Title: Do you wear shoes indoors?
Post by: Novus on Sun, 22 February 2015, 17:31:49
Do you wear shoes inside of your own residence, do you live in a house or apartment and what kind of flooring do you have?

Never at my place, when I'm at someone else place , I repsect their policy about it.

I wish I was in the habit of not wearing them, but I do. There's not a good place to put them by my door (main door leads into the kitchen). Also, I'm still potty-training a dog, so there's the chance of stepping in a puddle if I forget to take him out.

My house is a mix of hard floors (kitchen, dining, hall, bathroom) and carpet (bedrooms, office, living room).

If I'm at someone else's house I usually try to remember to take them off. Most people don't seem to care if you're shoe-less, but the opposite does bother some.

First thing I do is remove my shoes when I get home. We have carpet, tile, vinyl and laminate.

I do sometimes. People who have policies of making you take your shoes off usually make me anxious because who knows what I was doing before I arrived and my feet might be sweaty or my socks will have holes in them that day or whatever.

If you don't wear shoes indoors do you wear socks or slippers?

At home I pull off my shoes immediately, although I often use lightweight "slides" especially when going to the garage, basement, or outside.

As a person who works in in-home sales, it irritates me when someone asks me to remove my shoes to enter their house, when they are completely clean, and I am careful to keep my shoes clean. If my shoes are dirty or muddy, I understand the need to remove them.

I hate dogsh!t, and I hate walking in someone's yard where someone's dog has soiled the yard. But when the owner expects me to remove my shoes to prevent me from tracking HIS dog's sh!t into HIS house, on HIS property, I find that to be extraordinarily insulting. Honestly, I think that he should be cleaning HIS dog's sh!t off my shoes since he invited me there in the first place. If he does not like dogsh!t then he should not have a dog. I don't, for that specific reason.

But I digress into my own pet (no pun intended) peeve.

I remove my shoes at home for reasons of comfort rather than cleanliness.

Nope, I do love my shoes but cleaning all the craps the shoes bring in is hell....

In the other hand I use slippers at home though, but that slippers never left the house. That since I have feet injury and my feet can't stand the cold from the marble floor

Shoes generally off in summer (or other hot weather), on otherwise.

Polished floor boards.

After working in a hospital due years and now a lab, I make it a habit of taking them off at home. Plus I'm part Japanese and have a baby that gets into everything.

Nope.  I try to go barefoot as much as I can, but with plantar in both feet, I don't last long without my cushy house slippers or some flip flops.

Hell no! That's dirty.

Shoes stay in the foyer. Slippers in the house.

Me entire life I have never wore them indoors. Tracks in dirt, water, bacteria, you name it. But some relatives always wear their shoes in their homes, so my socks always get wet when I'm at any of their places. It drives me nuts. 0.o

The only time I make sure to take my shoes off the moment I walk in the door is when it is wet outside, unless I came home for lunch.  Then I don't have time to take my work boots off.  That is also the only time my work boots even come in the house.  But the only place I work that is close enough for me to do that it is just black dirt and sand.  My house has the original flooring from when the house was built in 1909.

Same, shoes are left at the door or in the mudroom, its always a mess to clean up if there is dirt or wet shoes.

This is a revelation. I've always thought that taking shoes off at home is an Asian thing. Cool to read that many don't wear them indoors!

My house has marbled floor. Would be strange to wear shoes and bringing in all the dirt and stuff.

The outdoor conditions are pretty cold, wet and grimy right now, so having outdoor-shoes indoors would make it quite unpleasant. The shoes come off in the hallway. Never liked slippers.
Floors are wood and linoleum, with different kinds of carpets. One oriental rug.

And let your feet breathe, man!

I wear shoes or sandals at work.

He would go into public bathrooms with bare feet? How big is your office, and how clean is the bathroom? Would he take his shoes off in bathrooms at restaurants? What about gas stations?

Feel free to wear shoes in your own house if you want. It doesn’t bother me, though I’ll be happy to silently judge you. Please don’t bring your gross shoes into my house.

I’m happy to wear slippers inside when visiting friends with that custom. Personally I’ve always thought slippers were pretty weird though.

I pretty much always have socks anyways but in the winter i use slippers as well to keep my feet warmer. I'd say most Japanese people probably have socks but some remove them once they settle in.

It's kinda like that one witness that then told everyone, also it's again blown out of proportion because it's mind blowing to Japanese people because literally 99% of the population does it, even at work, stores, hotels, etc.

Only heathens wear shoes inside!

I got nice wooden floors and wouldn't dream about having shoes inside. Its not even comfortable to wear shoes, el natural is where its at

Barefoot unless wife has friends over, some people are sensitive I guess. Also socks when it hits -15c outside because then the floors get kinda cold

Sounds more like his wife’s hang-up than her friends’.

Maybe he has hobbit feet? Or she doesn’t want her friends to see his pink toenail polish?

This is a one-sided response.  I gotta speak up for the other side.  I often wear my boots inside.  Yes, I am a heathen.  Yes, I am part redneck.  I wear my boots around if there is any chance I might go outside later - social calls, chores, checking on little issues that come up, etc.  I also have a lot of glassware and chemicals out in my lab area, and I have the safety culture drilled into me.  I keep my boots clean and comfy, and I vacuum the floor often.  If I intend to spend the day inside, I have a pair of slip on moccasins that I wear around the house.

Is your lab area in/near your home? In that case I think it makes perfect sense to wear boots or closed-toe shoes.

I'm making an assumption here, but from your double spacing after periods, I'm guessing you're an older gentleman? Could also be that generation gap. (And I mean no offense, of course)

Exactly the same for me. When I know I won't be going out again, I'll take off my boots near my bed and walk around the house in socks.

Most of our home is carpeted. With wooden tiles in the kitchen and dining room, and ceramic tile in the bathrooms.

I'm pretty old.  All of 26.  Interesting metric of age though, noticing the double space after the full stop.  I might use that in the future.

Haha, it's definitely not a perfect measure. :p Still, I do think quite a bit people who use double spacing tend to be older... from learning on a typewriter, I'm assuming?

Well, I guess we're going off topic here. I mentioned before that I'm usually barefoot at home... right now it's cold here though, and I hate wearing just socks. I'm considering buying a nice pair of indoor slippers.

i think you might have a point here.

i've heard people say they don't take off their shoes because their feet smell.

i've never seen...derr smelled...this issue ever before.  but then again, maybe that's cause 100% of people i know take their shoes off regularly.  so maybe people with feet smell issues are people that don't take off their shoes?  a self-caused problem?

The only time I have had a foot smell issue was due to the type of leather used on my boots in the Navy on top of not having an interior liner.  Just my foot, sock, leather.  But I would have to wear those things 12 to 18 hours a day depending on if I was deployed or not.  Still wore ankle socks with those even in the winter.  My work boots now are Carolina brand with a nice interior liner and I have never had a foot smell even working in 120°F, corn, mud, coal, or soybeans.  The only thing that really makes my boots smell bad is when I have to work around gluten.  That has got to be the worst smell on Earth.  It is worse than a bird strike on a 2000° turbine.

I have too many shoes, I can't keep them all by the door. My smart shoes and my trainers for the gym are in my room, so when I had a free second to put them on a while before going to the gym, I did.

Then I could peruse the internet and not worry about those extra seconds when I wanted to go to the gym.

Yeah, the common restrooms at work that everyone uses.  They are kept clean, but how clean can a common use restroom be?  I think he's one of those people that wears sandals everywhere and takes them off in his office, and I guess sometimes he wouldn't bother to put them back on before going to the restroom.
