Title: Cherry G80-11900
Post by: SCTony on Sat, 29 August 2009, 08:14:45
Used - more than 10 available - $25 B.I.N.

Cherry says they should have brown switches:

The G80-11900 series should use the linear MX1AG1NW which is a brown  stem.

Mmmh, the Cherry rep himself says "linear", and original Cherry boards almost never have browns (apart from the super rare G80-5000).  On the other hand MX1AG indicates brown according to the wiki.  I doubt these really have browns, black is more likely.

IIRC, the "P" in the model number (G80-11900LPMUS) indicates the usage of Black cherry switches.

Yep I've never seen a stock G80-11900 with switches differents from the blacks (*).
If there is one, it would surely have some fancy model number, while in this case it's 11900 LPMUS-2 which indicates linear/black Cherry switches.

(*) except the one in my sig, but that has been modded from blacks to browns

Same maker, different branding.
They are so similar my mind blanked out the difference. (Apart from one having a trackball and the other a trackpad.) Compaq has kept the Cherry style model number.
My 11900 is "LP" as well, but has black Cherries.

Nice website.  Certainly beats Unicomps.

hahaha thanks ripster.
I saw my friend do it and then I realized I have a lot of junk in my closet and drawers so I might as well just get rid of it. Oh btw, this site does not charge any fees. All you have to do is worry about the 4% paypal and that's it (;

I received this board today and it has black switches - you guys were right.
I like the feel and sound of these switches. I swapped most non-alpha keys to white from an MY-7000 board(a horrible board for typing). The layout is a little different but I think I can adjust to that.   I can't wait to get a Cherry blue board. :yo:

Hmmm, I might have to pick up one of these 'boards at that price...

Do. They're absolutely stunning boards. Blacks actually feel decent there, as opposed to the G80-3000s with blacks. I don't know why, but I kind of like blacks in the 11900, whereas I can't stand them in the 3000.
Maybe it's due to the much better case construction of the 11900 series.

Haha, that's funny I was going to ask if it's a good representation of the switches, but you've already answered that question!  Now I'm definitely going to pick one up!

excuse my ignorance, but are these similar in quality to other/modern/'premium' cherry-black based boards, such as the filco?

Depends on how you see it. I don't own a Filco, so I can't comment on quality. Cherrys switches aren't plate-mounted, so feel should be different.
If you however look at the price of Filcos vs. the G80-11900 (retail price, that is), you'll find the G80-11900 to be quite expensive, even moreso than the Filco. That's mostly for the touchpad, however. The touchpadless variant, the G80-1800, is far cheaper.

What I really like about Cherry keyboards: The keycaps. They're made from high-quality engineering plastics and not that generic ABS crap, so they feel sturdy and nice. The cases suck big time most of the time, but the keycaps are really nice.

Take a look at some German shops (http://geizhals.at/deutschland/?cat=kb&asuch=cherry g80).

You should find most G80 boards there.

I can help if you say what you're looking for. Cherry has dozens of different models, so I just thought you'd like an overview. I think Cherry boards are cheapest in Germany if you don't buy US ebay specials (like the ultra-cheap G80-11900, for example). So, what specifically are you looking for? If you tell me the model, I could try to find a German online shop shipping internationally.

Hey thanks a lot. I don't know exactly what I am looking for, I was considering Unicomp and Filco. Then I decided I would probably get a Filco 10-keyless with Cherry Blues. Then I thought maybe I should look into a Cherry with Cherry blues or get one Filco and one Cherry. It's hard for me to make up my mind because I have never seen any Filcos or Cherrys or Unicomps in real life. I am familiar with the old IBM clickies but that's about it.

I'll go to the Cherry site and try to figure out which one(s) are what I am looking for.

My experience so far: Unicomp's build quality leaves something to be desired. Key feel is great, but the keys themselves show flashing and the case is slightly creaky. Still, they're great keyboards and I'd always buy my Endurapro again if I had to make the decision.
Filco--no idea so far. I'll get a Zero board with supposedly crappy switches in the next few days, so we'll see. They are quite expensive, though.
Cherry's keyboards are really nice. They're as inexpensive as it can possibly get, which is nice on your wallet, but this comes at a price. The case is just awful, it tends to warp easily when warped and it's incredibly lightweight. However, it's cost-cutting at perfection, as you don't notice any of it when the keyboard is on your table. The keys themselves feel absolutely fantastic due to the high-quality plastic they use. Also, you can almost get two Cherry boards for the price of one Filco, so the obvious cost-cutting on the case is far more acceptable.

What layout do you use? ISO or ANSI layout? Depending on this, you'll either want the G80-3000LSC**-0/G80-3000LSC**-2 or the G80-3000LSCEU-0/G80-3000LSCEU-2 (light grey or black). I could look for suitable retailers later on if you tell me the model you'd like.

It was actually your comments that made me decide against Unicomp for now. The Cherrys I saw looked pretty expensive, even more than a Filco so I'm glad you can get them for cheap where you are. That will certainly help.

I don't know which layout I use, it's the standard 103/104 key I think, American English. I decided I can live without the keypad and I never use the Winbloze keys so if I get a Filco it will probably be the FKBN87MC/EB which is the 87 key with Cherry Blues.

I checked Cherry's site just now and they don't seem to have a full PDF catalog, maybe I missed it. From Gemini's site they have tons of Cherry models but the Cherry site itself doesn't show this stuff. I'll search for the model numbers you listed, thanks a lot.

Those g80-3000s look pretty good, actually. How much are they if you buy them locally? I'm thinking of beige with cherry blues.

Also do you happen to know if they have something in that format that also has a smart card reader/writer? How much more do they cost?

Just take a look at their website (http://www.cherry.de/english/products/cable_keyboards.htm) and search for "G80" occurrences. To compare local prices, use this website (http://translate.google.com/translate?prev=hp&hl=en&js=y&u=http%3A%2F%2Fgeizhals.at%2Fdeutschland%2F%3Ffs%3Dg80-3000%26in%3D&sl=de&tl=en&history_state0=) and enter the respective model names.
