Title: Filco blank keys on a Scorpius M10
Post by: timw4mail on Tue, 25 August 2009, 13:34:18
On a whim, I purchased a blank set of Filco keys.  I don't have a Filco board, but I have a Scorpius M10.

I got the keys in the mail today, and the only place that doesn't fit, key for key, is the right Alt/Win/Context/Ctrl cluster, because the M10 uses letter-sized keys for the Win and Context keys.

The left Ctrl/Win/Alt cluster fits, although there is a small amount of extra space around this cluster.

Since the Filco keycaps fit more snugly on the Cherry switches than the original keys, the key action feels more precise than with the original keycaps. Providing solder issues don't rear their ugly head, it seems like the set of Filco keys with the M10 might make a cheaper alternative to a Filco.

It definitely seems that the keycaps can make a huge difference in the feel of a keyboard, even with the same switches.

Really, the Scorpius isn't bad for the price, but the Filco keycaps really do improve the feel of the keyboard.

Of course, by the time you buy a Scorpius, the Filco keycaps, and pay shipping for getting the two of them from different places, you've paid almost as much as you would have for a real Filco, without the potential for dodgy soldering, of course.

It's still a savings of about $40 over a Filco.  I would just rather have the Filco, though.

Or a Cherry G80-3000.

I'm probably the only strange one who prefers the M10's keycaps.  I'm really not too fond of the finish on Filco caps, the texture on the M10's caps are much better in my opinion.

I like the G80-3000 keycaps the best.  Nice, durable finish and laser etching.  The precision of the etching/filling of the G80s keycaps does leave something to be desired, though.

How much is a Scorpius? I thought they were in the $60 region, so $30 keycaps + shipping and you are pretty much in the same territory as the non-NKRO Blue Cherry Filco.

i liked the scorpius better than the das.  i've never used a filco so cant compare with that.  it was cheap tho. I think I paid $50 after a nice bing ebay discount.

I haven't had any trouble with my Scorpius, which I got for about $50 and the price of shipping. I saved a whole lot of money over a Das, though.

I'm pleasantly surprised at how well I can handle a blank keyboard. I wonder what the reaction to it at work will be.

On that Scorpius watch out for the keys you use allot especially if you are a heavy hitter. When I got my first Scorpius I would bottom them out all the time and my first one developed a dead cursor key (playing some flash game). My second one had no issues but I had also learned to not bottom them out as hard as well. Coming from a Model M those blues are light. Now days I can't type on the Model M any more with out my fingers starting to hurt I've gotten to used to the lighter boards.

I really think the Scorpius will do OK as long as you don't bang on it to hard. And even if you do it is easy to fix.

With the Model F being my main board, I've definitely lightened my average keystroke.

So the soldering issues show mostly by physical abuse than electrical wear? That's good to know.
