Post by: hwood34 on Wed, 25 February 2015, 18:40:17
This giveaway is for a Gateron Starter Pack consisting of 50 Gclears, 50 Gblacks, and 50 Gblues. To enter, tell me about your favorite experience here on GH (I know, I know, done before). It could be talking to someone, getting a board, giving/getting a gift, or anything else you can think of ;). I'll leave this open til the end of my buy (where these will come from), March 12th. The prize will get shipped out along with everything else.

Awesome of you to do this Hwood! this community is doing so many giveaways! i'll need to throw something together soon as well.

Man i don't even know which one's my favorite cause this community has been nothing but amazing since i've come here but one that comes to mind was when i won my first artisan cap from HKP, i was so extremely happy when i got the PM that i took a ****ty picture of the PM rather than rationally doing a screen cap XD

Thanks for the opportunity! Good luck everyone!

/!\ Not an entry /!\

Hard to say, most memorable would be my recent win in bro bots (so fresh, received yesterday), and in the final day of the clack radnelac.
But my favorite is probably when I got send a free IBM M in one of my first day here, I was a 10 less posts and this is how I understood that Gh was more than a forum but a community.
I guess hanging out with Ngt is ok too, especially when he pays for food   ^-^

Favorite moment on GH was participating in the Halloween exchange last year. I had fun in choosing what to send, it was my first package I have ever send, so that was exciting. And I was so curious what I would receive, and now the story gets a little sad, but nothing came. And it became December, and I got to buy my Brobot from Hoffman and with it came a surprise package with some nice chocolates. I was childishly glad with it. Best day ever (well for something a online community can do)...

Hands down my best GH memory was designing the MA42 with my friend Adam, sadly the project is unfinished because we left for school before it was done. But this summer should see a working board. The whole process of research, design, and production really showed me why GBs take time and how life can get in the way of a hobby. Also it was really fun to work with a close Bro to build a board, we were both working full time so most of the work was done between 1 and 4am leaving us with an average of 4ish hours of sleep a night.  :)) Many lunch naps were had at work.

Sir osi gifted me his DOTA2 Granite caps, when I asked him if they were for sale, in a totally unrelated thread, he insisted to pay for the shipment also. It was a detail of spontaneous generosity to a stranger I will never forget. As is hwood's, that not only invests a lot of time and effort in the benefit of GH, but also present us with a gift.

Giving this a much needed bump and entering my thoughts.

For me, it's really hard to pin down a favorite experience since there have been so many.  I've just had a ton of fun with the community and coming to know more of them better.  The feedback when I started having fun with casting nearly two years ago (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=41371.msg826550#msg826550) was a fun way to start with the community.  I just saw so many people diving in a really engaging.

Then there was Glissant's Filco giveaway (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=43163.0;nowap) that was just a blast with all the ridiculousness that went on there.  I'm hoping the link to the terrible attempt at twerking is now dead.

I loved seeing the passion of people when I got rid of my Hack Orange (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=49199.msg1061568#msg1061568).  Some people really go balls out here.

Another memory that was huge for me was when I got my first Clack through the generosity of a member during the first secret santa I took part in.  I also just had a blast running this year's secret santa and seeing everything everyone did.  It's always awesome to see the generosity of members.

It's also been great getting to meet people on here and hang out with them.  BadWrench is an awesome guy to meet and hang out with if you're ever down near San Diego and it's always been interesting to hang out and talk with him.  He's one of those people who's just full of passion about everything he does and it's always awesome to see in person how so many people on here are like that.  I don't always get it with some of the stuff since it's not always my cup of tea, but it's just so cool to see people's passion and hear them talk about it.

Probably one of my most formative experiences though was when I organized and ran the Megaman group buy (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45596.0).  It taught me a ton and really gave me a lot of respect for people who run large group buys and get them done quickly.

I wish I could really pin down a singular favorite moment, but there have been so many just fun and interesting moments here that have really made it feel like a community and that have compelled me to stick around.

Favorite experience has to be the conversations I have had with CPTBadAss. Great guy and I really enjoyed getting to talk with him. I look forward to future conversations.

I also really enjoyed the Clackvent Radnelac. Definitely a great experience for me and I know it was for others as well. Clack really spread the love around and it was great to see the community show him love after he missed a week and then disclosed his hospital stay. (Clack if you see this I hope you're situation is improving)

Thanks for doing this hwood!

Giving this a much needed bump and entering my thoughts.

People are just tired of getting free stuff, I think.

My favorite experience started when I made my first post, in the Ergonomics forum.  The awesome users there gave me valuable feedback that helped me more effectively start my endeavor for a better typing experience.  Since then, I bought 2 mechanical keyboards.  By researching and reading a small fraction of the posts on GeekHack, my understanding of keyboards developed.  As much as I love my NMB board with Hi-Tek switches, I needed a smaller board for work.  I made a post asking for recommendations between 3 keyboards and, again, GeekHack members gave me invaluable information.  But buying a new board is a big investment for me and I can't afford to get stuck with a board that doesn't feel right, so I waited and researched some more.  Then, the third great thing happened to me.  I decided to look at the Group Buy forums and found the thread for the Red Scarf RS84 board.  It immediately piqued my interest.  It wasn't perfect for me but it was close and it was an opportunity for me to build my first custom board at an "affordable" price.  No one responded to my questions about the RS84 and I was a little disappointed.  After going all emo (I stared into the abyss), I decided to try my hand at building my own layout.   Why did I do this?  I hadn't found something that was tailored to my needs and I knew that I could take the results of ijprest's keyboard layout tool and feed it into swill's plate building tool to create a legitimate design for a bespoke keyboard.  If I wanted to forgo totally handwiring the board, I could buy Melvang's enablers instead of designing a PCB.  How was I able to do this?  I used the knowledge of switches, wiring, and design that I acquired from the vast wealth of knowledge available on GeekHack.  Inspired by elements of my Ducky (swapped ctrl and caps lock), my NBM (split spacebar), elements of Dihedral's 80% design, and many other designs I found on GeekHack, I designed my own 75% board.   Feedback from GeekHack members, educated observation of my keyboard usage, and experience with Autohotkeys led me to design a 60% board that incorporates my most-used keys from a larger board on the main layer.   I am still very much a novice to this hobby, but in the span of one week, I went from considering which stock board to purchase, to considering purchasing a custom keyboard, to designing my own custom keyboard with the intent to build it.  It may cost the same as an ergodox, but I would much rather build my own personalized board.  It's not a question of if I can build it but when I can build it.  I In 4 months, I transformed from a total rubber dome peasant to a member of the mechanical keyboard master race, and am on the cusp of becoming a legit (semi-legit) maker.  My favorite experience wasn't just a single event, it is the ongoing process of learning and growing that GeekHack has empowered me to undergo.  My thanks go out to every member of GeekHack who has made it into the tool that has made me into a tool.  Wait, that didn't come out right.

Probably when I was down in the dumps about getting laid off and people like Demik, JD, Bunny and many more came to my rescue and helped me out so much. Never forget that. It actually brought me to tears on more than one occasion and I could never ever show how thankful I was.

Demik's message he sent me got me the worse.

This was actually one of my favorites as well.  It was amazing to see the community come together so quickly to help out.  The resulting pictures of your little one on Christmas was awesome.

Having been around for a little while now, there are too many other moments to pick out.
Some of the highlights include:
Hanging out with Nubbinator.  I feel like a noob every time we start really getting into the technical stuff, but it really encourages me to do my research on stuff. That and the fact that we both really enjoy good beer.  He also surprised my by gifting me my first clack (I had acquired a second one in a sale, but gifted it to my little brother when he picked up a mechanical board).

Being part of Hoffmanmysters huge giveaway a little while back.

Taking part in all the ridiculous contests on this forum.  You guys are all super creative in designing your contests and I have really enjoyed taking part in them.

Secret Santa.  Sent is the most insane secret santa I have ever witnessed  :thumb:

Helping MOZ with the 60% acrylic case development.  It was a lot of fun to really get into the R&D of the design and to be part of that.  It was also a lot of fun doing the giveaway for the prototype case that I had.

Short and simple. The day several folks changed their avatar to mine but rotated in several ways. We then proceeded to post in order. Then we had click clack create the "skelegirlshark" and brocaps created the "mechagirlshark". It was amazing and humbling and just all around fun. One of the reasons I loved and still love GH!

I think my best single experience, was running about 3 rounds of a GB for ergodox cases in metal. Only one serious mistake, and everyone seemed to be happy to have their aluminum or stainless steel cases, and as a result I have a keyboard that weighs five pounds and change. I got to feel like I was really participating and contributing, and of course I learned firsthand what the GB organizers have to deal with, even at the small scale I was accepting orders (avg of 7-10 buyers per run).

But participating in GB has been fun too ... I have a JD45 prototype, I've built two phantoms (MK just, you know, carries the PCB), and oh yes! I am now typing on my CalmDepths keys  .... this is the GB / keyset for which I created an account at all.

I've had so many awesome experiences on GH that I can never list them all.

Just had a 50,000 word conversation in one week with another GHer on political issues.

Was being entertained everyday by another GHer who admits to being a mental patient...

But my most recent example of mutual help that keeps on growing, is when Grim Fandango asked me for ML caps last year. I was going to give them to him but he missed 3 PMs somehow and I wound up sending the lot to someone else (also our MannyCalavera decided he didn't need ML after all). He felt apologetic so he offered me keycaps. I didn't need keycaps, but Katushkin did, so I suggested giving them to Katushkin instead. We had a nice 3 way mutual thanking session. So I find this very nice - it's an example of our community spirit!

This giveaway is just like that. Hwood decides that he doesn't need something and wants to give it rather than have his Gaterons do nothing at home. This will probably start a virtuous cycle because the recipient will feel like doing something for other people and pass on the goodwill!

Well done Hwood!

BTW, I was going to post this eventually and this giveaway inspired me to post now, but I got a bunch of Model M hammers and springs from Kalrand a while back. I don't need so many, so when I've sorted them out I'm happy to give them away to anyone who needs!

I was really taken aback when I was told about this, how you had just passed up on the offer of free caps. This is probably my best experience, and I thank you both for giving me the opportunity to have these caps :)

Oooo a giveaway!

Well, being a new user for a few months now I haven't really been able to really have any really memorable experiences yet. One thing about this forum and community is that we're all here because of one thing, and that's our undying love of keyboards. Whenever I bring up keyboards to my friends or family, they all treat me in a sort of way that just makes me feel like i'm weird. Maybe I am weird, but keyboards are such an interesting topic to me ever since I started taking an interest a year or two ago. Finding this website really helped me, because it showed me that not only was I not alone but it showed me that there are people that are even more fanatics than I am. That makes me feel welcome, and I guess that's my first good experience here on GH. The feeling of belonging, which is something that I really appreciate time and time again as I visit these forums. Even though I've never gotten a chance to get a cool keycap from Brobots, Binge, CC, etc, or been able to spend all types of money in groupbuys to buy amazing custom keyboards or keycaps, I still come back to these forums because of the wonderful people who make it happen.

Probably my favorite experience here was the secret santa this past December.

I joined 2 other secret santas on other communities and one community didn't even deliver (no follow up by the organizer and the other person just received his gift and dipped. Made me feel pretty left out and a bit salty) and the other just took something off the shelf and threw it into a bubble envelope. No note or anything.

Meanwhile here on GH everyone seemed to get their gifts out (though some late).

It looked like everyone took the time to try and get their recipient an awesome gift that they would like (I know I spent 2 weeks deciding what to get). The best part is everyone came on to share their thanks after (which didn't happen on the other 2 communities).

Definitely my most memorable experience here on GH.

Hopefully I didn't miss the deadline again? That would be embarassing (the OP says 12th...).

Would love to try gaterons. I doubt that I would even need all those switches so I'd probably just part them out to people looking to try them.

Probably hanging out in the Bro Caps Therapy thread, sharing nervousness, sorrow, and joy with everyone else, as far as actually being on the forum. Related to it, probably the Bay Area GH meetup I went to in January, which was an amazing experience where I learned a ton and got to experience things I hadn't been exposed to before.

Honestly GH as a whole has been a pretty cool, welcoming place. <3

Wow, what a question... and a difficult one.

As a pretty new member who's gotten to really enjoy some large sitewide events (such as Clackvent), I have a lot of fond memories of GH and have learned to love this place and that it's pretty damn awesome.

So, I guess my favorite GH thing ever is actually... a series of 3 things.

My entire GH journey began when a GH member (who shall temporarily remain nameless), sold me an Arctic Lion Keyng V2 at cost. He saw, on /r/mk, that I had really wanted a Keyng from the recent Binge sale and that I had missed the boat and just wasn't fast enough. So, he decided to help me out :). That was my first example of GH generosity. This single key spiraled me out into a full on artisan collector. Suddenly, I loved Clacks, and BB's, and Gasmasks (which I had previously thought looked silly). It was a huge change.

That change to a love of artisans then brought me to actually try GH. My first posts here are in the Hot Keys Talk thread, I do believe, and the main reason I initially came here was for info on martin's sale and to try and get in. When I noticed that there was a community around just discussing the sale and lamenting over missing it, I decided to stay and participate. This meant I was more active and interested in GH when my second event started: the Ctrl-Alt Advent Giveaway.

The CA Advent Giveaway was something I was eligible to enter, so it immediately piqued my interest. I initially started by just entering every day and not reading other posts. But, slowly, I started reading all of the entry posts, because they always contained something good. A nice thanks, some good holiday cheer, or just some optimism. It was all very refreshing. Everyone was remembered and had more of a personality than they did on /r/mk, this was when I started noticing the areas where GH beats reddit, people are just more connected, it's a real community, the knowledge base is crazy on this site, and everyone here is so generous, it blows /r/mk out of the water. As that event progressed, I looked forward to not only seeing who won (and their thank you message to Bun), but also very excitedly waiting for the next day's prize. The whole event was a lot of fun and was a good insight into how most people on GH, are just nice people. And then December ended... and we all know what happened next...

Clackvent started. Clackvent is my actual favorite GH experience. I was quite eligible to participate and, after Clack removed the "first post wins" rule, I had a very real chance of entering each day, so I started obsessing. This was when I found Clack Therapy and started engaging with more members and just having more conversations on GH in general. God, Therapy was so fun for those two months, so many good times to be had. Everything from the gnome jokes, to the heartfelt messages we all sent out when we learned Clack had been hospitalized :(. That was where I got to learn so much more about the site, the well known members, everyone's personality, and... a tiny bit of drama or two. That thread was amazing and was one of my favorite GH things ever. Entering the event was also amazing. The rush of excitement whenever you saw Clack post in Spy or got a Tapatalk notification and then that ******* clenching feeling as you waited for the winner to be announced. I, obviously, entered to win, but never expected to actually win. My first win was on JD-day, so another show of GH generosity with CC giving almost everyone a Clack. After winning one, I certainly didn't expect to win more... let alone, make it into the actual orgy :D. So, Clackvent was a lot of fun (I hope he repeats it next year!).

After Clackvent ended, I had made a friend or two, found some ICs and GBs I was interested in, and found some great discussion threads. I was now a GH'r. /r/mk now rarely gets opened and, with it, my reddit usage has gone down, :)).

Sorry for the wall of text guys :-/, I am pretty guilty of doing that really often. But, my favorite GH experience was joining GH, so I felt it appropriate to tell the whole story of how I got here and why I decided to stay. I love this place and I have to say that it has one of the greatest communities on the internet :thumb:.

Thanks for the giveaway hwood! Another example of GH generosity! WHEN DOES IT END!?!?!?!

My favorite GH moment was when an old school member randomly logged on one day and read all the WTB clack classifieds and PM'd the users the clacks he/she had for dirt cheap.

Scored 2 black clacks
Dustin got a candy corn Fn
And someone else scored some tri's...

It was an epic day :D

Fav moment was when I made my first purchase: Vintage Blacks from Lurch. He made me confident in future purchases (i didn't dare to purchase anything online) and I'm really happy to break this barrier? I have no idea what I'm talking about gg.
