Rewrote the OP
It can take anywhere between 1-3 years of natural-non-steroid-boosted workouts to achieve an attractive shapeliness.
But it pretty much only takes around 6 months to 1 year to go Full-Fat all over again.
Storing fat used to be a significantly more important task for the body, than building muscle.. (that's why we're so good at it)
So due to our now dichotomous-View of thin(muscle) vs thick(fat), we evaluate at 1:1, but in truth they're not direct opposites to be compared..
This leads to unreasonable expectations and unreasonable disappointment.

I have been in great shape, and am now pretty fat and can say with certainty that I am far happier being fat then thin and muscular.
BTW it took me about 2 years to get into competition-type shape, and about 3 years for it to go away completely.
People rave about how being healthy feels great, and it does, but nothing beats eating a carton of Ben and Jerry's and a large pizza whenever you want. And who the hell wants to live past 80 anyway?

Well.. There are many Avenues of Happiness..
So you're attractively skinny.. You eat less, but you may get more sexy time with the females.
So you're fat.. You don't get the sexy-time, but you get to EAT ICE-CREAM..
It is ultimately easier to Eat m0re ice-cream, then it is to Consistently Score with females..
This would explain why most fat people would be happier more frequently. Because Ice-cream as a source of Happiness, is way way cheaper, and less stochastic than procreational-recreation.

Plus sex is a lot of work, sweaty, dirty, wets up the blanket and sheets. And you have to talk before to get there, and are expected to talk after.
Then again, Ive never been much for companionship. Some people seem like they cannot function without a significant other, no matter how good or bad that other person is for them just so long as they have the illusion of being loved.

I don't suppose a middle ground where you are active and can eat a carton of ben and jerrys and a pie of pizza once every one or two weeks is out of the question?
It took me about 5 months to go from 180lbs and about 22-23% body fat to 155lbs and about 10% body fat. I've maintained it with working out and good eating, and I enjoy the working out. I still have a nice going out dinner with friends every weekend and it's not that big a deal.

Oh god no, I didn't mean to imply that! I eat out/junk food on occasion (or any day I have a surplus of calories), but when it comes to junk food at home I'm a bit of a mess. So, I just don't buy it.

Oh god no, I didn't mean to imply that! I eat out/junk food on occasion (or any day I have a surplus of calories), but when it comes to junk food at home I'm a bit of a mess. So, I just don't buy it.
Haha, no I didn't mean to call you out. It's just that people always look at it as "eat crappy all the time and be fat" or "eat healthy but don't live life at all to be healthy" when the middle ground is usually fine. I mean, I personally want to get a 6-pack for this summer and I'm sacrificing a bit to get it, but I know I can stay with 12-13% body fat and eat a big mac meal like 2-3 times a week without worrying.
I will of course admit I am a late 20 year old who has a good job and can afford to do what I do. I would never judge anyone for having more restrictions than me.

people are rather quick to come to conclusions and make assumptions about other people; in this case, their daily diet.
if you got to know how your 'role models' worked (athletes in this case), you'd realize they're not on strict diets very often at all. why? because the negative effects of stress chemicals caused by being unhappy about food deprivation far FAR outweighs the 'superiority' of a technically perfect diet (no such thing btw).
