Title: wierd custom layout. :/
Post by: BurgerBum on Sun, 15 March 2015, 22:30:33
so, i type incorectly, and am not going to change that, the right side of my spacebar is pretty much worn down and thin.  :p
i hit it with my right index finger, right on the line between N and M on a standard qwerty keyboard.
so, i made myself a custom layout, keeping as few keys as possible, and being as space-concious as i could :p

my main question, would be if there are any PCBs for this kind of layout, a place where i can get a custom PCB or find one that would work fine with some work put into it, or whatever. :D :)

http://goo.gl/1F7YZF
thats the link. if its broken yell at me or something.

let me know what you think! all feedback is appreciated. :D  ;)   ^-^

side note:
dont worry about wierd ergonomic issues with WASD and spacebar, i plan on making this keyboard when i have a separate gamepad, i dont like gaming on keyboards anyway. >.>

Check this out, they make a complete for around 150... You could program it to what you want!

It sounds like you and I have a very similar typing style. :)

Looks like you want a JD40 with an alternate bottom row. With a 3.5-unit spacebar. Keep an eye on my twitter feed for possible updates to the JD40. But don't expect 3.5u spacebar support to be added any time soon. I am liking the layout options I included on the JD45, and I usually like to leave support for larger, standard sized spacebar that you actually have hope of purchasing some day. :D

For the record, the pink text is very hard to read for those of us using the white background.

I do a similar thing with the spacebar while typing. Good luck finding something.

Where are you going to source a 3.5 unit long keycap? Or are you making it yourself out of wood or something?

i was previously thinking about just ABS or whatever plastic and having a friend print it. (3d printers and all) then i realized i dont have any friends with 3d printers......... xD

now that you mention it making a FULL keycap set out of wood would be really rad...

Does Enter deserve to be a home row key? I think one of these offers you a few more options and allows more character layouts with less characters needing to be on a Fn layer: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=62641.0

I'm also developing a portable programmable board with slightly similar layout, but it's going to be a while before any PCB's / complete boards are available: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=66836.0

I have left areas on the bottom row empty which I consider to be "dead" space, not easily rechable by either thumbs or pinkies.

deal is, those kinda keyboards dont fit my typing style. :/

do i need to get a a PCB in order for me to make a keyboard?
im actually at the point with my only working keyboard left that the main key (spacebar) is dying out and im needing to reach foreward and onto my laptop to type this. (super janky setup. :/ gonna fix it soon)

Check jd's sticky with links for threads about making your own board, but no you don't need a pcb. You can hand wire a matrix with just a plate to hold the switches.

I don't think you need a pcb.  You could use plate mounted switches and wire a matrix up to a teensy like you have to with Apple m0110 keyboards.  But I'm no expert on that and couldn't be of any help really.  That just sounds like a cheaper/quicker alternative if it is feasible.

Edit beat by neverused.  I type to slow in my phone :)

The best way I can think of at the moment is to design your layout in the keyboard layout editor: http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/

Then copy and paste the raw output to swill's plate building tool: http://builder.swillkb.com/

And send the file to Big Blue Saw for them to make it for you: https://www.bigbluesaw.com/

Then all you need to do is wire up the switches and diodes into a matrix and solder that to a Teensy 2.0 and flash it with a good firmware, like TMK. Jd's links post should help you to get these steps done.
