Title: Project "Board Chow"
Post by: clickclack on Fri, 21 August 2009, 03:37:33
Hi everyone!
I have been lurking a for a little while now and figured I should probably join, so... TaaaDaaa! here I am =)
I have been working on a project for the past couple of months and in doing so I have come across many, many, many, and many keyboards. So I thought I would share them here as well as my experiences with them. At the moment I think I have a bit over 250 keyboards, (in one form or another) of which I would say 40 or so are the "mechanical" type.
I didn't know much about them when I started (and in many ways I still don't) but this site has really got me hooked!

In fact I was so excited to join, i decided to do a quick sketch for my avatar!
Do forgive my lack of pics in the post as(I will get to those soon) I am not terribly computer savy and my cintiq is crying because my two crappy computers are dying faster than I can type this =(

250 keyboards but no well-working motherboards? Oops. Mind posting what kind of mo/bos and power supplies you're using? Usually those are the trouble spots (especially certain vintages), provided the harddrive doesn't crap out of course...

I think it has less to do with the condition the components are in and more to do with the age and demands put on them. Both of my computers are about 8yrs old. And things get updated about as frequently as elections. I dont even have USB 2.0! My camera uploads move on a geologic timeframe. I seem to know enough to do email, reaserch/browsing, photography, and illustration. And many times that suprises me!

But back to your request, I have no idea what mo/bos (mother boards?) or power supplies I am using. I just know they are old, slow, and at best outdated.

I really appreciate your generosity, and I hope my "current" ignorance isn't too terribly off putting.

Thanks

I had a ton of fun making it! Mr. clickclack types at "ALL words per minute". And because of this he goes through many a keyboard! haahaa

I am currently using an-
IBM model M 1391401 (1991 grey logo with black letters?)
and a bran spankin new Dell AT101W.
these are set up on two different computers.
And they replace an HP keyboard (that I am currently dying the keycaps on) and a Dell quiet key keyboard that is really, really loud for a rubber dome, despite its name (that I am also currently dying the keycaps on)

I have two more AT101W's that are also NIB. And I have 3 more IBM model M's with blue labels.

I have an old Apple Extended keyboard II for my old Machintosh IICi that I always loved and only recently realized what mechanical switches were and that I had been using one for years! =D I always wondered why I like it so much. But I stopped using that computer 6 or so years ago. But I still have everything but the monitor and speakers.

The AEKII uses cream colored ALPS switches, which use rubber dampers to lighten the sound. These switches are kind of rare and were only used in the AEKII and the SGI version of the AT101 board. Anyway.. you can actually get the AEKII to work on modern Macs (or PCs!) with the help of a Griffin iMate, which converts ADB to USB. Sadly these have gotten quite rare and only pop up on eBay every now and then.

Nope, I take that back, I am going to take that compliment and run with it!
clickclack tatoo anyone? I would give ya a bunch of keyboards! haahaa

WOW! I didn't know I could use it on PC's, thats great! I have about 5-7 more and one where I just keep the metal plate and switches so I could have a keyboard to do my layout tests on. I will upload a pic of that hopefully soon. I should check each keyboard to see what color the ALPS switches are. The two I first looked at (mine and the first recent one I recieved) seemed to have a more white plastic stem color... lemme check....*runs to the other room* I just checked the stem color and they are a bit more "off white" (cream I suppose)than white when compared to other ALPS switches I have. They are quit quiet compared to other white ALPS switches I have tested.

I am a materials person (not "material") and in model making I am always on the look out for stuff I can either use for kit bashing or for textural elements. I also do a bunch of massing models for theme parks and other architectural environments. And simple repetitive geometric objects can make my life easier much of the time and a bit interesting (in an ironic way). I am also a sculptor and I will be using many of the keyboard components for that as well.

I am currently not buying them, although I was going to go that route as I can get large lots of keyboards off Ebay. The prices may be high initially but in relative terms very worth it! (but the lack of mechanical keyboards and the lack of variety steered me clear) I am currently getting them donated from multiple anonymous sources. I would say some or many dont work, but I have no way of testing a majority of them.

I have taken apart over 200 of them so far but I must say there is enough of a variety to keep things really interesting!
I have seen really interesting switches, rubber domes, membranes, metal plates, keycaps, springs, screws, circuit boards, leds, smells, and lint! Enough to make you sick and happy all at the same time =P

Bingo. Don't be too surprised if you pop 'em open and find faulty electrolytic capacitors on the board. (And no, it's probably cheaper to get another board than to replace the caps, unless you already have a fancy soldering station.) The power supplies might also be finished if used a lot, especially if there are no other exhaust fans and they have been allowed to accumulate dust (the one in my main comp is cleaned out with a big brush about once a year - and yes, it should be disconnected from mains for quite a while for that, plus some caution can't hurt in any case).

Identifying things isn't too hard, for the board you might use good ol' Lavalys Everest (Windows) and for the power supply it only takes a boring screwdriver even you didn't bother to save the receipt.

Nor do I. I'm still completely on BX boards and even older stuff (http://stephan.win31.de/686kdx.htm) (the latter is mainly for fun, of course). Having good-quality components and a reasonably new / fast harddrive helps though.

I'm missing xsplat and his typewriter posts. It will be interesting to see what clickclack does with all of those boards he is taking apart.

I implemented a:focus as white text on focus a few months back. Works in ie678, firefox, safari/chrome. Opera doesn't seem to have a link tabbing feature

Well, I've been dealing with these things for a few years (actually part of th reason why I started electrical engineering was frustration about not understanding even basic electric circuitry, something handy when you're a radio nut). In return, my art skills are lousy - don't be surprised if you find ASCII art illustrations on my pages. Domesticating Inkscape is still a work in progress...

I have tried the music thing and I must say it takes far more dedication than I am ever willing to give it =P
Although I must admit I would kill to be able to play the Viola!

Thanks for the offer, I really appreciate it!
Atm my "main" compy problems stem from everything being so, so, so, incredibly slow that I cant really get anything done. Or it takes so long that it just ends up crashing (or might as well)
All of my computer stuff is just way, way out dated, with the sole exception of my Cintiq. Which is really sad since i can hardly use it due to the lack of newer and better components. But most of my time right now is spent dealing with my current poor health and obnoxious medical bills. So a new set up will just have to wait ( I have already been waiting for years)

some pics are coming up soon...
It has taken me 3 hours to upload...:puke:

Haaahaaa! SURPRISE!!! thats classic
honestly it would be a bad way to go, first you would be crushed, but more importantly you would have a never ending down pour of board chow...eewww.

here is another pic-
this is a pic of an Apple II? keyboard and it is really fun to mash around on. The keys have a very lovely tone and solid. There is this really funny droning metalic sound very space alien like (thats what my girlfriend said and I would have to agree). The keys are silly thick and the board is very, very, small in foot print but it is by far the tallest (thick) keyboard I have yet to use. I think this is my first experience with a "linear" switch. There is no click and the force seems to remain the same through the whole stroke. I have a key from an average rubber dome keyboard to compare thickness of keys.

Oh, and it seems like you could use a big pack of those denture cleaning tabs (see recent thread). And a good bit of dishwashing liquid.

That's quite the collection. In the second batch, I spotted:
  • 2 MS Naturals (the cleaner one is older) - OK, that was easy
  • 1 Acer KB101(/A/B), the one on the left with the 4 LEDs; this should have either real Alps switches or clicky Acer lookalikes (if the keycaps come off reasonably easily by hand it's probably the latter, on Alps switches the caps tend to cling on for dear life so in some cases you might rather rip off the switch than the cap)
quite possible, but again I would have to check
  • 2 Packard Bell (BTC inside) rubber domes like my old one, they're quite nice
yup most of the Packard Bells feel pretty decent
  • 1 OEM Cherry MX11800 (does this one also have browns?)
I am not too sure there is a Cherry in the group, I don't think as of yet I have encountered a Cherry brown either
  • 1 craptacular Logitech Internet Navigator (yay)
Logitech seem to have the most variation in mountings, membranes, and rubber domes
  • Some Focus board I think? (the one with the yellowed keys)
  • That Model M lookalike with L-shaped Enter could be a Mitsumi, Silitek or somesuch
I think Mitsumi. The really interesting thing about model M lookalikes is that even the insides look like a model M just with rubber domes. Some with curved metal plates and some with curved plastic ones
  • I think these IBM rubber domes are some of the better ones.
Most of the IBM boards look and feel really nice (when compared to "most" other rubber domes
  • The two boards on the lower right seem to be some Apples ones, but apparently no Extended IIs, that one is at the top left
Yup they are Apple Design keyboards. And the uppper left one is an Extended II. Which I now must have 15+ of by now!!!

  • The board with the very white keys and slightly yellowed case near the top right could be a mechanical... Monterey or something.
again  would have to check
[/list]
What's the right Gateway board like? It looks interesting at least, and I spooted one on the 'bay recently.
think there are a couple Gateways in their. Most Gateways that are a normal layout feel decent enough (maybe better than most) but the ergonomic ones tend to feel like icky mush and poor travel

Oh, and it seems like you could use a big pack of those denture cleaning tabs (see recent thread). And a good bit of dishwashing liquid.
You truly have no idea :( I usually wipe em down first with alcohol and then after being disassembled I give them a soak in Comet. It does a great job and if you rinse them fully no real residue remains. But on my project the get a final alcohol wipe and the are gorgeous! Bran spankin new looking

The old Apple board is nice. Looks like it has old Alps switches (http://www7.ocn.ne.jp/~hisao/jiku.htm). Too bad the numpad Enter is b0rked.
Yeah that thing reminds me of my early childhood in school.

Correct! They are kinda interesting. The rubber domes are usually separated and either stuck on the underside of two piece key stems ore silicone mounted to the membrane (but still separated, not in sheets) And They tend to be a very lovely green. You will see pics of that later.

I just got yet another donation today and there looks to be A TON (proportionaly) of mechanical Alps stuff. Mostly Dell AT101W's MUUUUAHAHAHAHAHAAHAAAAA!!!

I get a ton of metal plates from taking the rubber domed keyboards apart, most of them have them. And they tend to be as unique as the keyboards the come from. Some (just like many other things) seem to change greatly even among the same model!

This next pics is of one of the few buckling spring donations that I have recieved. It has a very interesting layout and feels wonderful. It seems a little lighter than a Model M. Somewhere in between a model F and M. It came that way too, with the top case off and the bottom case missing (looks like someone was trying to fix it or hack it.

I have no clue as to why this post rearranged itself, sorry :S

That mystery board would have to be from some kind of terminal, but then which one came with an AT-style L-shaped Enter?

The MX11800 was easy to spot btw - it's the one with the touchpad. It might only happen that it has blacks rather than browns (the Compaq was a custom order).

That mysterious BS 'board is from an IBM wheelwriter or some other after-Selectric typewriter.

That's a Cherry MX11900 (or G80-11900) with the touchpad: http://www.cherrycorp.com/english/keyboards/Industrial/11900/index.htm - I think it's only been produced with black switches.

As far as I know the MX11800 was the variant with brown switches and the trackball in place of the touchpad, no Win keys and was only sold under the Compaq label.

Oh, I getcha! My memory must be crap cuz I am almost positive that all the keyboards that I have recieved with a touchpad have all been rubber domes.

Awesome! It's so similar to a model M in construciton! I should have taken a pic of the front cover...hmmm maybe I did. Either way the front cae did look much like the front case on the photo! neato!

I guess I should have given the keys a closer look - line space, paper up, paper down...

OK, so I got MX11800 and MX11900 mixed up it seems. Oh well.

Not like I'd be curious or anything, but how does one get into the position to receive keyboard donations?

EDIT: That Extended II with the funky keycaps was intended for video editing. We had a G83-6105 like that here recently, though that only said "Lift" on said key.

The old Apple board is nice. Looks like it has old Alps switches (http://www7.ocn.ne.jp/~hisao/jiku.htm). Too bad the numpad Enter is b0rked.

I forgot to thank you for that link!!!! That was great! I can't read any of it, but i am more of the visual type anyway :P

I have a few switches that I don't think are on that page. Let me upload one now. This one had two different types! I think I have 2-4 of these boards.

I also have a board that has switches that look like a medieval cross between a cherry and an alps! I can't wait to show it, its so badass!

:pound:
Hahaaaaa! I can't believe you said that! I wanted to post how they remind me of that old video game "space invaders" and the like.

I like them, they have a nice feel that is very distinct, yet not obtrusive. It has a very lovely muted sound if you type nicely (if you don't type like Mr. clickclack)

I think the spring actually buckles a tiny bit, and you have to slide between the two claw like contacts which give an additional feel. It's a really cool switch!

I was able to pull out some of the mechanical boards last night with the help of my girl. YAY! So I will be posting a pic with numbers on them and if you guys have questions about them just refer  to the number (or system for locating the numbers) and I will be more than happy to look up the board amongst the stack!

I found that one medeival switch I was talking about and a type of ALPS switch that is just pure heaven to type on!. I have also noticed a huge variation of white ALPS switches! They all feel so different yet all so good...
I am so addicted!

Many, many more pics to come =)

So last night after uploading that B&W pic, my computer seemed to have crapped out.

I am using my gf's computer right now at her place. It works for about 3 minutes then freezes or wont do anything. And is only if it works at all after being turned on.

I am guessing when you are in the middle of doing something and the computer shuts off all by itself and reboots, that's a bad  thing?  :(
When it came back on it said there was a critical error. And my  Trend Micro said it reverted back to it's last stable point, and I should check to see if my computer is still unstable.

I know i am probably screwed but should my main priority be backing up everything (on to an external) when I can get it to work for brief moments?

could also be overheating. run it with the case open and fans pointed at it. use compressed air to clean out cooling components.

if it's a laptop, kick it to the curb and remember this next time you are tempted to own a laptop. own only desktops, ever.

Could be a power supply issue.  They are notorious for causing random shutdowns.  Other idea is to unplug everything.  I had a Das Keyboard once that would do this.

Power supplies should be considered the most important part of a computer, as they can influence the outcome of all of the rest of the components.

I figure its not a power supply issue, only because it happened twice doing the same thing. It was when I opened windows media player. So I got rid of the file in the program and now it doesn't randomly shut off after it opens. But the computer only works for about 2-3 minutes after going online, If it works at all doing anything :( It then  has to be shut off by holding the power button.

- i hate scissor switches and reduced layouts
- i can't use touchpads
- all laptops are of low build quality. A-L-L ALL.

When did you buy those dells?  They have improved a  LOT over the last few years.  My friend got a dell a few months ago and I almost hit him, lol.  But then I actually used the thing and it was much more well built than I expected.  Very solid laptop!

Do Dells still come in two flavours - home use (crap parts, lousy support) and professional use (decent build and good support)?

Laptops are always a gamble. Not really user-servicable, and one failed component can put it beyond economic repair.

This is the most important part.  When I give advice on computers, I stress this to no end. I tell them that if they are just going to use the thing around the house, get a desktop; only buy one if they need to travel with it ("but I want to sit on the couch and play games...").  The only reason I have one is I need one for work, and my company bought it.  I would not have bought one myself.

Well....*crosses fingers*.... my computer seems to work-ish atm. I took a vacum cleaner and sucked out the two fans in the back (a ton of dust guck) was in there, and when I turned on the compuer I noticed the exhaust fan was not moving or making any of those odd sounds I was accustomed to!
So I used the back of a paint brush and used it as a "chicken stick" and the fan started moving!!!!! Yipeeeee! Maybe my computer WAS overheating?

In any event now my computer sits backwards with the fans next to my head and if I hear or see the fan stop I will "chicken stick" it again =P
Ghetto FTW!

I hope this works long enough for me to get another computer.

I want to thank everyone for all the advice and trouble shooting! I really appreciate it, and there are some exceptionally generous people on this forum!
I can't thank you all enough!

The blue (ALPS?) one does not have any info on the outside but an FCC ID no. and a S/N number. ( I can look inside the case later to see if anything is listed there ) It feels wonderful to type on but you have to hit it a bit more dead center or it requires just a teeny, tiny bit more force. oh, and it seems to be a relatively light switch. I can use some nickles and a yen piece to find out later the actual dead weight release.

It is #31 in the pic btw
FCC ID no. HQK RB-2001
S/N 91052361

Here is the info for that one (its #30 in the pic above)

FCC ID: F2Q4NEKB 6000M
QTRONIX
Model # KB-6000M
S/N K032954

I looked at your link but it was very difficult to tell (all garbled text) so I just did a page search for Mitsumi. Of the switches I saw none of them were exactly like the one in my pic. If you combined a couple of the ones provided in your link they would be somewhat similar.

I like the switch it is very light, hardly a tactile bump (not really) and very quiet. The switch mechanism is somewhat loose and key wobble is similar to a rubber dome.

I have two model F's from what I can tell, #'s 35 and 34 in the pic.
I dont know what AT is. If it has to do with the cord, both cords are cut and both have a thick black stub of a cord left hanging out.

The number 34 (in the pic) model F is significantly lighter to the touch than the #35 model F, and feels wonderful to type on. I even did a "ripometer" on them and on average one is 10-20g lighter than the other one!

If you go to page 4 in this thread you will see a pic of number 10.

#34 is a Model F XT, you'll need a signal converter to use it with a modern PC.

#35 is AT, so you just need a very cheap AT->PS/2 adapter...once you've found a working cable :)

I'm pretty sure that's not an Alps switch. It could be made by KPT, ages ago lowpoly posted a review of a board with switches that looked similar to that one: http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Island:4402

Unfortunately the images of the switch do not show up now but Google cache helped resurrect the thumbnail:

That's a rather big gap between them, although the ripometer method isnt completely accurate with BS's - they tend to give different results everytime you try them.

The AT (the one with lock lights), as has been pointed out, is compatible with modern PCs. You could probably make a cable for it using the cable from another keyboard like an AT101W. I'm not entirely sure what the pin-out for the controller is though.

The number 34 (in the pic) model F is significantly lighter to the touch than the #35 model F, and feels wonderful to type on. I even did a "ripometer" on them and on average one is 10-20g lighter than the other one!

If you go to page 4 in this thread you will see a pic of number 10.
enjoy :)

You really need to get a working cable for the F.
By the way, when referencing, use post number instead of page. The page a certain post is on depends on the number of posts per page, which can be changed quite easily in the preferences.

Hypothetically, couldn't one just splice the XT connector with the AT Model F, and match the pinout?

His XT one is missing it too.

As I said though, should be easy enough to make one from the cable of just about any other keyboard, as long as you can figure out the pinout on the Berg connector on the keyboard's controller board.

Usually, the wires are colour coded to facilitate such tasks.
Even if they aren't, you can't really do wrong. GND should be fairly self-explanatory, as is VCC. Then you'll just need to figure out where each of the two data lines goes, but if you mess up, the keyboard will just not work, so you can swap the data lines and try again.

I killed a usb to ps2 converter by connecting VCC to one of the data lines. Was the usb side though.

Did a similar thing when I was rewiring my Model F and put the connector on the wrong pins. Worked fine when I put it on the right way.

Oddly enough, they have five wires running to the keyboard controller even though only four are used. That's IBM's trademark over-engineering for you.

#34 is a Model F XT, you'll need a signal converter to use it with a modern PC.

Bummer cuz that one is truly wonderful to type on! The board is probably dead for all I know though.

#35 is AT, so you just need a very cheap AT->PS/2 adapter...once you've found a working cable :)
http://www.clickykeyboards.com/index.cfm/fa/categories.main/parentcat/9934

And bummer again because that one isn't really all that much fun to type on.

Thanks for all that info though! That's great to know what they are and what they would need should I choose to resurect...heehee

I'm pretty sure that's not an Alps switch. It could be made by KPT, ages ago lowpoly posted a review of a board with switches that looked similar to that one:

Sure looks similar, minus the indications on the switch and the color, the color seems close though (even taking into consideration luminance, WB, and the color channel clipping older sensors tend to exhibit)

It is a wonderful switch though!

That's a rather big gap between them, although the ripometer method isnt completely accurate with BS's - they tend to give different results everytime you try them.
It seemed pretty accurate to me though. Within reason of course. The differences seemed to be between keys on the same board. An example would be the "A" key verses the "K" key. They are different but consistently. When I just to the other board similar differences between keys were noted but were consistent as well.

The AT (the one with lock lights), as has been pointed out, is compatible with modern PCs. You could probably make a cable for it using the cable from another keyboard like an AT101W. I'm not entirely sure what the pin-out for the controller is though.

I would really like to put a cable on some of these, but since the colors of wires are different and I dont the know how to figure out what is what on the board (with the exception of the ground) its kinda a moot point :(

Many are color coded but they still dont seem to match up. Either they are different colors, more wires or slightly different colors coming from different places. I would realy like to experiment but I really am spooked about the idea of damaging anything. Also my computer is dying at the moment and messing with it seems a bit counter productive, and potentially very upsetting :(

Sell it in the marketplace, there's a pretty good demand for those AT boards, although if there's a huge typing difference, there is a possibility that there is something wrong with it, or it's horribly worn out. When you say it's not fun to type on, is there any difference to the XT model's feel other than just resistance? If it's a case that the springs are worn out, you could do a spring swap. Much easier than wiring up an XT conversion adaptor.

Check out the schematic for the AT keyboard on this page. (http://www.kbdbabel.org/schematic/index.html) From their description -

Red - Clock
Brown - Data
Black - Ground
White - 5V
Green - Unused

The pins for the data connector are the ones at the bottom of that picture. From what I can see in my picture of my somewhat messy wiring up top (starting from the bottom-most, and going up) -

[1]

Where -
1. White
2. Brown
3. Black
4. Red
5. Green
x. The pin that isn't there (for keying of the connector)
#. Unused pins

Here's the corresponding pinout for the plug -

The XTs are meant to be pretty much the same, but of a sturdier standard of construction, the actual keyswitch is identical across all models of Model F and Model C.

I still need it for my project, but I have thought about selling/giving certain things to people (it's something I will have to consider further).

When I opened both of them up, they were a bit different and the key housings were constructed differently as well. Maybe I will post some pics later. The XT (the one with the crap layout) has just the most beautiful typing sensation, slightly softer and very clicky. The AT one was in great shape too but the key presses were much stiffer, even more stiff than all four of my model M's. A spring swap wouldn't be a bad Idea, I could do a few to see if it is indeed the spring or not (if I even get them to work...heehee).

A big thanks to ya for giving me all that info :thumb:(pics and diagrams) and as soon as my head stops hurting from looking at it, maybe I could do something with it.

It is rather nice (fine I admit it...heehe =P) but it was about 5-10g stiffer than my M and 10-20g stiffer than the other model F (XT). And I think the XT version doesnt use as many stabalizers for the slightly bigger keys and those feel great as well (if I am wrong dont kill me I am going off of my weak memory)

Quote from: ch_123;112140

The case is nicer I think on the XT and feels a tiny bit more robust, but considerably more simple in construction.(I like it) The AT case is more refined.

The springs are the same size it seems and the same diameter (although I did not use my calipers or micrometer) the bigger difference that I have noticed is that each key housing on the XT is seperate as opposed to the single plastic plate key housing of the AT. And the hammer (plastic foot?) fits the springs slighly different. The AT the spring can be lightly pulled of easily with your fingers without damage. The XT spring needs to be torn off within an inch of your life! (or just use and exacto blade and pop em off without damage)
maybe that is enough to contribute to the difference outside spring tension (higher/lower rating or just worn)

WORD TO THE WISE-
if your girlfriend says toss me that keyboard, dont throw her the model F!!!
I am such an A$$h0l3  I so wasn't thinking FTL

And there's definitely something up with the springs on your AT model, you're the only person around here who has one that is noticably different to an XT model AND is stiffer than the Model M.

I got some really interesting boards recently. I will post pics when my computer is either acting up less or I have a new one.

One was a AEII with a different type of ALPS?
So far I have seen 3 different types of ALPS switches in my AEII's but I have heard of yet one more.
white, off white, cream(i dont think I have any of those), and a different white ALPS type stem.

I also just got a keyboard that looks almost identical to an AEII, but is a tad thicker and has insanely clicky and tactile white ALPS. It is damn nice to type on too!

So this all just means that the number in my sig grew again :)

It's that long for two reasons-
first, I will hopefully have a better computer situation by that time. (that matters because this is a real pain to do with a computer that is crappin out every 2 seconds). Second I wanted to give ample time for people to guess, and that makes it more fun. (well...at least for me anyways :)

No worries, I will do what I can :)
Off hand though I can't say, I will try and look it up tomorrow when I am working on the boards. It is indeed interesting, someone might beat me to identifying it. But I will do my best.
:)

EDIT:
ya know, that board looks really familiar atm, I think I just dismantled that one the other day...hmmm it might be going into a project right now. If that is indeed the case then I think it will be a week or so till I can get the specs for it. We shall see, I will keep my fingers crossed that I can find info on it :)

So I was taking apart this particular board and noticed that it had very interesting double shot keys and very simple stems. The keys were easy to pull off yet stable and well/solidly put together.

I also noticed the odd key shaft, a bit of a dramatic design doncha think? haahaa
Then I opened er up, and there were two curved metal plates! They sandwiched the independant key shaft housings, wicked overkill! (but really cool)
The rubber domes were small (hard to tell in the pictures) and were actually held in place not by adhesive but the were actually partially popped through the plastic sheet.
It was a really nice board to type on (for a rubber dome)

Well I got more keyboards the other day (not including the ones pictured below, so I guess my sig will be changing again soon =)

So Here is a recent group of keyboards I received, and what did I see???
A MODEL M!!! YAY I was wondering when I would just happen to get one. I own 4 atm that are working, but I was still expecting to see one sooner or later since I see model F's here and there. There was also 3, yup 3, model F boards in there!!! They are of the XT variety and feel really good except one that is stiffer (similar to AT version)

This is a neato keyboard that I found amongst that last grouping (you can see it at the bottom of the 1st pic)
It is actually smaller than my wallet!!! Well that's not really a fair comparison, since my wallet is of silly epic proportions (unfortunately not due to an over abundance of cash).
The keyboard was decent, better than some full sized keyboards but the typing experienced varied considerably when put on different surfaces!

Djeez, where did you find all those F XT's?

I guess I'll have to dig in some dumpsters around here if I ever want to find a second one for free...

Also, if you are talking about stiffer, try some of the less frequently used keys and compare those. With a keyboard of the F's age, I wouldn't be surprised if most of the springs in the typing area are worn out.

You mean PDT, right?

I suppose I do :)
(I do hate all this PST, PT, PDT, EST, EDT, ET it's all a PITA!)
The odd thing is if you say PT you avoid the PST and PDT thing because one is only refering to the local and not the particular observance.

The actual number was 6968, from 67 keyboards!

Lots of great guesses though!

PM sent out! =)

Thanks to everyone who participated, I am really glad and surprised we got over 20 guesses...well for the most part ;) hahaa.

The prize....
A special one off Esc Key compatible with either a Cherry, ALPS, or Buckling spring (model m) type board.

I was curious what would be the first response after that, I was just about to give up and post the real winner. Luckily though you posted just in time! haahaa

I was actually hiding behind the model F boards so I was safe anyway ;)

I just based my guess on the number of keys in a bag containing several keyboards worth of keys when I was doing a batch cleaning a while back, surprised it came that close. Looks my brown cherry Filco will be getting a new esc key.  Thanks clickclack :D

Irradiation however severe could not rid the discoloring of some of the boards I have!

So what did I win from the guess the keys contest?

An awesome custom sculpted keycap courtesy of clickclack :hail:

Looks great on my Filco :thumb:

The cap itself is quite high quality, nicely textured plastic unlike the cheapo plastic of the red Filco key that came with the board.

This will probably find its way onto my n52 when I get around to attempting Ripster's mod.

Thanks a bunch clickclack!

That's awesome.
Might be even more appropriate for the evil CapsLock key - it could have glowing eyes.

I have found some interesting chemical stains though (not just yellowing) that when scratched at and dug out were still there! YIKES! haahaa

You are very welcome, and thank you for the kind words :)

The keycap has no coating and is dyed/pigmented throughout, so the color wont wear away even if scratched. I also have a variety of other colors I can use and create. I am also working on other sculpts and even plain keycaps that are colored. I am having fun at the moment with some ideas while working on other things but if interest continues who knows...

thanks :)   (your avatar wigs me out btw! haahaa)
I actually am working on a key that when used in with a deck board (backlit cherry boards) the eyes would lite up! But I must admit that it has been a pain to make, so I might not pursue it further.

I believe I am able to manufacture these things (custum key sculpts "skull caps") for a variety of keys cap types. BS (key cap single and dual piece) Cherry, ALPS, rubber dome (more of a pain since there are so many), Topre (if I can get a key cap for their boards as a reference)....

I will hopefully post some pics soon (more computer problems... as in- I am borrowing a computer atm)

I have some pics of the "Skull Caps" finally. These are pics of the same one I sent out as the prize. :)
I have a bunch more concepts and ideas but I am still testing many of them, so in the mean time I am just gathering more of this particular Skull Caps prototype.

Nice red.  I hear he pricks his finger and colors it with blood.
When he dies part of his soul will be in the keyboard. I think Harry Potter fans call it a Horcrux.

Just hit my "over 600" mark for sorting the keybaords. I have a bunch more, but that is all I have sorted thus far....PHEEEWWW! (wipes bead of sweat from forehead)

To celebrate I think I will have another contest with a prize to be had, hmmmm... which pics will I use for this one...?

I think i will show the keys this time (not that it would be any easier to guess...MUUUAHAHAAAA...).

I will probably start a new thread for it though.

You mentioned that you are having computer trouble. If you happen to live in San Diego, I would be willing trade you a good computer for a few keyboards.
