Title: WhatPulse Team
Post by: Shyfe on Wed, 12 August 2009, 03:34:00
Since we are all keyboard enthusiasts here, I decided making a WhatPulse team for us would be a good idea

WhatPulse is simply a keystroke and mouse clicks counter. You create an account, download the software, and it counts the number of keystrokes you makes it and stores it on the server.

It is definitely not a keylogger. It only counts the number of keystrokes and stores no information on what you pressed. I have used this software in the past many years ago and started using it again and it has always been fine.

Simply go here to download: http://whatpulse.org/downloads/
Go here to register: http://whatpulse.org/register/
Then join our team here: http://whatpulse.org/stats/teams/16300/
Password is "click"

Hopefully we can climb the ranks. Thanks if you join guys.

Sorry but there is no way that I would install that kind of software on my system. I really don't understand this new concept of sharing everything about your self with every one else. What happened to privacy and the desire to keep it.

It doesn't do anything except count your keystrokes. Everytime you press anything it simply adds 1 to your counter. It does not tell what you've pressed. You can tell because of the many users using it and the amount of keystrokes. If it shared your keystrokes, they would have all lost their passwords already. Googling "is whatpulse safe" also doesn't return any negatives.

You must be from Texas.

For the record, I'm not too fond if this kind of thing, either, and I'm not really the paranoid type.  That, and there's no way I'm installing that on my work PC.

alright, well i'm rather disappointed some of you won't join but it's your opinion. i assure you it won't log keystrokes though.

The software kept popping up inane error windows on two machines I had this installed on. Didn't install it again after upgrading/reinstalling the OS.

It's not that I have a fear of logging keystrokes, I just don't see the point of it. I mean, to a degree, even the most worthless of things has a reason. I use Twitter to subscribe to bits of news from open standards and js developers, and also to post my own photos. I use facebook to keep in touch with the "less hip" people online because they can't get their email working. Something like this doesn't really have a use, and it's only hope is that it "catches on" for no reason what so ever

I would not even install it on my home machine. I'm not overly paranoid myself either but at the same time I'm a realist as well. If they are so honest and open why isn't the source for the logger not available?  The whole thing just seems fishy.

it's not open source because then people could figure out how to cheat and send in millions of keystrokes they don't have.

here is more information about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WhatPulse

again, if you google things like "whatpulse keylogger" or "is whatpulse safe" nothing bad comes up, in addition the thousands of users actively using it.

Difficult crowd so don't take it personally.  Try getting them to vote on a poll.

That's because most of us are old farts that have been around computers for a very long time and understand what can be figured out from innocent anonymous data. It would blow your mind how much someone with access to the right databases can find out about you with just some very basic information.

problem is the younger generation just accepts that invasion of privacy.

I mean if its not corporations doing the tracking then its the government itself (like in china where they tried to mandate government sponsored spyware on every computer sold in china).

I was reading something recently, I think in the nyt, about this, about how the younger generation doesnt care cuz its all they've known.

Yea that is general ripster but with a little more you could get extremely specific. With just very little information you can get someone's entire life history. That is why I'm careful to only let general information out nothing specific. But iMav with his server logs could get alot closer than you did. But I'm also buried in the noise of my very common name which helps a whole lot.

It's not that I'm paranoid or anything and to be honest I used to be not as bothered by letting some specific data out. But I really had my eyes opened when I got access to one of those databases I mentioned. Since then I'm a little more careful about what I give out.

Kind of hard to find your keystrokes in the right database when it isn't stored in any at all.

Privacy considerations aside, why do I really care about how many keystrokes I make? You just have a different concept of fun than the rest of us, that's not going to change in this thread.

WhatSourcecode?

The time when it is illegal to have a rogue terminal on the interwebs is ominously nigh.

This actually might be worth running on my idling machine at home, just so I could write an autohotkey script and pad my results into the billions over a few days :P

Ok, I'm going to raise this thread from the dead. My deepest necro-thread revival to date. I just joined the GeekHack team and it's apparently still alive and kicking!

I was updating an old blog post (http://mashby.com/2003/03/come-my-friends-count-with-me-ah-ha-ha-ha/) after a server move and wondered what ever happened to the key counting app I used to use. Saw that WhatPulse (http://whatpulse.org) was still around (even though my original account was not) and figured I'd try it again. Did a quick search here and found that there's a GeekHack team so I joined it.

Anyone else running WhatPulse?
