Title: Any recommendations for FOOD in Northern San Francisco?
Post by: dante on Wed, 25 February 2015, 12:43:37
I will be briefly stopping by in March; was curious what delicious hidden treats might exist.

The last time I was there all I saw people eating were soup in sour dough bread bowls

Very interested in Sushi, Ramen/Pho, Fatty cuts of meat.

Of course this is all by the Pier / etc off North Point St. (Near Pier 45/39.)

Thanks in advance!  :thumb:

Update 2/28

Here are a list of places I'm thinking I'll be checking out:

Off the Grid: Fort Mason Center (http://offthegridsf.com/markets) - Supposed to be a bukake of Food Trucks.
Cod Mother Fish and Chips (http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-codmother-fish-and-chips-san-francisco)
Loving Cup (http://www.lovingcup.com/) (I love rice pudding)
Schulzie's Bread Pudding (http://schulziesbreadpudding.com/) (Love Bread pudding too; though feedback on Yelp is touch and go...)
Bi Rite Creamery (http://biritecreamery.com/) - GH member approved.
Marco Polo (http://www.yelp.com/biz/marco-polo-italian-ice-cream-san-francisco) Durian Gelato!

I highly suggest going to SeriousEats.com and looking through their recommendations of San Francisco places to eat. For example, this article on Pizza by the Slice in the Bay Area (http://www.seriouseats.com/2015/01/the-best-pizza-by-the-slice-san-francisco-oakland-berkeley.html) was a great read.

And of course, asking our many Bay Area users can't hurt :)).

I'm avoiding pizza at the moment.  Heavy gluten / grains in thick pizza dough are causing some intestinal bleeding; but white rice / rice noodles are fair game.  The meat in pho is usually tender enough that it doesn't bother me.

You should basically pick any other neighborhood. :-) The whole city is pretty small, so even on foot it’s pretty easy to get around, and then there are Muni/BART. Also, is there a North Street in SF?

There are some pretty good Ramen places in Japantown. The good Phở places are in the Tenderloin and in SOMA.

I hate you, now I want pizza. :<

There's one pizza place within 20 miles and it's godawful. Like, driving up to Sonora and going to Little Caesar's is better, and Little Caersar's is terrible.

My preference in pizza is for thick doughy crust, a minimum of sauce, and a nice thick blanket of cheese. This rarely happens, but damn is it good.

You should basically pick any other neighborhood.
To elaborate, the whole Embarcadero/Fisherman’s Wharf/North Beach area is basically tourist town. I haven’t spent too much time up there, but most of the restaurants are pretty expensive, and you can probably find better food of any particular type somewhere else in the city, cheaper. I’ve heard there are some good seafood places if you have money to spend.

There are lots of good Italian restaurants if you walk down toward Jackson Square, and there good Chinese restaurants in Chinatown, both of which are pretty close to you.

Can you recommend a couple of Chinese places in Chinatown? Last time I was there with people I wasn't really impressed with the place we ended up at, we've got one up in Sonora that's better. :P (Of course everything pales compared to the inexplicably amazing Chinese Buffets that were in Asheville, NC when I lived there from 2001-2005. Like, better than California sit-downs, it was weird as hell. Not just one, there were three that were amazing.)

Reminds me of the ****ing weather.

It also gives me a Chinese place with terrible reviews and a menu item called 'Strangely Flavored Chicken'. That... Does not sound appetizing. XD

I’ve had great meals at Z&Y and at The Potsticker. I’ve also had good luck just looking in restaurant windows and going somewhere that looked busy and/or had tasty looking things cooking. I don’t go to Chinatown all that often, so I’m not really the best person to ask. There’s also great Chinese food in the western side of the city, and in the peninsula / south bay.

Updated OP with some places I'm going to try out.

Literally I'll be there from Noon on a Friday to 9AM on Sunday.  It's gonna be a challenge cramming it all down - but I think I'm up for it. :)

Bi Rite Creamery (http://biritecreamery.com/) - GH member approved.
There are a whole bunch of good ice cream places in SF, but if you decide to come to the Bi-Rite in the Mission, that’s like a block from me, so I’d be glad to meet you there and hang out for a bit. There are like 50 good restaurants of pretty much any cuisine you like within 4 blocks.

This is going to sound very gross .............

In Taiwan they serve Pig Blood Cake (http://taiwanfoodculture.net/ct.asp?xItem=48253&ctNode=2688&mp=1502).

Any restaurants serving this?

Also any fruit places that serve fresh Durian or Durian Ice Cream?  (This request is probably impossible - but what the hell...)

You can definitely find fresh durian in Chinatown or in some Asian grocery stores in other parts of town.

If you go out to the opposite corner of town from where your base is (the sunset district), there’s a gelato place on Taraval Street called Marco Polo that has all kinds of tropical fruit gelato, including pretty good durian gelato.

No idea about Taiwanese pig blood cake, but you might be able to find something similar in Chinatown, which is largely Cantonese (your link mentions that pig/duck blood cake is from Fujian, so I suspect those also existed in Guangdong).

Added Marco Polo to my list ... I'm going to need to fast for a few days before arriving. :D
