Title: Best method of applying grease to Costar stabilizers
Post by: saturnotaku on Mon, 16 March 2015, 06:14:29
Need to grease the stabilizers on my CODE keyboard. I'm planning to head to the local Home Depot to pick up some white lithium. What is the best way to apply it? Dab on a toothpick? Ultra fine paintbrush? Q-tip?

I just need to know in case I need to buy something else while I'm out later.

Thanking you in advance.

a Q-tip or a 0.6mm Syringe would be great

Personally I've tried white lithium greasy first, it's too watery and dries up with white gunk (white lithium).

Didn't find it work too well, then I bought this:  http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,misc&pid=mechlube

This works a lot better because it's a lot thicker and doesn't dry up.

So if you can find something similar to this it's best.  But to answer your question I used Q-tip back then.  :P

I actually found a local store that carries Super Lube silicone grease and will use that instead.

Buy a lube pack from WASD keyboards

Attach the key the easiest way you can

Before putting the key onto the switch, insert some lube into the holes right from the lube pack

Also lube the front and back of the costar inserts, as they touch the sliders and produce sounds when not lubed

Alternatively, lube where the metal meets the slider, the metal holder part, beforehand

Alternatively, lube the middle part of the metal, as sometimes that metal part hits the key, the bent part, beforehand

I'm aware of what needs to be done; I was just asking about the right tool to use to apply the lube. Also, for what WASD charges with shipping and time in transit, I can get a much larger tube of the same stuff from my local hardware store.

Well the viscosity is also pretty important, the WASD one has a very high viscosity, I've tried low viscosity lubes before, they work, yet they wear out too quickly and get the plate wet, so I find the WASD one to be near-optimal, it also lasts pretty long, after many keyboards/lubings, I'm still using the first tube

I always use a small flat screwdriver to apply the lube, if using the lube pack is outside the question, the very small watch repair screwdrivers work best, they also work good for low viscosity lubes, I just pour the low viscosity lubes somewhere and apply it pint by pint with the screwdriver

This (http://www.harborfreight.com/85-gram-super-lube-grease-cartridge-93744.html) is the exact same stuff, just in a larger size. With a coupon, I can get it for less than $6 out the door, which is about what it would cost for that small packet from WASD since they have a $3 minimum order and you have to pay shipping.
