Title: What's Your Preferred Keyboard Cable Length?
Post by: Karura on Tue, 03 March 2015, 23:17:46
Was just curious as to how long people prefer their cable lengths to me.

Please reply in the following format for clarity:

1) Length: 6ft
2) Reason: It's the stock cable length of keyboards

or

1) Length: 10ft
2) Reason: Mah computer is too far away.

Let's hear it  :thumb:

Nothing less than 6 feet.  Anything less and I have to start unplugging it just to take the side panel off due to how it is positioned and how I route my cables.

I have a hub and travel with my keyboards to events n **** a lot. I really need to invest in shorter cables, later. For keyboard I just have 6ft cuz that's the maximum length before tj charges me more money and I'm a cheap Chinaman. Kindly refer to demik and his signature if you're American.

Pretty much this.

I have a large desk with the keyboard in the middle, at the front, and the computer sits on the floor off to the side, toward the back.

Since I use ancient IBM iron with a Soarer's/Teensy, that run can be broken in half with one piece going from the Teensy to the USB port, and with the Teensy sitting on the desk the keyboard cable itself can be short.

That said, whenever I build a Soarer's/Teensy I use pull-up resistors as a matter of course, and 10 foot USB cable "just in case"

Preferably wireless but that doesn't happen much.

Depends.

My one I have at work is only 2ft long because my desk and thin client (shudder) are close together.

But my preferred cable length at home is somewhere around 6ft

I like my peripheral cables as long as possible. It gives me more options for desk layout. You can always wire tie the excess.

I use a 10 foot cable in my XT with soarer, no problems and I don't have a pull up resistor

6ft, but with a little bit of coil on the end. Partially an aesthetic thing, it's also nice to have a little extra stretch to it

6 feet on my desktop
mainly because it's the default length.

3 feet or less on my laptop.
If I'm using my laptop, my board is usually never more than a foot and a half away from the computer.

10'

6' is to short usually and it is no issue coiling up a little extra under the desk.

Length:  8" [to my usb hub]
Reason: I don't game so I just connect all my peripherals to a USB hub so I only have a single cable running to the computer.  my sum total length of cables is reduced this way.

6ft because then I incorporate it into my cable management system, and also because it's the default length! :P

Coiled, so any length. My work computer is only half a metre (2 feet in weird units) away, but my home one is more like three (9 feet).

Width is also very important

I just made a custom paracord sleeved usb cable, it was such a bust

6ft because my computer is pretty far from my desk's keyboard tray.

I like this idea. Perhaps it would be best to have two cables, one 10ft for longer reaching (such as using it in the living room + TV rig), and a short one 3ft for laptop/tablet usage!
