'm almost sure will last me for life.
Do that many people really own Model Fs? They seem kinda hard to come by. And which ones are people using? This one?: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:IBM_Model_F_AT.png. What do you do for for that sixkey cluster (home/end/pgup, etc) and arrow keys? You just toggle the scroll lock a lot?
