Title: KUL ES-87 Question
Post by: aref on Sun, 15 February 2015, 17:14:03
GH, if you have a KUL ES-87, does your KB 'ping' like CMQFR and Filco M2 keyboards? I've no experience with KUL KBs, so I thought I'd ask GH. I've owned many CMQFRs and Filcos; and have had to dampen all of them with shelf liner to diminish the annoying 'ping' sound. Thanks.

I had ping on my Filco, no ping to speak of on my KUL.

My QFR has no ping either. Which keys are you talking about?

Do you mean key switches on a KUL? If so, still can't get away from having one MX Black keyboard. I like firmer key switches. The CMQFR and Filcos I had in Red/Brown/Blue/Black; and with the exception of the MX Red boards, all of them pinged.

Ah, yep I was just wondering which keys in the case of your KUL.
My MX red Filco had distinct and annoying ping on the backspace and shift keys (usually on the upstroke).
My MX red KUL doesn't seem to have this problem.
The QFR is an MX blue with no pings on any of the stabilizer keys.

Mostly the Costar stabilized keys that pinged. I'm grateful KUL has Cherry stabilizers.

Oh! my mistake. I read that you had a KUL kb with this problem ;D

Yep! no pings at all on the KUL, at least in my experience. Seems to be more of a Costar problem to me.

I can understand your inferring this from what I wrote--my apology. I should have stated this more clearly. Looks like I'm going to add a KUL!

Thank you for your feedback--greatly appreciated.

I have a KUL with clears. It doesn't make any weird pinging sounds.

Thanks for the feedback on your KUL keyboard.

No ping here.

Squeaks a bit though.

Perhaps a bit of lube might remove the squeak. Do some of the switches squeak when struck or is it in the body of the keyboard's case? I ordered on with MX Black switches. I've a preference for heavier switches.

I've got one with reds, and no ping to speak of- but then it's my first mechanical, so what do I know. I will say that the cherry stabilizers are stiffer than I'd like- I definitely preferred the ones on the Novatouch I bought (I returned it and jumped in the Massdrop for an ES108 Pro w/ 35g switches). When said board shows up, I will discover what life is like with costars- but as far as the KUL goes, not something to worry about (afaik).

I had a WASD CODE with clears that pinged like crazy. My MX green QFR also does it but only slightly; the click sound probably masks a lot of it. My WASD v2 with browns, which is basically a CODE without the backlight, doesn't do it at all.

I'd love to try clears again and just might order a KUL once they come back in stock.

On my former CMQFRs and Filcos, the pinging was even more annoying when I used the Costar stabilized keys; I have a Corsair K65 with Cherry stabilizers, and they are dead silent. I've come to prefer Cherry's simple stabilization over Costar's metal bars.
