Title: Greetings and a list of my gear
Post by: brentaarnold on Thu, 12 February 2015, 18:23:08
Greetings, GH! Long time lurker, first time poster. After gathering infinite worth while information off of this site I figure I should join up and share some of my hardware/opinions.

The lineup (the ones worth noting):

Topre Realforce 87u 55g / Topre Realforce 23u (Both have the red Topre Esc key)
IBM Model M SSK (1397681 / Year 1991 / Bolt-modded / Unused / RGB modifiers from Unicomp)
IBM Model M (1391401 - Year 1991 / Bolt-modded / Unused)
Filco Majestouch 2 Ninja TKL (MX Cherry Reds / WASD Red O-rings)
SteelSeries 7G (MX Cherry Blacks / MaxKeyboard Universal Front-printed Keycaps)
Razer Blackwidow Ultimate 2013

the last two don't count ;) but you have even more? very impressive for a first time poster. i suggest you sell a couple to make room for an eventual endgame board, be it a korean kustom or HHKB

happy posting!

Hahaha, I knew I was going to catch flak for the last two! You'll have to pry my Topre from my cold, dead hands! The SSK I'm going to put on my retro Linux box. The Filco, obviously, I use on my gaming rig. I guess i could come off of the 1391401, but it's unused in the box, bolt-modded and all. Hate to part with it.

steelseries aren't that bad, i enjoyed typing on my friend's 6gv2 with blacks. i hate the massive handrest on the 7g though, makes it too clunky. i don't find the need to have multiple switches, but different folks different strokes etc. there's massive Gateron hype going on right now, the few who have tested it say it's way better than even the best Cherry MX switches. something for you to try in the future perhaps :)

Why is a HHKB the end game?  I understand that the topre switches are nice, but the layout certainly isn't for everyone and definitely couldn't be your only keyboard if you did anything with a numpad.

60% = Best layout
HHKB= Improved 60% layout
Topre = Really really nice, especially 55g
HHKB = Someones endgame... demik...

No choice!  One keyboard!  That's it!  Endgame?  I don't agree.

HHKB isn't for me, but then again I'm not a programmer, I'm a sysadmin. IMO, HHKB is a board you have to dedicate your entire computing existence to. It's a board you have to use every day, in every situation. If you don't you won't retain all of the proprietary button combinations required to have a fully functioning layout.

What?  I really hesitate to reply to this.  If you say so.

This is exactly how I feel about 60% boards. As the sole IT staffer for a small nonprofit (Staff of ~12), I spend about 30%-40% of my typing time on someone else's keyboard. Although, the rest is pretty evenly-divided between my desktop and laptop (a Chromebook Pixel) and I do OK switching between those two. I think we might be better at localizing our muscle memory than we realize.

Welcome to Geekhack!

A nice variety of keyboards you have.  Especially the RF 87U and the SSK, both of which are on my very short list of keyboards I would like to own.

And ignore those saying you should think about selling some of your precious - KEEP THEM ALL!  Swap them around from time to time, and just enjoy them!
