Title: Switching from Reds to Blues, what can I expect?
Post by: Bsclly on Wed, 11 March 2015, 11:38:26
What's the difference besides the clicking noise? Is there a different bottoming out weight? Or anything else I should know of?

There is a small tactile bump at actuation.

But what can you expect? LOTS of annoying high-pitched clicking.

You can expect the desire to never stop typing and you will find yourself pleasantly addicted to the sound and feeling of your keyboard.

Lot of awesomeness in the typing experience, sadly mx blue aren't really usable in a social environment.

My workstation where the keyboard would be is soundproofed, so social environments and my keyboard won't mix haha

The transition is fun, but after a while it may get annoying.  YMMV.

The springs are the same (?) but there is just a sudden click at the actuation point.  You haven't had a chance to try them at any electronics store?

No electronics stores within 100 miles of me, sad I know. I've tried them a little bit on a friends board, but not enough to get a good feel. The only keyboard that I think I could trade for my Corsair K70 that fits most of my standards (Backlighting) Would be a Razer Blackwidow. If anyone knows of a cheap TKL keyboard with backlighting that has MX Blues that I could possibly trade for my Corsair K70 that'd be awesome. I just honestly don't like reds that much. I mash the buttons too hard most of the time lol.

ONLY the OLDER blackwidows have cherry MX Blues.  I think the 2013 version does.  The NEWER ones have Kailth switches (however you spell them) which are cherry ripoffs.
The quality is obviously lower since they're Chinese instead of German made.  However they ARE a gaming switch, and have a higher actuation point than cherries.  You could call them similar to the Logitech Romer-G in a way, however the Romer G's are a VERY nice switch with excellent backlighting, and abysmal keycaps (logo on WASD when some gamers don't use WASD, and the space between the keys is too close (the keycaps are more square than rectangular vertically, causing less clearance distance, which can result in accidental keypresses in some games (especially mobas) and can cause typos if you aren't used to them.

You'll notice the rest point is quite much higher compare to MX Red.

Though it won't be too noticeable unless you try gaming with it.  :P

I'm pretty sure they meant reset point. MX Blue is kind of unique in that the actuation point (pressing down) occurs further down than the release point on the way up.

This can be kind of odd if you don't release the key enough between double-taps. Personally, I don't think it's a big deal and you get used to it but every now and then I'll miss a double-letter.

The nice thing about MX Blue is that it isn't really any heavier than Red, only a small extra amount to overcome the bump.

Of course, the best solution is to have one of each.

What to expect?  If you've got headphones and no friends, pure bliss.  That's why I like blues.  (I say no friends because they're loud)  keystrokes just feel smoother than the other switches, and the click and tactile bump is quite satisfying.  I had a qfr with blues for the longest time that I used for gaming though, and I always found myself miskeying.  If you plan on primarily gaming, and you're a bit heavier handed, I'd go with greens.  If it's for typing though, blues are awesome imo.

I should mention also, I got a blackwidow recently, and while the click isn't consistent from switch to switch, and I don't like the angle the housing puts the keyboard at, it feels like a nice middle groundg between blues and greens.  Not too heavy, but not too light, and with a bit deeper tone in terms of the typing sound, which I know is important to some people.  I'm planning on recycling them soon and using them in a custom tenkeyless if I find the time.

If noise is an issue and you're are heavy handed, I would try whites, either with or without the o rings.  Its still a tactile click, but it's a softer click, and though they're rated at 100cn by that one wiki out there on the interwebs, they feel closer to greens at 80cn in regards to actuation force.  Just comes down to experimenting really.

You can expect hysteresis leading to inconsistent aural and tactile feedback, and a high pitched plasticy click when it does work.

Beautiful sound at first, then a lot of complaining from people around you while you are typing, then start hearing loss. :D :D

BTW, I suggest PBT keycaps and o-ring with blue switch.

...A much worse switch. Get a Topre if you're moving from reds and want tactile :D

soundproofing is really really bad, clicky switches have a lot of variances that might annoy you if the clicks are the only thing you hear, especially if plate pings are added to the mix

if the setup is perfect tho, the blues are extremely enjoyable, I have a leopold numpad with blues that I use just for the clicks, I haven't even really tested the numpad yet, never connected the usb cable

LOTS of annoying high-pitched clicking.

^ This.

Oddly enough, Cherry MX greens, which are basically a heavier version of the blues, are much less irritating.

I find the opposite to be true, blue's don't have a spring ping, yet greens have, blues have a more mellow click, some of the greens are brain piercing
Although I should get stronger switches, for this reason I limited myself to red/blue's

I don't think it really matters which of the two is slightly more annoying. Personally I don't like the sound of ANY Cherry MX switch xD .
