Title: Topre for photoshop / HHKB?
Post by: golliwog on Mon, 16 February 2015, 20:30:31
Hi all,
I'm a pretty decent touch typist but through use of various editing programs (mainly PS) I'm finding myself glancing at the legends quite a bit, which is a pain on my black 87U as I can't see anything. I've got a few options here

1. Get a set of blue keycaps for my 87U - expensive but pretty.
2. Get a white 87U - I hate the white/grey one however and the all white EK version is very rare.
3. Get a white /grey HHKB - seems to be a different blueish grey that i don't mind.

Im just wondering if anyone uses a HHKB with PS and was able to adjust to the lack of dedicated FN / ARROW keys. Also - how is the HHKB build compared to my real force? Should I get the silent or non - silent for feel?

Cheers,

Alex

The problem here is.. You're not a touch typist at all, and you constantly look at the legends.....
Your first sentence is very misleading. Because if you were a touch typist, you wouldn't have this issue to begin with.

I actually like it more for Photoshop since Control is right there.

I don't know about that. I'm a very good at touch typing and never have to reference the legends...unless I'm typing in complex passwords then it is not uncommon for me to have a glance. Even a great typist may like to confirm things once and a while. No harm in that.

I do not have a HHKB (yet) but I do have a 60% and use PS. I do not have any complaints.

Im not the best in the world but when you're constantly putting in key combinations requiring you to move your hands off the home row it can get a bit confusing - at least for me.

How does everyone feel about the build of the HHKB vs my realforce? I don't mind if its not as heavy i just want it to be durable. Also key feel? silent vs non silent?

I know i could probably search a few threads and get an idea but if someone can give me an all consuming answer id be appreciative.

The HHKB feels and is lighter than a Realforce, not only due to the size difference but also due to the former's plastic plate versus the latter's metal. That being said, the overall quality between the two is largely the same. They're both incredibly solid. From a typing perspective, I prefer the feel of the HHKB, particularly the Type-S, over the Realforce.

I'm not sure how the HHKB would be for Photoshop use, but a good compromise might be to seek a Leopold FC660C since it has dedicated arrow and other keys, plus you can use a dip switch to swap caps lock with control.

For straight typing, which is my primary use, the HHKB is awesome.

You're not really typing much in Photoshop, so if it was me I'd go with a keyboard with the most flexibility. A full set of F keys is helpful because you can map actions to them.

i work in vfx. and i have 2 kbds rosewill(now dead) with reds and filco with modded clears to 45g. i honestly have to admit that i much prefer the reds. the linear action really makes for a pleasant photoshop experience. the tactile nature of the clears is nice for typing but i find it gets in the way for any kind of 2d/3d work. as for using topre, i would imagine it is quite similar to the clears. one of my co workers has an hhkb.. i personally dont dig the switch.

I'm using a Realforce HiPro as my primary vector art editing and CGI modelling board. Really like it for that, but then I'm as big fan of sphericals. I've done some light AutoHottkey modding on it too add media key functions too, making it a great general purpose board for work and gaming. Very easy board to live with.

Before I sold my HKKB I really liked it for photoshop because of the control placement. The build wasn't great, which is why I sold it, but many people are willing to look past that.
