Title: XTant plate *shipping to me*
Post by: dorkvader on Fri, 27 February 2015, 17:57:26
I have contacted a place about getting custom XTant plates made. He has estimated $70/ea for a small run of 5. Does anyone else with a prototype kit want one?

This is a GB for XTant prototype plates. You will most likely be able to use these with the production version but that has not yet been determined. WCass has his working using this plate and the prototype PCB. I plan to finish up my prototype kit with this plate. You may consider joining this GB if you plan to build a prototype XTant.

This GB will close on March 4. Payment is expected at the time the GB closes (or beforehand). If the price ends up being less than your payment I will partial refund the difference. Everyone is splitting shipping from the shop to me, which I will bill you for when I ship them to you.

Since there are only 10 prototype PCBs, and one has already been made, I figured getting a quote of 5 is a good start. Please refer to the XTant topic for details on the project as a whole.

I will be monitoring this topic and will respond to questions here or via PM.

Here is a word from WCass about the Prototype kits:
Quote
The two rivets on the back plate are not where they need to be. I removed them using a rotary tool with a cut wheel - cut away the flange on the back of the plate then popped the tops off. The new PCB has one hole for a new stud between the Caps Lock and A and another hole between right bracket and pipe-backslash. The second of these two holes is not in the best location and I plan to move it between Enter and up arrow. You might make a new hole in the PCB there and use that. I used two clamps to hold the PCB to the back plate to mark the location to drill new holes. Aligned properly, you should see two white silkscreen dots through the old rivet holes on the back of the back plate. Mark the back plate through the new holes and drill with a 1/8" bit. Secure the PCB with two #4-40 x 1/4" flat head machines screw (plate side) and weld nuts (PCB side), and #6-32 x 3/8" bolt with a star washer on the PCB side. With the back plate facing up, put the rivet washer over the #6 bolt and around the captive nut. Put on the controller, star washer and then nut. Feed wire through controller and switch PCBs and solder on both sides. Columns 13 thru 16 go to ground on the switch matrix PCB, so no wires there if using xwhatsit controller (it might confuse the controller) but wires there should be OK for DPH controller (designed to auto-skip grounded columns).

Basically: some work is needed to get them put together properly. The location of some holes is not ideal. You can use the original XT backplate if you are prepared to drill new holes in it. I will be fully documenting my assembly efforts in a similar style to the bolt mod guide I did earlier.

methinks you should wait one more week, or else send a mass pm to the 9 remaining people with the PCB.
At these tiny production runs, every additional order can bring down the price quite a bit.

I have started contacting people who have kits and will extend the deadline if need be.

Edit: I have contacted everyone I know to have a prototype kit.

OP updated with an idea of the sort of work you will have to  do to make a prototype XTant kit into a working XTant.

While I don't have the disposable income for one of these right now, if anyone wants one but doesn't want to do the work for any reason, I will offer build services along with floss mod.

News: updated CAD files sent to shop. I have also contacted them about my final order and what type of payment they take.
Now for some of us, how would we go about sourcing a PCB?
The gerber files are available. You can download them and send them to a PCB fabrication shop of your choice. Since one-off PCBs are so expensive, you could do a small run like WCass did with the initial prototype.

I recommend that you wait on a second prototype PCB run until we get some more of the first run finished. I think there was some discussion about moving the mounting holes to a better location.

Also, you can try contacting WCass to see if he has any more PCBs left.

Edit: I got a final quote from the shop at $75/each for the XTant plates.

The awesomeness has been completed by wcass:  https://github.com/wcass-/XTant/blob/master/XTant/XTant%20pad.pdf

Although I can't seem to get it to print right.  Maybe contact wcass for the pdf file as an attachment rather than the link.

I will download that and see about getting it printed somewhere on something heavy enough to actually use as a template multiple times.

Would anyone be willing to buy mats for this, say $15 shipped?

Not sure.  What we need is a keyset like below, except a Caps Lock key in the Caps Lock spot, and probably all blanks for the left hand F-key cluster.

I was debating on getting in touch with them anyway to see about doing a mod set group buy with symbols similar to 7bits round 4 stuff.  But for this I think more traditional legends would be best.  I will do some drawing on ideas in the next few days.

Which exact symbols are you referring to?  I'm quite sure that Unicomp will only do symbols and labels that have previously appeared on IBM and Unicomp keyboards.

Email has been sent to Unicomp.  If they are willing to do it, would standard or these symbols legends be prefered.  Either way, I was going to post an IC for these legends for a standard group buy with possible kits for other popular boards such as the AT, unsaver, SSK, etc.

Oops.  Potentially dumb question, but would it be possible to just kind of use the plate flipped or something?  Or will that not work with the PCB?  I'm having difficulty visualizing in my head.

it would need a new pcb (think of it this way: arrowkeys on the left 10 function keys on the right.

I'll see if i can get them flattened and bent locally, but it might have to wait a bit for me to raise the funds.

it would be MUCH cheaper to just print new pcbs but the awkward position of some keys (right shift) and reverse staggar make it unappealing i think.

I've contacted all the original members from the group buy here, but just wanted to reiterate that I'm reviving this group buy and finishing it out to its end. I'll be contacting the plate manufacturer and getting price quotes.  Also, I will be doing a small run of PCBs for myself and a couple others that need them.

Please ask questions if you have them and let know if you need more details.

Placed the PCB order with the same PCB fabricator that wcass used.  They were surprisingly affordable, and the order process was smooth and easy.

Currently getting a price quote on the barrel/top plates.  I will PM all interested parties when I have that available.

PCBs currently are scheduled to be on my doorstep on Monday.  I placed the order on Sunday and they are being shipped from China, so I call that a pretty good turn around.  It helps that the main DHL international shipping hub is two hours away at the Cincinnati Airport.

The metal plate fabricator has confirmed the order and has said that the plates should be ready in 2-3 weeks. When everything arrives to me, I'll send out PMs asking for shipping addresses.

Now that I have those items out of the way, I will contact Unicomp about a possible group buy for keycaps.  Perhaps they could cut us a slight deal rather than having to pay full price for each individual keycap.  The layout has some flexibility, so keys that could fit alternative layouts, like ISO, could be included.  I'll think about it.

For anyone that ordered a PCB, those are in.  They look good.  Wcass changed the location of one of the holes for connecting it to the plate, move it more towards the vertical center.  I recommend cleaning off the dust and smudges before installing, but the quality looks great.

The turnaround from the fabricator was phenomenal as well, with the order placed on Sunday and delivered two Mondays later, so a little over a week from placing to the order to delivery to my door.  They are based in China near Hong Kong, so that's a pretty damn good turnaround in my book.

Plates are in.  I plan to have them shipped by the end of the week.  Also, oddly enough, the PCB fab sent me an extra fab, and I just noticed.

I matched up the plates with the stock XT backplate and wcass's PCB, threw some XT barrels in there, tested the space bar with the washer stabilizers.  Everything seems to work well.  I will not test an assembled XTant before I send out these parts, so we will all do a sort of group test.  Also, the plates are a little rough, so if you want the plates to look nice and pretty, you will need to finish them yourself.

Thanks to wcass for the design and experimentation, dorkvader for getting this started, IBM for making the original XT keyboard, the PCB fab (PCBWay), the metal fab (Weld Engineering and Fabrication), xwhatsit for his Model F controller, orihalcon for making more of xwhatsit's controller, DHL, UPS, Ebay, Unicomp, and everyone that has been involved with the marvels of air travel and the internal combustion engine (although I'm hoping for widespread adoption of electric motors sooner rather than later).  Thanks everyone for the patience.  Sorry if I forgot anyone.  We're all in this together.

Now here is a low-quality photo dump.  Enjoy.

Turns out renting a box truck for a day is cheaper than owning a pickup truck, and allows carrying even more keyboards! Why, just the gas I end up saving in a month or two covers the rental.

For all those that bought an XTant PCB from me:  I finally have a working black ink cartridge and I will be sending out some labels that you can attach to the backplate to show that the XTant has been refurbished with a new PCB and barrel plate, courtesy of the design genius of wcass.  Hoping to send these out before Christmas.
