Title: MX/Topre switch idea.
Post by: Bromono on Fri, 20 February 2015, 08:25:11
Here is my idea..

A novatouch costs about $176. People really want the Topre\mx compatible switch heads. There are 87 keys on the board. What if someone took the switches out and sold them at a premium. I would only want 2-4 of them my self. One for a couple of keys I would like to put artisan caps or GMK caps. Would $5 a switch be to steep?

It might be slow-selling, but I bet you could do it and make some profit off of it. Worst case you end up with a Novatouch.

Is the mounting point the only change to the switch stem?

EDIT: Nvm I looked it up and they are supposedly interchangeable. Seems like a pretty good idea to me...

Plus I don't know if anyone is interested in the domes or springs as well. I primarily just want to do it so I can use my MX Clack on my hhkb too haha =P

I dont want to make stupid profit off this. just enough to recover my funds from the keyboard. so maybe an interest check would be more suitable

If you just want a couple why not buy the ones matt3o designed on shapeways?

If you decide to use this I suggest you to PM matt3o to recommend you on what material to print these out with. I remember  him talking about that it should either be printed in Frosted detail or Frosted Ultra detail but I can't seem to remember/find where he said that.

Looks like this thread: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=54942.msg1252984#msg1252984

...
The best material (and most expensive) is Frosted Ultra Detail (Frosted Detail should be also ok). I printed a version in White Strong & Flexible Polished which is way cheaper, it seems to work but quality is way lower and it seems a bit more fragile. I haven't tried the White Detail material, which I guess is halfway between the frosted and the white strong & flexible.

My frosted detail snapped and I had to scrape the stem out from one of my caps.

I'd rather overpay for Novatouch Sliders, assuming they are sturdy.
