Title: Clack sale email delay
Post by: thefebruaryman on Wed, 21 January 2015, 12:40:17
Hello everyone, I am relatively new to this forum. Only been on here a few months but I have had the opportunity to enter a few clack sales. In two of the sales I have got my email in 1 second after the count down has reached its mark and have not won. This got me thinking. Is there a delay when sending an email from the UK to the US. And if so how long is that delay?
Could we test this? Say making a emailing program that is linked to a UTC server and a receiver of that email in say the US that has also got a connection to the UTC server.
What your thoughts people? Is this worth testing or am I just bitter for not owning a bro cap?

Had a little look through the thread. Still not found anything on measuring delays yet but some useful stuff in there all the same. Has anyone here built them selves a little email server? Like a ebay sniper but for clacks?

There are so many facets to this, more than just latency between continents.  The location, speed, and load of the email server Bro/Clack is using is probably the major factor, and most of that isn't terribly predictable.  You can do a tracert to see how long it takes to hop through the different nodes, but it's not the same protocol as email so it won't be exact.  Still, could give you a good idea.  Hope that helps.

Edit:  one more thought; you also have to pay attention to the physical and virtual location of your own email server.  For example, if your email is with gmail, it could get spit out from a number of Google servers around the country, and even around the world.

Looks to me like making a php smtp mail server would speed things up a lot. My php skills suck though. Plus thats programming time I just don't have.
I would guess though that there are a few people on here that have built a bot or two. Would be useful for the recent clack factory sales, just look for that 'reply' link tag and boom off it goes. Bit cheeky though
