First up, later style 122 keyboard assembly [in this example 1397003 (http://www.9999hp.net/keyboard/temp/1397003.jpg) PS/2 terminal emulator] in an older style case [from a 1389260 (http://www.9999hp.net/keyboard/temp/1389260.jpg) for 3179/3180 terminals].
Fits in quite neatly.
Yes, this works quite well.

Now for the older style keyboard assembly in the newer case.
It extends over the sides, and the height is never going to work...
Sure enough, not a good fit.
But what about the 104 key case [1387033 (http://www.9999hp.net/keyboard/temp/1387033.jpg) for the 3290 terminal]? How different is it to the older 122 style?
It feels as though it would fit well if the right hand side of the 'board was "adjusted" suitably:

...and accordingly so vice-versa:

The newer style case really doesn't work with the old 104 assembly though:

If they made a 122 with a M-style arrangement of the editing block and typing zone (wide, short enter, backslash over enter, wide left shift), I'd buy it immediately. ISTR the contacts are there, but it's a "***** to do if you don't do it from before you rivet it together" problem.

I'd buy it too, and it's true that some of the contacts are there, but I think the result would be a keyboard that produces scan codes software would not recognize. So they need to do more than simply put the keys in a different place on the existing board.

Is that the one from recycledgoods?

Dare I say I've struck up a lot of forgotten interest in 122-key IBMs?
I already accused you of this. While I did get around to taking new pictures of my IBM 'boards (except those I forgot...), I might never have got around to doing this, and certainly wouldn't have posted it, if it hadn't been for your wake up call. This said, I have been aware that I've been using this 1397003 all this time, though...

Yes, it is; there was a discount and I couldn't help myself... Argecy.com still have at least one available which hopefully would not have cracks in the casing.

These guys have one for $60:

They wouldn't answer my question about condition.
Shipping was $150+ to Germany.
I'll wait for ebay.

There's a single person behind all these recycling websites.

Is that 104 key Model F or Model M style?
