Title: How do you like your popcorn?
Post by: SpAmRaY on Sat, 07 February 2015, 09:31:12
I'm not usually a big popcorn eater but when I do eat it I add a little olive oil, parmesian and garlic seasoning and Jane's krazy salt.

I cook mine old-school style on the stovetop with kernels in a large pot with oil.  Sometimes I'll add butter, salt, and pepper.  Just try to keep it simple.  Once I started making my popcorn on the stovetop, I can't go back to the microwave variety.

I cook real popcorn, too.

Sweet popcorn is disgusting.

Salt and butter only.

On a very rare occasion, maybe soy sauce and parmesan cheese.

I would say I like lots of salt and butter, but every time I have it I just feel guilty. A pinch of salt may be the best option :p

Cooked in coconut oil, plain, with popcorn salt (the kind that's so fine, it's practically aerosolized).

I used to like the popcorn sold at movie theaters but the industry ruined it.  Even without "golden topping", movie theater popcorn is just not what it used to be.  Everyone involved with the production, sale, and distribution of "golden topping" should be prosecuted.  There is only one place I know of in a 100-mile radius that puts butter on on popcorn and they have good popcorn.

Fun story.  I grew up in Valparaiso, Indiana, where Orville Redenbacher got started.  Every year the Saturday after Labor Day, we have the Popcorn Festival.  When I would travel around in younger years and tell me people about my hometown, people would give me the nickname "Popcorn."  A couple years ago, Valparaiso unveiled this statue in a downtown park:

I'm gonna go cook some popcorn right now.

what is golden topping?

A marketing term for a class of slightly viscous liquid compounds, ranging in color from yellow to orange, designed to replace butter as a popcorn topping.  Generously pumped onto popcorn at movie theaters, golden topping serves to eliminate the palatability of food and may be the true cause of the rise of autism, cancer, and AIDS in America.  I redacted the manufacturer logo on the image to protect myself from the theater industry's paramilitary goons.   /endconspiracyrant

I've never really liked popcorn.

I like the smell, but not the taste or texture.

I'm not a big popcorn fan myself. My girl is over the moon for it though. When she makes it shes uses a Whirley-pop with oil, not sure what kind though. From there its buttered up with real butter and salted with sea salt. I like plenty of salt and butter. Like, enough butter where some kernels are just soggy buttered salt bombs. You know, like those few chips in the bag that got hit like multiple times with the flavoring. I love that ****. Sometimes she puts truffle salt on hers which is something I really don't care for myself. Now between this and the pizza thread, I'm torn, but the oven is already ready so I guess my hand is forced.

Not microwaved, that's for sure. I can't stand that crap.

Stove top popped with a bit of salt, no butter, butter on popcorn is gross.

Kettle corn is also awesome but it has to be made right and most of the time it's not.

I like popcorn of all varieties.  Plain with salt is good.  So is caramel popcorn.  Here is a good recipe:  http://allrecipes.com/recipe/caramel-popcorn/

I guess the only bad kind of popcorn is stale popcorn.  Also, the store-bought bags of popcorn can be disgusting.  But anything homemade hot and fresh is always good.

Anybody who does not require popcorn to be greasy MUST buy one of these
(a $5-$10 yard sale or thrift store item in the US)
because it will give you a fresh hot bowl of popcorn for $0.10 in a couple of minutes
WITH ABSOLUTELY MINIMAL CLEANUP !

disclaimer - I require popcorn to be greasy

Best way to eat popcorn:

-Stick of butter
-Roll the stick of butter in a bowl of unpopped kernels until it is completely covered on all sides.
-Dip the kernel butter stick into a bowl of cumin, sugar, mayonnaise, light soy sauce and mustard sauce. You can also add minced garlic for tasty fun.
-Slide the kernel-saturated dairy-fat stick down your throat-hole quickly it because you'll pretty much break your teeth if you trying chewing.

Meeuum!  ;)

Sweet and Salty! I learnt to eat those when I got to the UK.
But for gourmet, I love Garrett's Macadamia Popcorn.
It's from the United States I believe but they do have it in Malaysia.
On the pricey side tho and it's a tad bit sweet.
But once in a blue moon is fine :D :D
