Title: I made /r/truemk...
Post by: sethk_ on Sat, 24 January 2015, 15:51:58
Hi, I am tired of seeing all the constant circle jerk hate of GeekHack and ClickClack, and other things we do on these forums on the /r/mk sub-reddit, and I feel like it doesn't represent us in a good way, so I decided to create /r/truemk , that way people on Reddit can be introduced to mechanical keyboards, without the bias of which forums are better. I currently have it privated while I work on it, but if anyone would like to help with setting it up, or helping with any of the design, tell me your reddit username, and I can add you so you can go in. Clearly I don't expect much support on here since it is on Reddit and we are on GH, but if anyone would like to help so GH and DT don't get a tainted look, just give me a shout. Also, if anyone has any interest to help with the wiki, feel free to once I add you.

I think this is a cool idea but I don't really see it going anywhere. The average r/mk user just wants to see Corsairs and CM boards with a custom set from wasd, people don't move to GH until they want more from this hobby. Hell, when I started on r/mk I thought artisan caps and kustoms were ridiculous and I really liked ripster. I don't think there will be a strong following for this subreddit, that being said I'll maybe subscribe. Good luck.

I think your trying too hard.
Setting up 'truemk' is only going to spur on the hate becasue your making it seem like we perceive our selves to be fundamentally better than them, which we aren't.
It would be better if you just participated in r/mk and tried to help the people there and contribute more and just worked slowly on making GH seem just like any other forum and see ripster as the heart broken teenager he is.

I feel doing things like this is what is perpetuating the whole "GeekHack vs /r/MK" mentality. If you truly want to stop that attitude than you should just ignore it.

It does make sense with what you are seeing, and I agree, its just that I also started out on reddit, and hated GH, even though I had never been on it, because Ripster makes it seem very strict, and not fun.

I think this is a cool idea but I don't really see it going anywhere. Thanks, and I started out the same way, except I did want to see more, which is what brought me to GH. I loved the way GONs looked, and korean boards, but there is a total of about 2 posts of korean boards on there, so I joined GH to just lurk at the GON and Korean board threads, and thats when I realized that it isn't what Ripster made it out to be.

I feel doing things like this is what is perpetuating the whole "GeekHack vs /r/MK" mentality. If you truly want to stop that attitude than you should just ignore it.
Well, the reason that I wanted to make truemk was so there was a neutral and highly accessible mechanical keyboards forum.

I joined first on r/mk and still visit it, as there are sometimes cool articles and ripster's wiki is actually pretty good. I dislike how there is a split between the communities and the fact that people feel like they have to take Ripster's side on everything since he is the moderator.

What I don't understand is that people are okay and willing to spend $200+ on granite keysets but think spending  that much on collectible keycaps is ludacris.

In my opinion, this very hobby is crazy and a waste of money. A $20 rubber dome gets the same job done as a $900 korean custom keyboard laced with gold.

Doesn't mean I dont love it though. **** is addicting. Still I don't think this attract people away from r/mk. thats what geekhack is for.

I'll be honest and say you most likely aren't going to go anywhere with this. I've been browsing /r/mechanicalkeyboards since before I ever had mine and it's obvious after any scrutiny that there's an animosity between ripster and you guys, albeit he seems to keep going on about it. Just leave it be.

Well, reddit has multi million users with many other forums that people browse, while we have a good bit less. The 2nd result when you google mechanical keyboard is r/mk . Sure, we might be more neutral than reddit, but there is still some heavy bias.

this , it will never reach the popularity of /r/mk and besides ripster attacks towards GH /r/mk is mostly neutral .

Plus, as has been previously stated, the fact that a "neutral" subreddit has to exist, only furthers the fact that it isn't actually neutral. Not to mention that, by posting about it here on GH, it is already not neutral.

Which is the point of /r/truemk , to try and seperate ourselves from /r/mk. I want to use /r/truemk as an entrance and neutral zone for everyone to interact, and to introduce. We don't want people being biased to any forums.

Reddit was a sort of interesting place circa 2006, when it was made up of mostly nerds in the bay area and boston, and was filled with high-level technical conversations, so you could at least learn something while you were wasting time looking at it. Since their goal was to increase their audience without much concern for the direction of the community, within a couple of years it became totally unfocused, catering increasingly to shallow clickbait. Culturally, Reddit is pretty much like network television, strip-malls, and suburban sprawl: an endless sea of mediocrity.

The mechanical keyboards subreddit, more specifically, is a little fiefdom run by a narcissist, but who cares? Most of it is newbies posting pictures and looking for validation; I think it’s fine that it exists in its current form, it’s not doing any harm.

I don’t think reddit, based on the way it functions, is a useful host for a more permanent or serious community. As a rule, most people on reddit aren’t having long-term conversations or building relationships. Everything there is quick and transient, which is why pictures and bad jokes predominate.

Once you break the entry barrier at Geekhack, why would you even go back to reddit at all. What does it have to offer? Geekhack is a community of enthusiasts. r/mk is a bunch of disparate users, posting photos of their keyboards with shoes and upvoting/downvoting others' photos, links, and comments.

And by barrier to entry, I mean that you have to introduce yourself and be willing to participate in the discussion that happens here. There are plenty of helpful people here, who are willing to show you around and answer your questions, you just have to ask.

Geekhack is different things to different people. We don't consider ourselves better than redditors, just different. We may aspire to hold ourselves to a higher standard than some other places on the internet, but I can't for the life of me see how that is a bad thing.

Or you could start encouraging people from GeekHack to post and share at Reddit, being nice and cross posting interesting stuff from here.
Making a closed circle sub at Reddit I doubt will win hearts and minds, only further the opinion that GeekHack is a closed circle community with rules that stretches outside the forum.
I however dont see why both can coexist and have different agendas/target audiences. Think its fair to say that Reddit is more of a stepping stone, an introductory place for mechanical keyboard enthusiast while GeekHack is more of a high level of knowledge and experience.

As far as circle jerk goes I dont see much of a difference, both places have an abundance of it and would be more enjoyable if it didnt have a "us vs them" mentality. I would also suggest that thinking people having to agree with Ripster isnt healthy. Its not really true but that mentality is manifested due to the nature of Reddit, sadly I dont think that need/want/mentality is any stronger there than here.

I know Im part of the issue and will avoid furthering the negative aspects of GeekHack. Even if I enjoy a good pie throwing contest I can see how it lessens the experience of new users and has to be kept in check with out limiting users from expressing different opinions, like if the Clacks really are worth what they are worth and still having room to discus different views on subjective opinion. Like worth, attractiveness, craftsmanship and what the ultimate keyboard should be

That's all I have to say

Even if I enjoy a good pie throwing contest I can see how it lessens the experience of new users and has to be kept in check with out limiting users from expressing different opinions, like if the Clacks really are worth what they are worth and still having room to discus different views on subjective opinion. Like worth, attractiveness, craftsmanship and what the ultimate keyboard should be

That's all I have to say

Or you could start encouraging people from GeekHack to post and share at Reddit, being nice and cross posting interesting stuff from here.
Making a closed circle sub at Reddit I doubt will win hearts and minds, only further the opinion that GeekHack is a closed circle community with rules that stretches outside the forum.
I however dont see why both can coexist and have different agendas/target audiences. Think its fair to say that Reddit is more of a stepping stone, an introductory place for mechanical keyboard enthusiast while GeekHack is more of a high level of knowledge and experience.

Tried it many times, usually get downvoted to hell or rippy roo comes in and turns it into something petty.  Too many bought into the ripster is God and GH is the devil myths.

Reddit is a toxic place to start, rippy roo just feeds it more.

It's not that reddit is toxic.. It's just got many young people.. and they're not all there yet..

I started on Reddit and from the start was forcefed the GeekWack notion. People are severely miss led over there and its a shame because a lot of people on Reddit would fit in here very well. Then again there is a lot of people on Reddit that should stay on Reddit. I just wish Ripster would give up with his petty revenge and let people decide for themselves if Geekhack is a good site.

If you cant deal with one persons negative opinion what dose that say about you?
Ive had a ****ton of, what I think is, quality threads with good/great photos and links to both involved users, posts here and other forums that turned out with around 5 and 30 positive karma while my most sucssesful post was a ****ing Half Baked GIF about a receiving mail.

Dont buy in too much into the whole karma thing, its mostly about how hard you can jerk within popular opinion and hit your meme's

Edit: After checking your reddit account, I think you avg higher karma on your posts than I do. What are you really crying about? What ever bad reputation you think you have seem more or less purely imaginary and based of what you want to think.
You can do what I do with *******s I dont want my good mood dragged down by, use the ignore feature

I would say that there are just lots more people and the young being more active, vocal and overall more "strongly opinionated". What ever they think is right is right and everything else is just a idiots who shouldnt have the right to free speech

Wait, aren't you the guy who complained on reddit about how ****ty GH is after you were an obnoxious ****head?

If you can't handle negative opinions what do you think that says about you?

Link please? I am not good at clarifying, and I can further explain if there is confusion. I think I know what comment you are talking about, is it this one? http://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/2tkl9p/meta_announcing_new_subreddit_rtruemk/co0a33l?context=3

If not, please link it to me, because I would like to see myself complaining about GH because I was being obnoxious. I personally don't think I am obnoxious, and if you are referring to me making /r/truemk obnoxious, go ahead.

It was a while ago, but it was definitely this guy. Just look through his comment history, it shouldn't be hard to find.

I couldn't find it, I only have mentioned GH in the past month or two, and I couldn't find anything about me ****ting on GH.

I lurk reddit and here (but have resolved myself to get more involved on here)

The crap they go on with on there about GH isn't even worth worrying about. I've learned heaps here being a noob and nobody has ever been a **** to me here. I don't own any custom keycaps and haven't made any attempt to get any, and don't feel like I'm any less worthy of being here than guys with heaps and nobody here has made me feel like that way either.
