So the Mayor of Washington D.C. gave her public reading on Initiative 71 (http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-politics/dc-mayor-despite-legal-pot-city-will-not-become-like-amsterdam/2015/02/24/c34a4d3a-bb9b-11e4-b274-e5209a3bc9a9_story.html). Making marijuana possession legal within the district.
Great, good for them.
But her quip about it not becoming "like Amsterdam" has me scratching my head.
It's slightly risky to make a remark if you clearly have no idea of local laws (http://dc.the-netherlands.org/news/2015/02/marijuana-laws-and-policies.html).
Combine that with the fact that:
- The lifetime rate of marijuana consumption for ages 15-64 in the Netherlands is 25.7% compared to 41.5% in the US.
- Living in Amsterdam is over 37% cheaper (http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Netherlands&city1=Amsterdam&country2=United+States&city2=Washington%2C+DC)
Does that mean she is saying she will do her best to make her city worse?
No hate on the people of Washington (both the state in the West and the district in the East) I've been to both and enjoyed my stay and the sights there.
But a Bill O'Reilly understanding (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpU0NxPhA78) of "facts" makes me angry.

Im going to save my money and travel 3-4 times as often to Amsterdam just to compensate

.176 oz = 4.9 grams
For anyone wondering...
Also hasnt amsterdam brought about big change in the recent years in regards to this sort of stuff? Maybe shes thinking of the 'old' amsterdam?

Not really. It has always been 5 grams as far as I know. Selling to people without a license, so essentially all tourists, was banned a few years back but cities were allowed to disregard that rule entirely which most major cities did. It was mostly something to give the border cities something to work with. Drugs runners were causing a lot of trouble.
Never impacted people in Amsterdam though.

Yeah, I linked to it in the OP. Bill O'Reilly sounds like an absolute idiot.

I thought the 'red light district' is nothing like it used to be? I wasnt just thinking marijuana law.

Well, your infographic is awesome, it's true, but it fails to show that Washington, D.C. has the most hypocritical phonies on Earth.
Also, you have to keep in mind that the Mayor is only talking about one thing: marijuana, when she is talking about Wash, D.C. and Amsterdam. But like I said, D.C. is the land of hypocrites. In the Congress right now there are Gay Republicans who cruise the tidal basin park near the Pentagon for anonymous sex every night, but who vote against gay rights during the day. [if you don't believe me go check it out for yourself, just don't kneel down or bend over, if you don't like penises.]

Laws on the books are theory, enforcement is the practice.
Together, and only together, do they form a sound and robust legal system.
In THEORY, the constitution of the People's Republic of China is more liberal and offers more protection to minorities and women than almost any Western country. Yes, I've attended academic discussions on this.
In Practice, the second highest ranking ethnic Tibetan in the PRC was denied a hotel room in Beijing a few years back. The big irony? He was in Beijing to transact official business during the NPCC (parliament) congress. And Beijing officials had ordered everybody not to give rooms to Tibetans to prevent Tibetans from coming to present petitions.
Similarly, in THEORY the Indian penal code is one of the most thorough and complete criminal codes anywhere. It's actually the basis for many other countries' criminal codes including mine.
In Practice, rape, molestation and sexual harassment in India is legal and socially acceptable as long as the perpetrator is of higher or equal status to the victim.
