Title: It's a movie thread!
Post by: noisyturtle on Tue, 03 March 2015, 00:26:42
Do we have a general movie thread? I don't recall seeing one just about any films you've watched recently. So here we go

Good idea, I love talking movies! Speaking of which, whatever happened to the movie streaming thing we used to do around here? I never managed to catch one but it was such a good idea.

This past week I watched Wayne's World, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, Lucy, and Pacific Rim.

So where do you fall between Bill and Ted vs Wayne's World?

Well Bogus Journey is better than Excellent Adventure. But I think Wayne's World is better unless you are really stoned in which case Bill and Ted are way funnier.

Edit: I suppose any state of inebriation would make Bill and Ted funnier

I think it is currently postponed while someone was moving houses. Hopefully it is back soon :)

I watched Nightcrawler last night. It's really good. What's struck me about the movie is the main character's complete lack of empathy should just cause the viewer to dislike him, and yet you still find yourself rooting for him. The movie was unique, at least to anything I'd seen before, and had a tendency to keep me feeling anxious or uncomfortable throughout the entire thing. And not in a bad way, in a pleasurably unnerving and entertaining way.

Fantastic movie, probably one of my favourites out or 2014. Couldn't believe how much it drew me in, I was on the edge of my seat by the end of it.

I thought the Imitation game was well done..

But.. tbh.. it's probably too boring for the non-geeks..

This week I've watched:

Chappie
The Loft
Kidnapping of Mr Heineken

All of them pretty average. The Loft was probably the better out of the 3. Chappie was not a new concept. Kidnapping of Mr Heineken seemed a bit below Sir Anthony Hopkins's ability/prowess

That and The Theory of Everything were both pretty good IMO.

Watched Star Trek I & II and Insidious. Enjoyed the Trek movies way more than I expected, Spock is a boss. Insidious was good as well, some genuinely scary scenes.

Alright, so I've been watching the Friday The 13th... err.. decaology? Whatever, there's 10 of 'em. So far I've watched the first 8 so here's a 2-3 sentence review on each one:

Friday the 13th: The first Friday movie is pretty unremarkable today. Not a lot to say about it other than it created a metric **** ton of horror movie cliches that would be used for decades to come. Jason's not really in this movie, but I don't wanna spoil anything so you'll just have to go watch it yourself. It's not bad as far as slasher flicks go, and really it was the first of it's kind so I look at this as a standalone movie off to the side of the main franchise.

Friday the 13th Part 2: This is the film that really sets the groundwork for the franchise because you learn about Jason's origin story, and it's the first time you actually see him hulking around slaughtering teenagers. It feels a lot like the first film, and all the kills are great spectacles. Later in the film you get some more insight into why Jason is the way he is and honestly I feel like this is the true first film to the franchise, with the first film sort of feeling like a prequel or spin off.

Friday the 13th Part III: This one was shot in 3D, but all the effects are lost since it came out in the 80s so you are left with a bunch of superfulous and out of place scenes where people are sticking **** slowly in the camera. That doesn't mean this one is a bad movie, in fact it's at least in the top 5 Friday movies IMO. None of the characters are particurally likeable so it's fun to see them all get killed. This movie takes a more comedic approach and is remarkable because this is the first film where Jason dons his iconic hockey mask.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter: This has got to be the strongest movie in the series, if you're only going to watch one Friday movie it should be this one and there's a nice recap of the first three at the beginning. This one actually has some likeable and relatable characters in Tommy, a kid obsessed with movie effects and Jim, an aprehansive teen. The story bounces between Tommy and his family who live on Crystal Lake, and Jim's group of roudy friends out for a fun weekend in the woods. The kills in this one are pretty good even if they are heavily edited, and the characters actually being decent actors working off a solid script is a welcome addition to the franchise. Plus the final showdown is one of the most memorable in the entire series.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning: Ohhh this one sucks, I don't even feel like writing about it. All the characters are horrible and I hate them, and the ending is a total cop out.

Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives: In this one we see the return of Tommy (as yet another actor) as he unwittingly resurrects Jason like an idiot. This one mixes in a bit more comedy/dark humor in and feels almost more like an action movie than a slasher flick. This is the first movie where Jason is a full-on otherworldly creature with super strength and ****, because he's punching people's hearts out and walking away from car wrecks, but ultimately this one's pretty forgettable and just whatever.

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood: This one's a bit different and centers around a girl with psychic powers revisiting the cabin she killed he father as a child many years later. This one takes a while to get up and murdering, but the main characters are solid and the special effects in this one are top notch for a Jason film. I think this one has the coolest looking Jason, and the final 20 minutes are ****ing metal as the psychic girl battles Jason to the death. Like the director said, "It's like Carrie vs The Terminator."

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan: IMO this is by far the worst film in the franchise. First off it's called Jason Takes Manhattan and yet it takes him over an hour to ****ing get there, and even then the potential for crowd interactions are squandered. None of the characters are relateable, and all the kills are way overcensored by the MPAA. Also apparently Jason has learned to teleport in this movie.

I'll do Jason Goes To Hell, and Jason X after I watch them  :blank:

Good idea, I love talking movies! Speaking of which, whatever happened to the movie streaming thing we used to do around here? I never managed to catch one but it was such a good idea.

It will be coming back! I had issues logging in to my account and then got really busy and let it slide. I'll work with YoungMichael to get it back up and running soonTM though.  :thumb:

Watched The Babadook on Netflix last night. If you are a horror fan that's tired of jumpsacres and gore, this film will put some legit fear into you. The first 3/4 of this movie are just so well done and nonderivative, which is a difficult thing to do in the horror genre apparently. Would recommend, if you don't mind missing a night or two of sleep ;)
