Title: [AUS] HHKB Tour - Over
Post by: Jersern on Sat, 21 February 2015, 03:56:23
As my first (and probably the first ever in Australia) HHKB tour was very successful and I received a few enquiries since it concluded, I am running a second tour.

Rules are in the next post. They're subject to change at any time of course.

Thanks for looking!

Oh and I am back after a 2 month hiatus! :) Happy to do keyboard modding and helping out as before but if you really need to get a hold of me quick, email me at: jersernau@gmail.com I will try keep an eye on everything as much as I can. I will still promise replied within a day but please excuse me if I don't, school is getting to me and I have a life away from the internet... ( ノ^ω^)ノ゚ (sort of)

Note, it is a blank keyboard. Don't worry I'll supply a keymap sheet like last time.

Participants

The tour kicks off on Monday 9/03/15 and if you still want to participate please apply before then. I will close the form after about 13th of March. I decided to move the tour forward simply because I won't have time towards the end of March as my exam period is during early April.

Post by: Jersern on Sat, 21 February 2015, 03:56:42
Simple Rules
If you wish to participate, you must follow and agree to these rules!

As stated above, please don't damage or break my keyboard. It will be painful for both myself and you!  :(

You will also have to send a photo of your drivers license or government issued identification (i.e. passport if you don't have a drivers license) once you are confirmed by me. This is mainly as a security layer to prevent theft and for the sake of liability of any damages and other general stuff like that.

Copied and pasted from the my previous tour thread: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=66465.0
Feel free to have a look at that thread if you have concerns over the handling of personal information or anything in general.

Application form: http://goo.gl/forms/foLgusCO0Q
Applications are open till the end of March 2015. Please apply before then if you wish to participate.

I'd love to try out a Novatouch, always been interested in them but they're a pricey thing to buy just for experimentations sake.

I bought mine for experimentations sake lol. (Mainly cause the Realforce ones were out of stock.......  :( )

Awesome to see you do another tour man :thumb:

I'd join this tour, but I'm already planning to get a novatouch so I can harvest its stems :))
Title: Re: [AUS][Interest Check] Topre Keyboard Tours (Novatouch or HHKB)
Post by: Jersern on Sat, 21 February 2015, 04:15:01
Ahhh yes. I was going to harvest my Novatouch for my HHKB but then I decided I'm going to hold off till I get another Topre board. I really like the Novatouch for its TKL layout and as I said earlier, couldn't get the 55g Realforce I wanted so the Novatouch will have to do for now.

Post by: Ludovician on Sat, 21 February 2015, 04:58:10
Is your HHKB the dental band mod or the Type-S? Either way, I'd be interested. Already got an HHKB and got a Realforce on the way but I'd be interested in comparing them.

The Novatouch would also be interesting.

It's a dental band mod haha can't afford the real deal  :))

I bought my stock one off ebay for $351, and two days later found out that I could have bought a Type S from Tenso/Rakuten for $323. It was devastating. I still love it, but... could have been that much better.

Well I'm looking to buy a stock HHKB and a Realforce TKL in the 55g variant...  :p

Heh, the Realforce I'm waiting on is the 55g TKL. It's currently in California though, so who knows when it'll get here?

I won't be participating - I have an HHKB already, and Novatouch is not on my wish list.

But I will say thank you for potentially doing this again - it exposes a lot (well, some) people to different keyboards that are difficult to find out here. :)

I've just made the results public to anyone.   :thumb:   They were set to be visible after voting, but it didn't occur to me that you wouldn't be voting so wouldn't be able to see the results.  :))

Unfortunately I can't pick specific people to make it viewable to, so this is the best I can do; if it's not okay, let me know and I'll fix it.  :)

I've had a look at the poll here and the response I got on the other forums (and emails) and I have decided to run this tour with the HHKB silenced mod keyboard.

This tour will be opened up to Australians. I am happy to allow people in New Zealand participate given they pay to the previous person the added cost of shipping it express to New Zealand.

Please fill out this form to apply: http://goo.gl/forms/YnKWcpL8NN
Signing up means you agree to the conditions.

Sign ups will be open till the end of March and the tour begins at the start of April.

I've added some photos (refer to link in first post). Please don't be scared that the keyboard is blank! :D I will include a keymap sheet and I am sure you will get use to it after a single day. Also, don't pester me about the inverted space bar, I like inverted space bars and I will flip it back to the normal direction for the tour. Feel free to rotate it back if that tickles your fancy.

There is like 1 or 2 more but they're unconfirmed. Don't be surprised there's only two people though, Topre's here in Aus is like ultra niche.
Title: Re: [AUS] HHKB Tour (Rubber band modded) - Applications Open
Post by: rowdy on Sat, 28 February 2015, 22:29:23
I wonder if 'cause no-one sells them here, and few people would have heard of them, plus their relatively high cost, means no vendors want to sell them?

Their loss.

And ours, of course.
Title: Re: [AUS] HHKB Tour (Rubber band modded) - Applications Open
Post by: Polymer on Sat, 28 February 2015, 22:50:10
I'm surprised there isn't more interest though..

They're hard to find but you can buy them overseas...Topre is hard to get but there are a couple of places selling them...not HHKBs but RF and Type Heaven.....

Aussies can't be bothered is really the issue..too much effort..

RIP Aussie Topre Lovers

Probably... :)) Well for any Aussie or Kiwi that's interested, it's on the table. I'd prefer to have more people in the tour so everyone only has to pay a tiny bit to cover the initial shipping of the board.

Thanks for doing an interest check :) I would have joined had I not bought my HHKBs a few weeks back (I'm also from Sydney :D)

I didn't know there was an 83u.

I'm happy to mod my HHKB by throwing it into a bucket of black paint and selling it to you for $500, Jersern. It might need some cleaning afterwards, though.

Yep. I wouldn't be surprised if I had to wait quite a while..

Just FYI, I contacted MechKB and what they said was that they are ready to go ahead and make an order, but they're waiting for the Australian dollar to become stronger so that they can get a better deal. At the time of emailing I was told the price would be ~AU$289 which is significantly above the previous price, and what they'd want to charge for the board. Hopefully that is somewhat useful to know  :)

Hahah I also have 2 Novatouches :3 Yeah I bought 2 HHKB cause why not.. Since I was already buying one, thought I might grab both the silenced and non-silenced models. I really like the layout as a programmer myself but the lack of dedicated arrow keys still annoys me abit :( It's like the only thing that I need from a TKL board. The home, end, page up and page down I can live without but them arrow keys.. Be nice to organize like a meet up for Aus peeps as well. Really wanna meet some other keyboard enthusiasts just for like a beer or what not.

Also I emailed mechkb the other day regarding the 87U 55G and they said they should have stock within a month's time. Thought I'd let you know since you're after one of those as well :)

Out of curiosity, miroslav, whereabouts are you? I believe there are several people in Sydney around here and Rowdy is from Melbourne IIRC. I think I saw a Tasmanian once.

Hahah my gf is out of Sydney for the time being so I just spend all my money on boards (still do even when she's around and she's not happy about it). I'm from Sydney Hurstville area if you know where that is. Where abouts are you?

More
(http://i.imgur.com/pvgzsQY.jpg)

I still feel comfortable with my full size iKBC board next to it, but for the most part, the learning curve has been pretty relenting, which is probably due to being able to touch type, and already being used to having caps lock as ctrl. The navigation function cluster actually works really well too, which actually surprised me. I probably wrote around 200-300 lines of code with it today.

And of course, it feels lovely  :)

Thanks again to Jersern, should be a fun week.

I actually lived on the Gold Coast until about 2 months ago. I am now at Wollongong.

Don't hold your breath for the Aussie dollar, it is unlikely to be any stronger against US in particular, and no real reason to expect anything other than small fluctuations against Japan. This is because China's growth is weakening. The difference that 5-10% of currency exchange rate makes is not very much; $15-30 on $300. It's not really worth the time or effort to hold out for that.

I use a Majestouch TKL Blue at home and Kailh browns at work (I was poor at the time). I recently ordered a Majestouch 2 TKL Brown from mechkb. If I decide I prefer Topres, I will buy a Realforce TKL and sell the Browns.

On that note, I received an email from MechKB saying that they have place an order with Topre and are expecting arrival in the next few weeks. Though that was a few days ago and it's still not on their incoming products page. Hopefully it'll pop up there soon.

I sent off the keyboard to the next person this morning. Sad to see it go.

On an unrelated note, the computers at the post office at Chatswood are using Cherry brand keyboards. However when I used one to type in my email address for a digital receipt, they were unfortunately rubber dome.

Yeah, Cherry rubber domes are disappointing. You see the brand and associate it with the switches, and think that they'd probably be vintage Cherry. Then it turns out to be a dome.

Source: I bought one on ebay for $15 without confirming what type it was.

The . which started repeating and then I spammed a few keys.

DIP is 1 3 5

That's funny, I had a similar thing happen to me twice during the week. Once, the first time I connected it, and then once more later on in the week. It would lock on a key and just repeat itself like you said. Both times were fixed by reconnecting the usb cable. I just assumed that it was Windows having trouble with two keyboards be connected at the same time or something, so I didn't think much of it. But it is strange that you're getting the same thing.

Has it worked normally at all yet?

No, in fact when I got home I connected it before turning on the computer and it prevented it from booting. So I have never had it work. Having same problem with the laptop. Reconnecting it doesn't change anything.

Voted for HHKB.

Not Australian.

Much sadness.

FWIW I use my HHKB on my Mac pretty much exclusively, and have never had anything remotely like this happen.

I only used it on a Windows machine too.

I'll let you know if I have any problems with it when it gets to me, Jersern. I will also be using it exclusively on Windows.

Remember, guys, if you want to change the DIP switch settings, make sure you unplug the keyboard, change the setting, then plug it back in.

HHKB does not recognise switch changes while still plugged in.

OK, I just got the keyboard and so far it has been almost completely unresponsive. Most times it just doesn't do anything. Once it was sending out gibberish. What did you guys have to do to get it to work?

That's really odd. It worked fine when I was using it. Did anyone take it apart............................................? (Well I hope no one took it apart....) If you're on OSX you will need to get the dedicated drivers and change the dip settings. If you're on windows try changing the DIP settings.

That sucks Jersern :( If you need it, I can donate the controller from my HHKB if you think that might be the reason for the malfunction. I'm getting one of Hasu's BT controller pretty soon so I don't mind giving away the stock one from my hhkb.

If you can do that, it would be amazing but first I'll see if I can work out the root of the problem when I get it back.

So, since this isn't working I might just send it back to you. I'm the last person in the tour, right?

Email me your address, please. Also, if I do this would you mind if I send it non-express? Save a few bucks that way.

Yeah just let me know if you're able to fix it or not. Only thing is that I wouldn't be able to send it until I get my BT controller from hasu which I'm expecting it to be made within a month or so.

Mine works fine on my Mac without any special drivers.

The only thing you'd need the drivers for is the volume keys.

Well I haven't used OSX in like 3 years (windows on my iMac lol) so I am was just basing it off what I read somewhere. None the less, I am really just kinda concerned that someone might have opened up my HHKB since this time around I didn't put any security tape on it. Might just be a cable working its own way lose through all that shipping though...

Post by: nmur on Wed, 25 March 2015, 06:42:39
Wow that's pretty unfortunate  :(

Just to clear anything up (being the first person in the tour and all), I'll say again that I experienced the unresponsive/key repeating issue on the first time I plugged it in an tried it out, then after reconnecting the USB cable, it worked perfectly fine for the rest of the week, except one morning throughout the week, where I experienced the same issue again.

I most definitely didn't take it apart; the extent of my fiddling was changing the DIP switches while the kb wasn't disconnected, and popping off one cap. I kept it at work the entire week, locking it away in my desk after each day.

I didn't try another USB cable, but it seems unlikely that a bad cable could be responsible for this type of behaviour. I hope it really isn't anything too serious though...

Thanks for reminding me, I need to re-flip the spacebar before sending it back to Jersern. It took me about 30 seconds to find the spring the first time I flipped it

It's definitely not the cable. I've tried Jersern's cable and my own, and it doesn't work on either of them.

Ah, private high school. I'm envious. All my siblings went to Trinity Lutheran College whereas I was finishing primary school around the time my parents split up. I'm the youngest, obviously. Went through three public high schools before dropping out in grade 11 because it wasn't an adequate learning environment. I swear that set my education back 5 years or more.

What are you studying, Bomble?

A couple of weeks ago I was reading my textbook for my network security class. It was one of the intro chapters explaining about basic substitution ciphers such as Caesar and Vignere. Anyway, one of the revision questions gave me a large string of characters and said "This is done using a substitution cipher. Figure it out" or something along those lines. You're supposed to figure it out by analysing how often certain characters appear and arbitrarily assuming that they are the most commonly used English letters such as E or T, and going from there.

No time for that.

Eh, there are no marks for doing those, so none of us had to do it.

Speaking of activities that are a waste of time, though, the lecturer insists that all of our work is handwritten. I do it all by typing and then laboriously copy it in handwriting, which has no benefit whatsoever over simply handing in typed work, and it takes a couple of hours each week.

I have to say I used to type and then write out homework for when I did French in high school. It was just so much easier to edit and change mistakes while I struggled through putting some paragraphs together, if I tried to write it out on paper the first time it would turn out an absolute mess.
Title: Re: [AUS] HHKB Tour (Rubber band modded) - Underway
Post by: Ludovician on Fri, 27 March 2015, 10:47:02
That is one of the reasons I do it that way. Another reason is that I can actually focus on my work while I'm typing because it doesn't require effort after doing it for many hours a day every day for the last 10 years, whereas writing is so slow and takes too much of my concentration for me to really focus on thinking instead of writing.
Title: Re: [AUS] HHKB Tour (Rubber band modded) - Underway

Exactly, typing can be so easily done without too much thought. Writing is so laborious and focus-consuming.

Good to hear that it was an easy fix. I was tempted to ask you if it was alright to open it and check for obvious problems while I had it, but I mainly wanted it to test how much of an impact the reduced travel distance causes.

It was still good to type on, but I have to say it's notably worse than the stock HHKB and Type-S in feeling.

I had a strong suspicion that would like it, but wouldn't prefer it over Cherry's, just because of how strong of a preference I have for crisp, tactile switches. My suspicions were true, but I was actually surprised at how pleasant they felt. I liked the softness, and how rigid the caps felt on the switches (I don't like the wobbliness of Cherry's).

Ah, fair enough.

I don't think I've given Cherry a fair chance yet. My only Cherry board is a Das with browns, and I don't like it at all. I have yet to try any other Cherry types.

The HHKB feels kinda soft and buttery, and I think part of that is because it's not plate-mounted and the whole board is very light. I'm using the 55g Realforce right now, and 55g Topre surprisingly feels very different from 45g. Significantly stiffer. Overall I think I prefer 45g. Been taking my HHKB to uni lately.

I want to try to 55g-mod my HHKB at some point, but I don't want to ruin a perfectly good RF87 to do it.

Not much other choice, unfortunately.  55g domes are not generally available apart from in a RealForce keyboard :(
